Age of Empires 3 Will Always be the BEST

- It is my firm opinion that Age of Empires 3 is the best game in the Age of Empires series. In this video I make the argument as to why I believe this to be true, while also recognizing why it also wont ever be considered the "greatest."

Because I know that there will be a lot of people who will want to argue with me in the comments I just want to reiterate what I say in the video at 2:33.
AOE2 = Greatest (Large impact on RTS genre, incredible legacy, timeless gameplay formula/systems, massive fanbase)
AOE3 = Best (Most unique systems, most immersion, most player choice/versatility)
so true
Agree, AoE2 is one of the most impactful games for the RTS genre and one of the most beloved (side by side with Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and the C&C series), but I will always have a special place in my heart for AoE3
I was just kidding with my comments, obviously its a matter of opnion what game you think its better. You can either be correct or wrong xd
could u pls tell how did u remove the zoom-out fog?
Thanks for another video!
A reminder. In AOE 2 you create an empire from the ground and in AOE 3 you expand a colony from the empire you created in AOE2. Mind blowing
That is a good way to look at it!
Unfortunately that is the reason aoe2 is more popular than aoe3
@@ishansrivastava4672How????????
Yup!
@@blaiseviola3318 In aoe2 there is a sense of huge scale. A vastly sprawling empire which u built using ur own hands. It is visually appealing as well as greatly tied with the gameplay. And visual appeal is important to sell. Many city building games existing serving this purpose only. While aoe3 cities look lame. A single mill can host like 10 farmers. One house can host 10 pop instead of 5. Each building produces in batches. Higher relative cost of buildings and hard limits on buildings. All this leaves less buildings to build or lessens the reason to build another. Also in aoe2, if u venture into a player's base, u can feel the depth of it (see gameplays) while in aoe3 cities finish as soon as they start.
Aoe3 unfortunately lacked in scaling which eventually led to overall poor experience than aoe2.
I played a lot of aoe3 and honestly never felt this. But when aoe4 released and was immersed in this scale, I understood why aoe3 failed to appeal despite having asymmetrical civ design which is the biggest thing missing from aoe2
I thought I was the only person who thought aoe 3 was the best
There’s dozens of us!
@jordanrudderham7981 great reference!!
AOE 2 was great but AOE 3 is the game i played more often because i love the renaissance and exploration era weaponry. The only thing i don't like about the game is the map is way too small
You are not the only one my friend. It's a great game.
its for true RTS ers... its like checkers vs chess. aoe 3 is the chess... FFA is the mastery!
Aoe3 is and was always love. I loved this game and will always love it.
The time and heartblood we have spend in this game is crazy, tho we will still continue to work on the legacy.
Greetings, the Wars of Liberty team
As someone who is close to immune to nostalgia when it comes to games, I never felt particularly attached to AoE2 despite playing it extensively back when it first came out over two decades ago. I simply don't like it when games have barely differentiated factions that all look and play very similarly. That's where AoE3 and 4 improved upon the formula and why I will always prefer them over the second part.
- an explorer (hero unit)👍
- Build trade posts 👍
- HomeCities 👍
- Forge alliances with natives 👍
- Hire outlaws and mercenaries 👍
- Collect treasures on maps (but sometimes they're useless) 😏
- Experience Points "XP" 😄
- MORE unique units than any other game of the franchise 😊👍
- Better 3D graphics and more realistic environment to play 💥
........ Did I forget to mention anything else ?
Rank up in Multiplayer system. Start from Conscript. Become general one day.
Every player builds a unique deck.
Play as Germans. Chop musket lines with 2 handed sword wielding Doppelgangers.
I remember opening up the CD case for AOE III and being so hyped when downloading the game. Then I played through all of the campaigns, and then played through all of them again! Playing skirmishes against AI with my brother will always be a wonderful memory of mine, and I really like how different 3 is from the other games in the series. The physics engine of the game always impressed me, and it was such a blast bringing my Bombard cannons in to wipe out any opposing forces! Ottomans FTW!
I remember going to gamestop and getting the War Chiefs expansion, getting home to install in, and then realizing that it was an expansion and that I needed to buy the base game still. Had to wait like a week before I was able to find it 😂
@mxlhl I totally get that! I actually had a box that included the War Chiefs expansion, but my disc was bugged because I couldnt complete its campaign! After a certain mission, the screen would stay black!
age of empires 3 just feels the most lifelike to me. its hard to explain to people that only play age of empires 2. But the music the home city shipments and parts of the campaign unique story got me excited in ways that i never felt with aoe 2. Truly a great game that deserves all its expansions and remaster that is still being played today
AoE3 best game indeed!!
Best soundtrack of the series , that much is indisputable
1000%
I love to see that We are a loyal community in Age3.
