Unpretentious , but a beautifully structured song that reveals itself effortlessly . I'm so glad we have this song . Perfect . Cilla's voice with Paul's guitar sounding beautiful .
Few people remember that Cilla co-starred on "The Ed Sullivan Show" with her dear friends during their huge U.S. debut. She blew the roof off! I've got it on DVD.
when you hear this you have to admit that cilla had a lovely sultry sweet and sexy voice. Boy could she sing! Bless her!! I love this song so much. I'm learning it on guitar.
@@CalJennings Give him a break Cal. 😅Not like he was performing the song for an audience, he was just showing Celia the parts. If u could be that good in just casual playing as the mood clearly suggests, then he could step it up far more , in an actual professional performance.
I couldn’t believe it when I heard. What an absolute gem & boy he is magic with that guitar. What a treasure. As an aside I had a little shot at Paul covering an old Beatles song. I received a reply a couple of weeks later from Paul , saying glad I loved the music. I was stoked couldn’t believe it . It was his account too.
Agreed. I just wish that the final recording had been kept in this key, to get the smokey beauty of Cilla’s mezzo-range. In a higher key, her voice is more strident… still beautiful, but less alluring, in my opinion. But as George Martin says at the end “it’s far too low for you”. I would disagree, wouldn’t you?
Cilla was in the right place (Liverpool) at the right time (Beatlemania) otherwise she would have sunk without a trace. Her speaking voice is enough to make my ears bleed, never mind her caterwauling when she 'sings'.
Amazing insight into a time period of the 1960s when there was creativity+beautiful people who CARED and Loved each other to make GREAT POP MUSIC🤗👏✌️🙂💚
Man, just listen to those unusual guitar chords and timing for the lyrics and how the melody changes directions so smooth;y and perfectly. McCartney had, and has, such an unusually well developed sense of melody and just think, he had no formal music training and he was only about 25 years old here.
This is just AMAZING! Thank you so much for sharing such a gem. Works so well as simply an acoustic version. Paul's guitar accompaniment is just brilliant.
Superb. Good thing this was preserved. Missing Cilla. She lived in my town. Saw her once in Silk's Restaurant in Puerto Banus in the 80s while she was waiting for her RR car.
Lived round the corner from where Cilla lived for six months 86/7. Great city. Liverpooling their talents here. Priscilla White RIP. Off to Step innside, love. Px
Cilla was such an outgoing woman. She just was Cilla whoever she was with . I tend to underestimate Brian Epstein’s role in the talent that came out of Liverpool in the mid 60’s well before my time but I know all those faces . I love the way she interacts with everybody. Her description of the recording of Alfie was just beautiful. A remarkable video very well done . Would love to know where the Audio came from. I would pay big money for a vinyl copy of a collection of stuff like this. I love George Martin at the end. What a gem.
Description is wrong this was 67 well before the White Album sessions. See : the demo version was recorded as a studio demo at Chappell Studios in London on 21 November 1967, with McCartney on guitar accompanying Black on vocals. That demo was the basis for the single, although whereas the McCartney demos were recorded in the key of D, the final arrangement of the single version was transposed up a fourth to G, to take advantage of Cilla's higher register
Not White Album sessions and not EMI Abbey Road Studios. Paul gave this song to Cilla in late 1967 and she recorded it at Chappel Studios in London. The single was released in the UK in February 1968.
As far as the producer goes , What an amazing guy he was. He had been involved with the Goon Show for many years, There seemed to be a heap of people involved with George Martin & Brian Epstein that completely set the music industry alight at that time . Cilla was so talented. I was about 8 when I convinced my folks to buy one of her records “ You’re My World”
You can learn a lot about recording singers just by listening to this. There's a lot of "flutish breathiness" (some call it "smoke" or "whisky") in Cilla's lower registers. Take the key down and she has to sing low notes for this effect to make its presence felt, take it up and it disappears and her voice becomes much cleaner and far less "jazzy" (although to be fair, there's so much character in there already with all those little nuances and ornaments she adds to the ends of notes, combined with her signature tendency to add a distinctive crescendo "push" to the volume). It turns out that (as we all learned on Ram) Paul himself was very conscious of/interested in experimenting with 'throat rasp levels' as a very rich palette from which he could draw a seemingly boundless range of (often comically extreme and exaggerated) expression. Viz Monkberry moon delight.
Monkberry moon delights vocals are so raw and powerful nothing like I heard from anyone else it must’ve taken a lot from him. 1985 one hand clapping version is also raw and powerful but crisp vocals, only Paul.
@@bigtrip6344 John's 'Twist and shout' vocals are the ones typically cited when considering the fab four's track record for doing anything 'out of character' on the vocal front. Whilst most people's go-to signature raspy vocals tended to be Louis Armstrong's, Rod Stewart's would come up next, probably followed by Slade's Noddy Holder, although the record for ultimate for grittiness undoubtedly goes to Tom Waits. Female vocalists of this type other than Cilla include Tina Turner, Elkie Books, Bonnie Tyler, Cleo Lane and Nina Simone, although with Cilla and Nina it was sometimes more of a nuance rather than being anything which dominated the character of their overall vocal performance.
She had such a distinctive voice. This is one of who quiet songs .Paul is playing he guitar , not bad for a guy who many thought was just playing chords at that time.
This song has the kind of harmonic sophistication and melody as any Burt Bacharach tune. McCartney was acutely aware what kind of song would be right for Cilla Black who was not really a rock n roll singer.
She actually did start out by singing big rock and roll songs in The Cavern Club. Bands like The Beatles , The Four Most, King Sized Taylor And The Dominoes and Rory Storm And The Hurricanes would ask Cilla onstage to join them and sing a song or two while they became her backing band. She added the ballards later on.
Let me tell you -- the demo of Paul playing acoustic guitar and Cilla singing in a lower register - if this had been the master it would have been a huge hit - unfortunately the recording was way over produced, Cilla over sang in a higher register and the arrangement was forgettable -- but the demo has a bosa nova feel and the simplicity of guitar and vocal is oh so enchanting.
Man, Apple records could have made a killing just selling recording sessions audio. This is really wonderful stuff!! On another note: can't understand how Paul didn't end up marrying someone like Cilla who was extremely gifted!! RIP, beautiful babe✨
I know this is late but I didn't mean to put Linda down. She stayed with him until her untimely death, and in the arena of rock performers, that's a gift within itself. But Linda was a good photographer and she held her own when the two of them made music. May she forever rest in peace . . .

Much more bossa nova sounding acousticly than as performed on her show. The show version chorus was belted out. I think it was an innovative thing to do that. Kinda scary actually first time I heard it. Interestingly, it resonates somewhat with Ellison's tune 'Some kind of Wonderful' by Grand Funk Railroad.
