An aspect behind the 306 Maxi Kit Car legend: the car was so well built, in 1997, it ended the "Tour de Corse" (one stage of the WRC championship) in 3rd (Panizzi) and 4th (Delecour), within the same second of the leader McRae. Almost the same thing one year later (2nd and 4th), again behind McRae, and again in the same second.
It's a FWD car, NA engine which develop 280hp, for 950kg (around 2094lbs), against Impreza, Lancer, Escort and Corolla, which were 4WD, turbocharged and developed 300hp for 1200kg (around 2645lbs). It's possible to match a 4WD with an FWD on asphalt, but it's harder on other surfaces.
It was the first brick on the 206 success later in the WRC field.

205 Ti 16 is the Group B rally version and it was absolutely mental! There is the 405 Ti 16 coupe that went to pikes peak. There is an amazing short movie called "Climb Dance" you would be amazed by it. Also you are absolutely right about diesel mileage in a car like this. Regarding the production version, the listed one you found in the US, the XSI, is the mid range sport version, quite rare in 5 doors, but very nice car good engine and chassis. Price is quite ok as it seems clean and low mileage.
But really the version you want is the S16 with the 6 speed (also known as GTI6, depending on the markets). Also 170hp for roughly 1200kg (2650lbs for you americans), this was the best hot hatchback at the time, proper heir from the famous 205 GTI. The engine was good, but the chassis was even better, never a better balanced and fun FWD car!

If I am not mistaken, it's FWD. To have it skidding in curves, there is a "manual hand brake" that operates only on the rear wheels, again if I am not mistaken. The engine is the XU10J4, a 2.0 L 16 valves, atmo (no turbo !). Output is ca. 310/320 HP, max rev. speed ca. 10 000 rpm, and overall car weight ca. 950 kg... A legend !

french car mecanic, and motorsport passionate here: sadly they dont make cars this good anymore, what made them good in the 90 and early 2000 was the lightness coming with those low hp (the evo is above 300hp, but the highest street model had 170hp if im correct) and that was really fun to drive, i owned a 92 peugeot 106 as my first car and i fckin loved it, it had 80hp but for 750kg only. those 106, 205, 306 and 309 where the best peugeots. and in the same time you got the citroen saxo vts and xsara vts, those were beasts as well. in the same era renault had the clio williams and r21 turbo. nowadays we still have renault that goes wild with its renault megane RS, but the other brands got shy. citroen doesnt make a sports model at all anymore they just became the "budget and family friendly peugeot" (both are owned by stellantis), and peugeot has the same hp base (around 200 now) but with x1.5 times the weight at least. and did some shit with cars that could have been awesome at least on paper like the RCZ.
for ther reliability part, lets just say they went from best to worst. the 1.9L Diesel from the 90s was indistructible, my boss had one with more than 660'000km on the clock, only drawback was the hp output as those were NA diesels. but once they introduced the 1.6hdi and put that engine absolutely ANYWHERE (like in 80% of their whole fleet) we hated them. yeah the mileage is great, but injectors fail non stop, turbos fail non stop, here the cliché stuck with "PSA (peugeot-citroen) are cheap af and german cars are expensive" while true for the car price when buying, it was totally untrue once you had to service them, i owned personnally, and worked professionnally on lots of peugeots and bmws from the same years (and yeah many many diesel bmws here) and yeah, bmw could cost you double the price in 2nd hand market, but you just knew that turbo would never fail, i dont even know what a bmw injector looks like and i worked this job for 10 years + now, but those fckin psa, those are a pain for the wallet and a pain to work on.
felle free to ask for anything about them, if i know i'll be glad to answer =)

The Clips you're showing are from Manolo Senra and his 306 Maxi enjoying an amazing second life 2 decades after it was introduced. Those clips are recorded in my homeland indeed (Galicia, Spain). It is quite overwhelming in live. I think in Spain and Portugal we have some of the best hillclimbs of the world.
Those 306 Maxi, are kit cars. All those kit cars are derived from street cars (in this case the 306 2.0L 16v 167hp) severely modified. They have nothing to do with the Group B T16 as others mentioned (T16s are mid-engine protos, turbo, RWD or AWD, but the 306 is front engine N/A, front wheel drive).
During the 1999 season of the "Rallye Catalunya", there was a big complaint from the WRC manufacturers, as the Kit Cars (Front Wheel Drive, N/A, 280hp) became faster ON TARMAC than the WRCs (AWD, Turbo, +300cv). The main complaint was related to expenses/performance: There were amateur teams with kit cars, going as fast as WRC official teams in tarmac stages. After that complaint, the FIA changed the rules and the kit cars were senteced to death in the world wally championsip.

Peugeot was a legendary car brand. They made very reliable cars that kept running. Therefore they were loved in Africa very much. The US was not so successful as you mentioned. Peugeot was also big in racing. In the 80's before the 306 they were getting back in the game with the 205. This model saved the company. The 205gti is one to look for as street version. After the 206, 306 it was really done with exciting cars. Look for a top gear episode about peugeot that got boring. It is hilarious. Nowadays peugeot is looking more exciting again.