Even when Age3 its been ignored by Worlds Edge, we are standing here, enjoying an very underrated game, that is one of best RTS in 30 years of strategy games, but we need to grow this family and show them (Worlds Edge) that Age3 its still alive
Didn't expect a japanese history channel to drop a video about my favorite AoE game!, i have played all AoE from the first game to 3 and my favorite thing about the AoE 3 is i really feel that times have changed like the warfare, industrialization and you're part of a greater system, this game is currently the best RTS game set in early modern period which is one of the most underrated period covered in games, movies, and other media!, and it's also introduced me to said period when i was a kid and now i might write a book about it.
I think other reasons why it isn't as popular as AoE 2 beside the change of systems or unit distinction is the AoE 3 system requirements when the game first launched is demanding and out of reach for RTS gamers worldwide therefore much less fanbase, but for AoE 2 is not a big deal and you can install it on any office computer. Other than that, i think it's because the AoE 3 campaign is fictional and more narrative driven unlike in AoE 2 where you feel like being part of historical military campaign fighting big battles although it's only a RTS game with max 200 people, though i still wish AoE 3 have historical campaign like Napoleonic Wars.
One of my favourite experiences with this game, has to be introducing my friends to this game, seeing them learning the basics to then come with stuff like: "Is this possible?" just to find out that it is!
and having matchups that constantly evolve with friends!
Like the British vs Mexico Matchup that I have with a friend, where anything could happen!
Sometimes I go for the Scottish Fast Fortess, and punish his greedy Central America Revolt, sometimes this friend goes for a Fast Industrial, and my longobws get melted by Tulacingo Cuirassiers, or Heavy cannons.
Other times I have to be on the defense against a super aggresive Baja California!
Just two civs fighting can come with soooo many different playstyles and events!
Which is fascinating compared to the more clean gameplay of 2 and 4, where you need to have a high level of micro and macro.
But in this game, if you have the right strategy, you can easily overcome those skill limitations and score some great wins!
Aoe2,3 and mythology - a perfect mix
AoE III D.E. = 🐐
I like the way they have a nation builder in AoE3 you can select your favorite nation and build up their perks for each age before the game starts, and it was nice when they let you do a little aesthetic choices for your little city like flags, peoples, and color schemes.
Looks like Ill be playing AoE3 this evening then!🤓
AoE3 is the best title of the series, and I'm tired of people claiming it's not.
the reason AOE 3 is not very popular is because the game released at the dawn of FPS game like call of duty. Also on the release day AOE 3 is a heavy game and i remember back then i must set my graphic in low because constant fps drop
What i like is that each common unit is different for any country. An italian musketeer will be different from a british one. Also more unique units.
THAT SAID it can be a very clotted game. The cards system is cool can be distracting for people who come from the previous games and theres always too much stuff on the map (treasures, natives and trade routes) that "dirts them".
Also the medieval setting lends itself better for a rock paper system since in aoe 3 almost everyone has a gun. It can get confusing.
Finally the campaigns are pathetic. So much history to use and barely scratched.
All in all AOE 2 wins for me but when i want to play something more refined and complex i go for AOE 3.
@@SIGNOR-G The game feel rich because the regional skin. I also like the card system where you can choose to focus on economy or military or mixed between two making multiplayer play is more fluid because anyone can became anything.
@@bristleback3614 if AOE 2 finally adopted regional skill it would be the definitive game. Unfortunately they are too afraid of their precious multyplayer and dont want to confuse players (or they are lazy)
@@SIGNOR-G well making a new skin for 45 different civilization would be pain in the butt even if get paid for it also it's not very good for a competitive multiplayer game unless the dev making an specific options menu to turn off the region skin
Walking into Half Price Books as a young child, i first always wanted to run over to the small section every story had for PC games... Back when we still got them on CD.
Age of Empires III i got that way, as well as the Asian factions DLC. Still have the OG cases; as well as for Age of Empires II, where I started.
Writing this makes me sound old xD
Anyway. I liked AoE2, but 3 was special. I had played a lot of the first game as well.
But with 3... The campaign & factions and world of it all... That Carribbean island map hehe... I spent hours scouring the booklet the cooy came with. I used to love collecting the little booklets of games that had all the mechanics, pictures of units, maps, etc in them... I'd take them with me so i could read them, then while on say a car ride, go into my own world around them / remembering a certain match I'd played of said game. I remember to this day, Stronghold Legends, still had my favorite booklet of any, but was tied with AoE3. They were my 2 main ones.
Getting that upgrade disc with the Asian dynasties is a memory still in my mind... So exciting. I actually have full memory of playing through some of the missions in it as all 3 of the added groups... Wow.
AoE3 just had so many little different things to it given the difference in setting. Like I saw other comments mention, stuff like the hero, interactable treasures / events, the care building-homecity, and much more... It was a magickal game for me and to this day still feels to be one made of geuine passion, not corporate slop.
