    What up. Diagnosed autistic (age 22) and ADHD (age 30) here. We don't do that stuff. Stims can be vocal, but they don't typically present like Tourette's tics or miming using an ATM hahaha. Most stims are actually pretty subtle (for example, my main one is tapping my collarbone). Even stuff like hand flapping (not one I have) don't look as weird as whatever Elphaba was trying to do. I will also point out, I have no issues with self-diagnosis (it can be really difficult getting a diagnosis), but it's clear to see when someone self-diagnoses to find resources to help them and when someone self-diagnoses to be 'quirky' or 'different'.

      Self-diagnosing autism can be bad praxis, due to comorbidity amongst other things, but I KNOW how hard it is to get formally diagnosed and how expensive it can get if you aren’t on medicaid.
      It sucks that people like Elphaba give people the worst impression possible to that premise, and without the proper nuance.

    • @emstink
      @emstink Год назад +24

      @@Tayl0r_ The thing is, it's fully understandable in USA where you have to pay for diagnostic assessments unless you have insurance. Here in the UK, it's as easy as going to the GP, saying you think you have autism and that it impacts your daily life, and asking for a referral for a diagnostic assessment with a psych. It's completely free. There are waiting lists of up to a year unfortunately, though they do fast track you if you're about to go to uni/school and need the diagnosis quicker or if you're high risk of harm. But you can easily just do it as jaqsre says, as most autistic people do pre-diagnosis, say you're on a waiting list to be diagnosed because you have traits aligning with symptoms.

    I'm officially certified ADHD af (clinically diagnosed with fairly severe ADHD)... I also have other conditions and disabilities that _do_ flare up... I'd never describe ADHD as "flaring up" 🤣. Yeah, sometimes it's more intense or harder to handle due to things like stress, poor sleep, sensory overload etc. or gets ramped up because of excitement e.g... but it's just not a "flare up" - it's not the same as things you acquire because it's hardwired into your brain and fundamentally affects the way you think and process the world - I don't feel like I _have_ ADHD, I feel like I _am_ ADHD - much like I am queer 😅. Kinda hard to explain the nuance, but when you are ADHD, I feel like you intrinsically understand how it's different 🤔

    As a self-diagnosed autistic person awaiting assessment, I think the notion that lack of diagnosis means you don't have it is quite harmful. I am certain I have it because of genetic factors, my traits and prognosis from mental health professionals, there are often many factors in self-diagnosis. The issue only arises if you haven't done the research needed to self-diagnose, I think her claiming she has autism without diagnosis becoming a controversy is mostly people jumping on the hate train, negating the very valid criticisms of her that are out there.

    Yeah that actually happened before during the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. The Spanish basketball team won the gold but then it was discovered that 10 out of the 12 players did not have any disabilities at all and were actually faking an intellectual disability in order to compete, win medals, and get sponsorships. Spain was then immediately disqualified and stripped of their medals and the head of the Spanish Federation for People with Intellectual Disabilities was fined around 7,000$. The best part was that the one who exposed the team as frauds was one of the actual players who won the gold for Spain. He even admitted that the Spanish Federation specifically sought out to find non-disabled athletes and that other Spanish Paralympians who competed in other categories, like table tennis and swimming, and had also won gold were not actually disabled either. The scandal caused the Paralympics Committee to ban all intellectually disabled people from competing in the 2004 Athens Paralympics and stricter screenings would be performed to all disabled athletes after that. The ban was finally lifted in 2009 and intellectually disabled athletes were allowed to compete once again.

    I’ll preface my comment by saying she shouldn’t have lied about having an official diagnosis or entered a competition of this sort without an official diagnosis. Regardless of whether she may be autistic or not, lying about having the diagnosis isn’t okay.
    The autistic community is generally pretty accepting of self-diagnosis. There are many barriers to official diagnosis, there’s diagnosis biases from medical professionals, and sometimes the cons outweigh the pros of official diagnosis for some individuals. Autism isn’t a condition that has medication or anything. You can potentially access treatments for some autistic traits and learn strategies to make life easier, but none of that requires official diagnosis. Official diagnosis does come with some discrimination too. Unless there’s accessibility options you can’t access without medical diagnosis (eg, accommodations at work, school, or uni) then seeking the official diagnosis for many just isn’t worth it. I’m not normally in support of “diagnosing” creators over the internet but as an autistic person I feel pretty confident saying she’s probably autistic lol. She’s still in the wrong for lying about being officially diagnosed.

    Psst, you don't say people 'have' autism, you say someone is autistic.
    I'm autistic myself and she doesn't seem autistic to me, it seems like a personality/mental health thing. But hey, who knows. All we know is that shes very bloody strange.

      About that first thing, as a person who has autism as well I think both of them are right to use. it's exactly the same

      @@somegirlnamedsera personal preference is fine. I just mean in general we like using person first language. To me it makes sense because we don't 'have' anything, we're just autistic.