Fun fact, most of the Peugeot car had a number with 0 in the middle such 205, 306, 405, etc… it come from the early days of Peugeot where they had a hole in the front to use the crank to start the car. They placed the number on each side of the hole, and the model 21became 201, etc… Also, the first number always make reference to the size of the car… like BMW with Series 1, Series 2, 3, 4, 5… So we know that the 205 is smaller than the 305 for instance. And of course, the last number make reference to the generation like 304, 305, 306, 307…

Another fun thing about Peugeot numbers: In the 60s, Porsche introduced a new car, called the 901. Peugeot told Porsche that they didn't like that porsche were using model numbers with a 0 in the middle. Porsche said OK, and renamed it the 911.

There’s a reason why cars are so different in Europe vs in the US. In the US, the whole infrastructure was built later, when people already learned so much from the history in other countries. So they made the whole roads completely different, very wide, very easy direction using cardinal points (N, S, E, W), with even number for horizontal highways and odd numbers for vertical highways, so the whole way of driving is different and therefore a huge truck or muscle car make sense. The US also had a cheaper gas price, so big V8 also made sense. But in Europe, the whole roads system is mainly based on applying tarmac on the path that were used in the past by horses, going through forests, through valleys, so very narrow roads with a lot of turns. So smaller car such hatchback are most useful there, a huge muscle car couldn’t be exploited fully… not even mentioning the big cities and problems to park. And of course, because Europe love socialism and taxes, they had very expensive gas, and taxes on big engine cars, that’s why manufacturers had to work around the taxes laws to propose something else, and that’s why we see a lot of smaller engine, 4 cylinder 2 liter or less with use of turbo to compensate the lack of horsepower/torque. That kind of combo (hatchback, small turbo engine) was actually a great solution for Rally which often happen on roads in Europe (and therefore with narrow roads with lot of turns). We don’t have to hate one car type to love the other. I love muscle cars, trucks, etc… but I also love small hatchback. It just depends if I’m in the US or in Europe. Both could be fun…

He said P was pulling out of the market simply because Americans weren't buying them. We had a few beers, he eventually said "The problem is, most Europeans don't care if the brakes squeal, as long as they stop the car. Americans don't care if the brakes stop the car - as long as they don't make any damn noise!" I thought they were great cars. Ps: i think i am a carguy, 45yrs and have owned 17 vehicles of 6 different brand , BUT only 1 of them was rearwheel drive. It could be a European thing, we got more cars with frontwheel drive. Practically all small car models were frontwheel driven only.
Diesel used to be huge, but these days they made the fuel more expensive than gas. In 2000 i drove a 1988 Audi 100 2 liter diesel 5cilinder straight from Brussels to Milan on one tank. Granted it is a big tank, ca75l, but That is still 1200km, about 750 miles!! Also remember this one very heavy vehicle in itself with 4 adults and luggage, with only an underpowered engine ( 65hp only) going over mountainpasses. Now Show me a modern gas, hybrid powered or electric vehicle 1. That can do that and 2. That does it cleaner. And i will buy it.

I currently daily drive a very boring 2014 Peugeot 208 1.0l turbo 3cyl, but i also own a 1997 Peugeot 605 2.0l turbo, i've also owned 1996 Peugeot 106 GTi which is the smaller sister to the 306, and i also owned a 2000 Citroen Xsara with a 2.0l dohc engine which shares its platform with the 306 and that Xsara was a hellova daily driver. Peugeot have/had a reputation for making good use of naturally aspirated engines, and making durable diesel engines which felt less agricultural than a lot of competing passenger cars of their time. We here in Finland are also big fans of American cars, i own a 1991 Chevy Caprice classic which is getting a 454 swap in the upcoming year. If you were to import a 306 to the states, i would advise importing a 306 GTi6, although they're more expensive, often times going for 8000€ or more in Europe, they're also considered one of if not the best hot hatches of the 90's and would give a better and more unique experience than just a hum drum trim level.

Nice to see these cars getting some love from the USA. There was actually a 2.0-litre 2WD category in the World Rally Championship and, to try and attract manufacturers to rallying, the FIA created an extension to the rules for 2WD Group A cars that allowed them to be fitted with wider wheel arches and less restrictive intake/exhaust systems (something that wasn't even allowed on the 4WD Group A cars at that point). They were known as "kit cars" because you had to produce 20 kits of the parts, and the extension in the FIA papers was called "variant kit". The category got a lot of support from French manufacturers, as French rallies were mostly tarmac, and it was a good marketing tool. The Peugeot 306 and Renault Megane Maxi are probably the two best known, but there were kit car variants of several cars, including the Seat Ibiza, Ford Escort, Skoda Octavia and Hyundai Coupe. The Citroen Xsara was the ultimate incarnation of the concept, and won two WRC rounds outright in 1999. It used a similar engine to the 306, but was very advanced, with traction control etc. Citroen used it as an early development tool for their later rally programme. There were also 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre cars built to the kit car regulations, including the Nissan Micra, Ford Puma, Peugeot 106 and Citroen Saxo. It was a great concept, and something that the FIA should probably revisit.