One thing I did miss between the games was the death-decay system. In the earlier titles, bodies of both man and animal would stay, and eventually rot away to bones... That was a massive little detail for me as a kid. Going through old battlesites, losing my guys I cared for so much & seeing them turn to bone, etc...
Great game, esp for those who got to grab it from a store, download it via disc after finally getting home, and launching it up... The anticipation of that all was crazy! Esp when load times on the super slow PC were a thing... "1hour to play" a day yet gotta choose something that loaded quick...
Just seeing the cover arts / little bits of it spurns forth so many memories. 3 gave me a huge interest in conquistadors for sure- which for me, one who grew up with MASSIVE interests in history, was awesome. Along with ancient Japan, or India, or any others... Whew.
Cutting through the new world with the knights of Malta; first hounded by the Ottomans, then meeting upon the natives... So cool.
Shoutout Stronghold Legends & AoE3; both were huge, magickal worlds I delved far into as a wee lad... So long ago now...
Definitely the greatest in my eyes is AoE 3. I could never get back in AoE2 nowadays, despite spending god knows how many hours playing that with a childhood friend...
Oh boy, Im following you and your channel since youve under 100 subscribers. Seeing youve 200k supporters reminds me of the good old days :(
I remember that shortly after it was first published, my father bought Age of Empires 3 for me. It was the first computer game I owned, and every time the theme sounds I can't help it but remember those days. The version I had was exclusively in English (not my first language), and even though at the time I couldn't understand most of what was said, the game was approachable enough that a 6 years old like me could get the basics and enjoy it for literally hundreds of hours
Glad to hear you are enjoying AOE3 in very similar manner to mine. AOE2 used to be my favourite game of all time as a kid. But then I remember getting AOE3 as a christmas present back in 2005. I was instantly hooked to it's beauty, immersion and action. The time period really spoke to me and it still does. The game got even better with the Infinitive Edition and I still find myself going back to it from time to time. You summarized the game well in the video and I agree with everything you said. I'd also like to add how good the naval aspect is compared to the other AOE titles. And how important the idea of an explorer hunting treasures is for the early game. Also all civs are completely different from each other so the re-playability value is enormous. There really is no reason for us AOE3 fans to be ashamed of not preferring AOE2 or 4 :)
AOE 3 is a legend. I still have my old computer that I downloaded the game on back in 2010. And every year usually around the holiday season I fire that thing up and relive some simpler times for a few weeks of nostalgia
While I did start with AoE 1 then 2 (first games ever I played on PC) my most played games of the franchise are AoE3 and AoM. Those games were beyond magical and had amazing graphics for their time, also my computer kinda sucked but I had no trouble running them.
Nowadays I don't really play classical RTS anymore but these games had a strong effect on me for my interest in history. It is so cool that 20 years later this franchise is still supported, AoE players don't realize how lucky they are.
Fantastic video!
I've been playing AoE3 for a while now, and I cannot express how deep this game is, you have so many ways to express yourself towards your own playstyle with your favourite civ!
As long as you learn the basics, the game is a huge playground with tons of personality!
In this game each civilization feels truly different from the other, and I highly recommend checking some casted games just to see how amazing the strategies that some people think of are!
Great video! I definitely agree with the customisation options during matches as well, with the cards and age-up bonuses.
To give an example of one of my own decks, while the Russians are usually played as a human swarm faction, there are a bunch of cards that allow them to actually turn their cheap units into becoming very strong individually. It's a more defensive game (which makes me focus on building their unique blockhouses - with the Logistician for age II!), but in the end you'll run around with 100 buffed up Northern Musketeers, Counter Dragoons and a Tsar Cannon :-)
There are so many directions you can go with customisation it's insane and great, atleast in singleplayer. Multiplayer tends to be much more limited with its meta from what I've heard, and AoE2's appeal is in a very large part because of its multiplayer scene (although the majority of players then end up only playing singleplayer).
Never played an AOE game but if the Shogun says 3 is worth a peek then we must obey. If not we cannot live with the shame
Thank you for this video!
I dare say the game was ahead of its time.. the astonishing artillery physics, the stunning graphics, and of course the boldly experimental mechanics especially with the home city system, all in the year 2005! Sometimes I can't help but wonder whether the game would have found more success if it was released in more recent years. Nevertheless I'm glad the game still has support and a core fan base; hopefully this can continue long into the future!
Finally ! Someone who says what i have been thinking about aoe3 . Sadly this is the first video on youtube that appreciates aoe3 like this. It feels like games no longer innovate for a very long time (at least not in a good way) ,especially aoe4.
It's my favorite game.
Age of Empires 1's Japanese campaign is just game challenges based on the oldest epics
2 doesn't really go into Japanese history except for a fairly loose interpretation of the battle of Yamazaki
3, while light on other historical campaigns, really does a great job in the Warchiefs and Asian Dynasties expansions
I feel 3 is seriously underrated: I like the more streamlined economy (I don't have to chase after relics to make sure I can even survive, I don't have to worry about losing a sheep, I don't have to keep pouring my wood into dropoff buildings), I like the rewards system for building and fighting (so that you're not spending resources for nothing) and playing the same civ over and over (it's a great way to learn, I like the customization options ( I only wish I could have more cards in the deck) , I like the more unique civilizations (it just feels wrong with Inca crossbows and Indian pikemen with big crosses on them), I like the underrated time period that is so important to today (colonialism created today's world) and the global focus (although I wish they had more African and Asian material, but hopefully there will be more DLC)
Well said: 2 is the definitive, the biggest, the most content, 3 progresses and takes it further beyond.
I was actually disappointed 4 was a remake of 2 rather than 1.
Exactly about choice! There's so much customization- decks, natives, politicians, revolutions. Yeah, the Germans have tons of Uhlans but I don't have to use Uhlans. The British had great infantry but I can fight with cavalry. I can use Jannisaries or Horse archers, cannon or grenadiers. I could go with an Ashigaru based army, or a Samurai based one, and while they're not at all the same, they are both feasible strategies. It's not like where you just have one strategy- that's been my problem with a lot of games that make you really only play one way, and all the playthroughs are exactly the same since there's only one way to win. In AOE2 I'm playing against the Portuguese and I don't have onagers it gets harder for me. If I'm playing the Mongols and don't use horse archers I'm making a mistake.
Now the only thing I need is a new PC to play the DE
I know this sounds weird, but imo AoE 3 has to be treated as a sequel to AoM much like AoM was a sequel to AoE 2.
AoM took lessons from 2 and streamlined things such as the wall and tower upgrades being researched directly when clicking on the structure, rather than having to build a University. Same with Blacksmith upgrades that got streamlined into a general attack upgrade as well as Hack and Pierce Armor.
AoE 3 on the other hand took things like the Atlantean villagers and expanded that on all villager-type units. Home City cards are AoE 3's version of God Powers and while projectiles were originally dodgable in OG AoM despite being very hard to do so as only units with 5.0 speed could outrun projectiles, all projectiles in AoE 3 became homing.
Seeing these three games as sequels to each other also kinda spoiled AoE 4 for me as the amount of original features and gameplay in AoE 4 is, sound design excluded, rather minimal. :D
AoE3 has been the go to strategy game I come back to every now and then alongside Stronghold Crusader. I've been playing it with my brother ever since I'm a kid and it got me fascinated about the New World and the American separation from the British Empire.
I'm not exactly sure what it is about the game but the atmosphere is just something else in combination with the dynamic OST and the sound of everything in the game. It's part of my childhood and will always have a special place in my heart as one of the few games I still like to play many years later, so matter if it's the original or the defitive edition.
My mother played AoE II when she was pregnant with me and I played AoE III for most of my infancy and well into my teens and what stuck with me the most are the soundtrack and voice acting. I still play it sometimes, though I haven't tried the definitive edition yet
Have played AoE2 for like thousand hours do agree AoE2 would be improved by taking inspirations from AoE3.
AoE3 has so many variables it’s insane (revolutions, age upgrades and the cards).
Would like to see the revolution/age up aspect added to some new AoE2 civs.
Well, 2 already did by things like Flemish Revolution or Khmer Farmers not needing drop off sites
I, too, love this game, and it is by far my most played entry in the series, and has been my favorite since 2007. As someone who has sank thousands of hours in the Cossacks series, the 16th-19th century warfare has always intrigued me
I recognize it's not perfect. The Campaign stepping away from reliving actual history and instead focussing on a fictional story that touches on it was a bit disappointing. It has easily the most frustrating walls in all of the games and they help turning treaty games into a slog. The shipment system and the removal of resource drop-of points significantly speed up the tempo of the game compared to other entries. The armies are smaller thanks to the pop cap that is still 200 despite units now costing more population for balance, the standard HUD in DE is *horrendous*... to name a few negatives.
But the more I play AoE 3, the more I appreciate how different it is from 2 and 4. It actually has its own identity and cultivated a community of its own. It does not try to copy its predecessor, it tried to be its own thing, and they doubled down on it in the Definitive Edition, to my great delight.
The last year was not exactly bountiful when it came to content, and the delay of the next DLC combined with the shutdown of the old ESO servers are salt in the wound, but the additions we got so far have been amazing. One of my favorite free update was the unique skins given to the European Royal Guard and Church Units (like the French Voltigeur skirmisher, the Spanish Tercio pikeman, the Swedish Savolax Jaeger,...). The army diversity (natives, mercenaries, outlaws,...) is so much more colorful and vibrant than the, dare I say, 'boring' look of AoE 2, where many of the units look exactly the same for every nation (an Aztec Spearman is visually indistinguishable from a Japanese or Italian spearman). Civilizations in this game feel much more fleshed out, especially after some reworks (Russia and Ottomans come to mind). The Revolution mechanic adds even more diversity to the mix (the French, Finland and Maya Revolution are my personal favorites).
As much of a timeless gaming landmark Age of Empires 2 is, and despite how stunning and detailed Age of Empires 4 is, I simply can't go back to them (unless to play with friends), they cannot captivate me like Age of Empires 3 can.
AoE3 was the first in the series I played. Loved it. Also love IV. However, Galactic Battlegrounds I would prefer over either. Fond memories of that game.
Age of Empires 3 is so underrated. I played it a lot more than AoE2, and it sparked a great interest in the time period it's set in-the early modern period (1500-1800). Honestly, it's because of AoE3 that my field for the PhD history program I'm taking is set in the same time period as in the game.
technically the time period stretched up to mid 20th century because Dutch can revolt to Indonesia which gained independence in 1945
@@bristleback3614 well that makes sense but in that case, if the game is set until 1945, we should see WW1 and WW2 soldiers for britons or germans, and we dont have them
@@Churly25 well AOE 3 timeline is a bit messed up i mean you can play as Mexican and having Aztec as your team mate
Age 3 is what got me into Age. I loved StarCraft and my dad got a beefy new PC that came with many new games for free and one of them was original 2005 release of Age 3. It got me into early modern history and it got me into Age as a whole as I quickly went and got the CD releases of Age 1 and 2 as well. When definitive came out I did have some concerns and criticisms but overall I’ve felt it’s been a great update.
However I find myself playing Age 2 more because of one tragic truth: Campaigns! Back in original Age 3, it had the campaign content advantage over Age 2, but now Age 2 has TONS of campaigns and a much larger thriving custom campaign community. Age 3 is stuck with its piddly 8, less than half its civs represented now, and while it’s single mission scenarios are nice, it’s not enough. The fact half the campaigns are wacky pseudo history doesn’t help either - there’s so much that could be done with Age 3’s civs! I would love to see Age 3 live up to its full potential because I agree with you on all of its mechanical points. Decks and shipments are great diversifiers.
everyone says aoe3 sucks IT DOES NOT!!!
I've grew up with AoE2 and 3 and tbh I preferred 3 wayyy more than 2 cause of the update graphics for it's time and the new mechanics where your vills dont have to make their way to a drop off point as that always frustrates me as a kid. Also seeing people flying away with cannon balls is sick no one can say otherwise.
Your argument is valid. Especially since you mentioned Star War Galactic Battlegrounds
I agree. I was thinking some days ago, why Age of Empires 3 always seemed best and funnier than Age of Empires 2, since I was a kid?
Those were some bath thoughts haha but I have to write in stone. I have to think my exact reasons why, to then write them here in the comments. I'll be commenting tonight
I love AOE3, I played it for hours in my childhood. Coming from AOE 1 and AOE2 I welcomed the changes. Tho homebase shipments were a little hard to wrap my head around.
as a newcomer yes it takes some experience or education from online resources. But then allows for a lot of variety and far out strategy.
Finally somone has said it!!
The richest AOE game Ever !!
RIGHT ON! Ensemble studios was a team of artist and professionals of which doing what they pleased was their business... with their success of aoe2 they were able to really develop what an RTS could be and came up with their masterpiece in art and strategic design. It had a homogenized millitary and economic systems that thrived with civ uniqueness and allowed for asymmetric counter balancing I have not really ever seen done in other games. Yes AOE 3 is the BEST. I grew up on age of empires 1 and 2, and in college aoe 3 came out. I had to wait until 2008 to try it, but it was amazing and so much better in every aspect. Although I would have preferred it to be in the castle setting, the art and design has given me thousands of hours of fun online gaming. All the other games are kind of boring after a while.... then I found age 3 Free for All FFA.... the best way to ever play RTS. Seriously a small niche that explores true strategy and skill, and wisdom in deck for map/ civs.
I started with AoE 2 but ended up falling in love with 3.
My best moment was when I realized that I was able to insta-create rekruts and made entire legions of them and won. And to finish it off, Gall even talked about the great spirit helping me😇
Talked about a coincidence. I just finished the AoE3 campaigns last week.
For context, I am just a filthy casual singleplaying gamer so I won't comment on the competitive side. I tried to get into AoE2 DE but beside the ridiculous amount of campaigns and gorgeous isometric buildings I found it kinda hard to get into, all the units looking similar, all the civs playing similar. And that is how I felt in love with the AoE4. Just the simple facts like the Mongols has a fully removable base, Every units, down to the basic villager, have a different skin make the game much more immersive.
And that is where AoE3 came in. I did it right after playing AoE4 so the graphic took awhile to grow on me. But I knew I would love this game the moment I saw a cannonbal wrecking multiple poor guys before it dropped and rolled around on the field. The unit pathing is hella clunky though.
That being said, all the thing I love in AoE4 already were there in AoE3. The minor factions and the trash talking from faction leader are a nice touch, inspired by the Civ series I think. I was surprised to see not just Native American but also European Royal Houses as a trading post. I could hire Bourbon troosp to beat the French! The home city always makes me feel like a part of sth bigger, like a cog of the imperial colonizing machine, another game to emulate that feeling is Into the Storm, but it didn't feel quite the same.
I guess the time period in history a person is interested in also determines what game they choose or like.
what the hell ? this is one of my childhood games , i've played and replayed every AoE with mythology, but never knew of the japanese extension in AoE3, thanks
Japan is a playable civ included in the The Asian Dynasties pack (with China and India) for the now delisted vanilla AoE 3 and the still alive AoE 3 Definitive Edition
@@royasturias1784 thx king
Age of Empires 2 gets all the love but I've always thought 3 was the standout.
I don't want to go so far as saying it's the best because I just don't feel I have a sufficient understanding of what that would mean or have spent enough time analysing all AoE games. That being said, it certainly is my favourite game in the franchise.
Part of it is probably that it's the time period I like most. Part of it is probably that it's the one I played the most. But I just also really vibe with the mechanics, especially the player choice you mentioned. Being able to build my own deck and come up with strategies for it, select different governors when I age up, etc. is really something I like. I also find that fortresses are more interesting buildings than castles because they are so limited and factories add a whole new dimension to the late game.
I really enjoy it.
i always loved aoe3 as a kid for it's customizablity of civs and the devs of DE clearly did too as they doubled down on it
i think that was all it really needed to be great, that refinement of shipments and civs which just wasn't really customary back in the day
i rediscovered the game for myself last year after playing a couple hundred hours of aoe2de and deciding to give aoe3de another shot, i've always been a fan of the entire series with aom being my favorite but for some reason i just hadn't touched aoe3 in like a decade
now i play it almost daily lol
I loved AOE 3 the most because of its settings, but I do lament the fact that it is the least active AOE in terms of the attention it is getting,
But I still do hold out hope for and looking forward to the delivery of Denmark and Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth DLC due next year (After it has been delayed)
And I still hope that in the future, the player base will continue to justify them making new DLCs, I'd love for more Asian factions such as Korea and [insert S.E.Asia faction here]. Asia as a whole could use a lot of the "Near East" and could use a lot more expansion and representation.
The artwork looks like something from old warhammer fantasy.
Thank you very much for this video and thank you for bringing WE's recent mishandling of the game and its playerbase into light, like radio silence and no update for 10 months straight, hopefully things improve, as for rest of the video, really well made and don't listen to blind aoe2 fanboys, most of them never played so they don't know what they're missing
I played AOE 1, 2, and $3 and loved them all. I agree that the depth of gameplay in AOE 3 is a different level altogether and lends itself to a greater variety of strategies and overall gameplay repeatability! It's a "more mature" and more innovative game, which is attractive to older players, I think. Maybe those playing AOE II will eventually 'graduate' to playing it.
Great video. Funny enough what makes AoE3 unique is what keeps it away from the crowd, the card system requires a deep knowledge of the game which a casual player (AoE2 player) doesn't have or doesn't have the time to figure out.
In my case, I couldn't play the game on its release many years ago because simply my PC couldn't run it. I stayed with AoE2 but sure AoE3 is the most beautiful game of the AoE franchise. What could it be vs what it is.
Finally some quality content this game desrves, big ups!
Nice to see AoEIII receiving a fair treatment. All of them are amazing in their own ways, after all.
Aoe3 is honestly my favorite. The focus on the early modern period really appeals to me
Until today, I am immersed in the details of fun that this game brings me every day.
The soundtrack of this game i still renember because was super good, like i had this game more than 9 years ago but i still renember.
AoE3 is my childhood game, but since I now enjoy playing competitive, I much prefer AoE2 because of its more serious gameplay (imo). That being said AoE3 will always have a place in my heart.
My personal favorite age game is Aoe3de love the variety and unique aspects of each faction, i also like AOM but not as much since i prefer the PvP/unit interaction in aoe3de, aoe2 i gave a try but it wasnt my thing, i havent tried aoe4 but i think i would like it and plan on playing it in the future.
Im sad to say that i bought only Age of empires 2 and could not run it on steam because the game kinda crashs on the selection menu and i can't get past the faction selection screen for some reason... love strategy games tho and hope they keep up the good work.
That is weird, last I checked there were 15k of AoE2 players on Steam.
It was the first AOE I've played, so I'm biased toward it, but immersion is important, and now I know why I loved it more than AOE 1 or 2.
personally aoe3 is top 3 fav games
i never understood y people hate it i tried so many times to convince my dad to play it to no avail me to the whoul card system is amazing for me and the campaigns THE FUCKING CAMAPIGNS is so good especially the ottoman onethe cannons my 8 year old me and i still asking him for the cd
As someone who mainly plays aoe IV, i really wish III was more popular. I have a soft spot for this game from absolutely fiending this game when i was younger.
It's my most played game ever. Thousands of hours in the campaign & skirmish matches against AI.
How is the multiplayer?
@@fernandozavaletabustos205 I never played multiplayer, so idk.
I always love historical games, even if they aren't even historical😂Like, especially if you like old Japanese or Chinese history, check out Jade Empire, it's an incredibly beautiful world that incorporates historical and mythological aspects to create a pretty cool experience.
I am tracking a game yet to be released called: Tale of Ronin. The art is beautiful and it sounds interesting. Will have to try an age of empires game sometime due to your recommendation
Not ironically, Wol saved the original AoE 3 community in parts
I played AoE1, AOE2, AoM and AoE3 on launch and occasionally ever since. I remember being very excited about aoe3 and sadly disappointed after playing it. I wnated it so much to be better than AoE2 but it just isn't. I played it more than I did aoe2 but that's because I had a laptop when that happened and had none when aoe2 came out.
I understand your bias. I respect your opinion and hope aoe3 stays around for long.
That being said, please respect my opinion and those of the vast amjorty of aoe fans.
I think the changes mechanics that you so love about aoe3 did not fly well with most people including me (who everntually also learned to love aoe3). They didn't make the game better, it was worse. Different does not make it better.
AoE3 seems closer to AoE3 than 2 aside from the ages they are set in. Infinite resources, automated functions and projectile properties are more similar to aoe3.
Although nostalgia makes me yearn for the days of discovering aoe1, I admit that aoe2, M and 3 surpass it greatly.
While it is easy to compare it to the other titles in the series, jus let it go. You don't have to be the best to enjoy a perfectly good game on its own. Let AoE2 continue to deservedly earn it's money, glory and fame. It's the very existence of aoe2 that drives the continued support for the other titles. We can be thankful for that.
Also, also I kinda wish Age of Empires IV should've been more 20th century with V being a more space marine theme.
Asian dynasties went, and still goes so hard
What's your opinion on the remastered series? Does that equalize your ratings? What about Age of Mythology?
I enjoy age of Mythology but I prefer Age of Empires 3. Especially it's definitive edition
the only reason i think it was less loved than AOE 2 is AOE 2 could run on a potato back in the day. i remember for AOE 3 my dad went and bought a new Desktop for us. The home city cards etc made online matches so much more fun, i could play as a rushing nation with a rush deck or a rushing nation with a decent eco etc. also ive never liked how AOE 2 has so few sprites even as a kid it was off putting that my Japanese swordsmen looked exactly like French swordsmen. so i liked the variety in units in AOE 3 (im aware of lot of units are shared but not to the level of AOE2) ill be honest though my true AOE love is the original game i remember my dad handing me the Demo disc and i ended up becoming an Archaeologist because of the love of history that AOE instilled in me.
My favorite Age of Empires game, always and forever ❤
If aoe 3's editor was easier to use, it'd probably be bigger as there would be more custom campaigns and missions
You devinitly have a point, but AoE 2 will be remain my favorite, best, gratest game. But AoE 3 is really fun too and i startet to play it more lately.
The "concept expansion" changed the base game. It's an unfortunate side effect of the Harvest, Build, Destroy genre. You "expand" on the series, and then it changes the base game that was popular for its baseness. Eg. Introducing super units. Suddenly, all strategies revolve around the players creating their civ's super unit, or getting cheesed before they can do so - this, instead of other late game strategies.
This is largely why Harvest, Build, Destroy has not seen very many games. It's difficult to monetize, and additions to the game in the form of DLC often are quite difficult to implement or ruin it. Fortunately for AoE2, the base model of the game has made DLC easier to implement, as it usually involves optional content, such as new campaigns, civs and maps, which don't modify the base game. Even if the civs are unbalanced (*cough* romans *cough*), the community has grown to accept it, because the game has over 40 civs already, so there's not much expectation of balance (though I would imagine proper ladder games would restrict civ choice, otherwise only a few are worthy at that level).
I'd prefer to say that AoE3 is different from AoE2, and that's fine. I would not say that it's "expanded". That selling point is probably what turned a lot of players off. Either way, players of AoE2 and AoE3 are a different crowd. However, I respect that a company wants to create a game in the same genre that's different from a previous title; a willingness to experiment is rare in modern gaming.
Also, AoE3 is probably more historically accurate than AoE2. AoE2 doesn't actually involve proper medieval tactics and the way medieval units are used is not reflective of how it was in reality (eg. skirmishers beat archers and not infantry, because... ? Knights don't charge and can viably stay in melee, because... ?) - to some extent, AoE3 might better emulate small scale 18th century warfare.
However, a minor gripe from me is that, while both games promise a reflection of an entire era of human history (ie. medieval, or early modern), they mostly epitomize a single century, rather than the whole breadth. AoE2 seems to mostly reflect the high and early-late middle ages - 12th-14th centuries. The only "dark age" unit is the militia and the feudal age just has a basic line up. This isn't really embodying those time periods, as age 3 and age 4 are where most of the historical content is concentrated.
The same goes for AoE3 - most of the concentration of history is in or around the 18th century. Musket lines are reflective of 18th century tactics. Cannons are accurate enough to justify napoleonic artillery-spam. The skirmishers are intended to be that era's muzzle-loading rifle men. The units from other time periods are mostly just there for the novelty ("oooh, a pikemen!"), but don't comprise the core of most armies, from what I've found, unless it's some portion of early game. Even the asian dynasties are reflective more of the 18th century. I think with Japan, the only "sengoku age" thing was the campaign - otherwise, it felt like edo period, though I could be wrong. I admit, I didn't really play Japan.
I love it, still played since the day it came out.
I'm with you on this one ! 😁
AOE3DE with the historical skin mod was peak
I played a lot of AoE 1 & 2 back in the days, but only a little bit of 3. Granted, our PC was rapidly aging, leading to poor performances in game.
I guess my rhum-loving version of the game could also be a part of the problem 😅
The only thing in aoe3 I don’t like is the campaign but I am glad that historical battles are added in definitive edition.
And they're no longer doing it
Good to know that!
Age of Empires III is the best as it's the most dynamic. Also Seven AOE games if you count Halo Wars as an Age of Empires Game.
AoE 3 is still my only experience with the series. I've played some of the tutorial, and I'd like to get back to it when I have the time.
People if you feel curious about the game, remember it cost nothing to try AoE3. It´s free to play with 3 rotary civs that can be played even in casual lobbies in multiplayer.
You are in the minority, AoE3 enjoyers. But you’re a proud minority. Persevere, friends.
I may not agree with the overall assessment, but I respect the dedication.
Thanks for the video
For Short
AoE2 is the best for the Gameplay.
AoE3 is the best for the Vibe and authenticity.
For Longer one
AoE2 may have the best gameplay but the unit Sprites are literally European focused, so the Japanese have European Longswords, Halberdiers and Knights.
AoE3 have a much more historical Model, you have your Ashigaru which would switch between the Musket for Range and Yari Spear for Melee.
Ok so, as I said in one comment earlier, here goes my list of reasons why Age of Empires 3 is objectively better than Age of Empires 2, and also the best in the series.
1) Graphics: Age of Empires 3 has the best graphics in the entire franchise, with the most inmersive and realistic dynamics, textures and movements, and the best implemented camera.
2) Campaign mode: Age of Empires 3 has the best campaigns, they are the most immersive and cinematic.
3) Soundtrack: Age of Empires 3 has the best soundtrack in the entire franchise by far. The best music of humanity was composed in the era where the game is set: 1500 - 1830 A.D. And the game's soundtrack fits very well with this fact.
4) Gameplay: Age of Empires 3 has the most comfortable gameplay, which translates into less multi-tasking = more fun and focus on battles. Age of Empires 3 is focused on creating a more comfortable gameplay for the player, without having to worry about controlling every corner of the map. For example: villagers collect resources without needing camps, unit creation in groups, houses with more population so we don't have to build so many houses; mills and plantations where villagers collect food and gold infinitely, a button to send all military units in formation to a point on the map, fewer buildings to progress, only three types of natural resources instead of four, shorter games, etc.
5) Creative aspect: Age of Empires 3 is the most creative game in the entire saga, where each civilization has more than one unique unit. In the case of European civilizations, although many share generic units like pikemen, skirmisher or musketeers, each country has its own unique infantry and cavalry units, such as the German doppelsoldner, war wagons, and uhlans, the Spanish rodeleros and garrochistas, the Russian strelets and cossacks, etc. And in the case of Native American civilizations or Asian or African civilizations, ALL units are unique for these civilizations. And each civilization in the game has its own unique gameplay, with its own unique card decks that further personalize each civilization, also each AI has their own personality... and a lot of other details Im missing, give the game more diversity in the creative aspect in every sense.
I loved 2 but 3 is my favorite.
Yeah AoE3 kicks ass!
hell yea brother!!! DE 3 the best AoE
Nice to see the great game get some love.
It is the best and history will prove us right
Rise of Nations is the best Age of Empires game.
