- Reaction To Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay (Sydney Olympics 2000)
This is my reaction to Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay (Sydney Olympics 2000)
In this video I react to Australian sport by reacting to footage of the Sydney Olympics 2000 and the famous Gold medal win for Australia in Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.
Original Video - • Men's 4 x 100m Freesty...
You need more context - before the event Gary hall junior said he would "smash the Aussies like guitars".... considering he was the anchor that lost to Thorpe who was a longer distance swimmer it would have been embarrassing for the US - which Aussies kind of love. Then the boys stood on the edge playing air guitars....
And Thorpe had already swum and won gold earlier in the night
Yep, that just rubbed salt into the wound. Loved it. I went to a corporate gig Klimmy did some time later and the clip had "The Real Thing" over the top of it, bloody fantastic!
remember Roy and HG, with their peace pipe, even got Gary Hall jr on the program :)
This was an amazing swimming moment in 2000, many of us were on the edge of our seats. My fave Aussie olympic moment was when Cathy Freeman ran 400m in the 2000 olympics and became the first Australian Aboriginal person to win an individual Olympic gold medal.
Freeman's win was amazing yes, and the tension was huge. But this one has it beat for pure excitement to the last second.
Cathy Freeman a must watch
Yep. This was amazing. Cath was everything. Was then, is now and forever
The Australian cross-country horse riding team where one of the riders finished the course with a broken collar bone to claim gold. Amazing!
My girlfriend and I won tickets to the Olympics and saw this race. It was electric, the boys smashed it. Thorpedo is an Aussie legend!🇦🇺
*Thorpedo
@@NomadUniverse bloody autocorrect 🤨
Incredible, I haven't seen this before, it is always wonderful to beat the arrogant Yanks! Such a brilliant swim from Ian Thorpe, what a champion! We love our team relays!! 🙋💪
this was amazing .. Aussie swimmers are spectacular!!
always better with Roy and HG calling them though especially as Gary Hall Jr the guy swimming against Thorpe said the US was going to break the Aussie like guitars ... and that is how the Aussies responded. I think they played air guitar at the US team at one point .. Gary Hall Jr was on Roy and HG and you can imagine how the interview went!!! worth a look!
To his credit he took it like a champ...but what else could he do?😂
Cathy Freeman's win was an emotional high for us. She won silver in the previous Olympics, and you would think that she had won gold then. She was loved by everyone.
Our Cathy is a legend
I remember Kieren Perkins in 1996 havung JUST made it into the 1500 m. freestyle time. He got lane 8. But the next day he just took off, stayed in front and won. Gutsiest swim over 30 laps I've ever swum. I was a Masters Swimmer at the time and swam 1500 m. races -exhausting as you are going flat out each lap. Perkins rewrote the word courage that day.
Cathy Freeman. That's it! Surprisingly, the best video to watch is the 9 minute version by the American broadcasters, NBC. They give some excellent back ground information to Cathy's story and a really respectful commentary.
^^^^this^^^^ the NBC commentary was amazing.
I've met Michael Klim when he was walking near the shrine in Melbourne. He was asking me about a marathon that was going to be on soon, as I was putting up signs about the roads being closed for that event. One of the nicest and humblest guys I've met in my life.
Micheal was diagnosed with CIDP a debiliating autoimmune disease awhile back. Terrible for anyone but for an athlete at the top level it must be devastating. Those guys made us proud to be Australian, we won't ever forget that race. In fact everyone competing in that olympics was amazing. Good luck to our team in Paris.
so many great memories of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, from Vanessa Amorosi singing hero's to Juan Antonio Samaranch the head of the Olympics saying they were the best games ever and everything in between, and yes, you cant even say 2000 Sydney Olympics without saying Cathy Freeman in the same breath
Thanks for letting me relive such great memories, I was in tears at the end. Wow!
Mate, I'm tearing up watching it now, all these years later. Epic race.
My mate was in the 100m squad, I remember it very very well. One of the most proudest moments was seeing them all do PB's and break through the nerves. What a race.
Some othet classic Olympic moments. 1988 Debbie Flintoff-King 1996 Kieran Perkins 2012 Sally Pearson 2016 Kyle Chalmers
One of the Australian relay swimmers Ashley Callus trained at my local pool.
2000 Olympics was something else. Amazing time!
Certainly makes me proud to be an Aussie 🇦🇺
I sure do remember this. was a Volunteer at the Sydney Aquatic Centre. One day, I was told where to stand outside the Men's Change Room and check the IDs on their bare chests lol. Thorpie came out to win his 400m and almost tripped over me! Thank goodness he didn't !! Such a fun time. Poor old Michael Klim is now disabled with a medical condition 😥
He's got CIDP, my dad does too,it's a horrible thing
@@heathergarnham9555Yes, I just didn't check before I typed. Sorry about your Dad
Ian Thorpe wasn't a 100m sprinter and this wasn't his strongest event, he preferred the 400m and 200m. This was Gary Hall Jnr's favored race, and he was so confident before it that he skited that he would smash the Australians like guitars. Thorpy killed it! Gary said he lived to regret that boast. Thanks for the memory.😊
thorpey always lifted for relays :)
No - Hall was a 50m specialist.
Check out Eric the Eel, he swam a solo race at Sydney Olympics. He had never been in an Olympic size pool. He struggled but the whole crowd cheered him the entire way.
He was from an African country??? Maybe Kenya, maybe Sierra Leone? He was the first to swim in the Olympics' for his country?
Didn't he only learn to swim (get in a pool) for the first time, like 3 months before the Olympics?? It was a beautiful moment, I remember that much...
@@kazwaz78 As soon as @kylieoz8295 mentioned it. It was like a lightbulb moment/ instant flashback. I wanted to jump in the lane next to him & swim beside him giving encouragement all the way. Beautiful moment in time.
@@shaneb4612Absolutely! 🏊💙😁
This was so great to watch back then and now😊
The mens 1500m is also a must watch. I was at the shop when that happened and everyone just stopped and crowded around the tv section.
Absolutely!
Michael Klim now battling motor neurone disease ❤
❤ to Klim
It's not MND it's chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). It's an Auto Immune disease 😕
@@dmoonjYes. You are correct. MND is a different autoimmune disease to CIDP, the autoimmune disease Klim has. From what he said, blood plasma is helping him.
The current generations in like the USA... have NO IDEA... what Austrlians are like..... and our history..... we may have a small population compared to the powerhouses of the world.... but even our small population punch above their weight every single time... whether it be world wars.. whether it be our forces, whether it be our citizens.... NOBODY fucks with an Australlan..... we accept loss when we need to.... but that doesn't mean we don't keep fighting....
Bradbury's 🥇 is my all time favourite 😂😂😂
My favourite moment was (jeez, either Tokyo, or Rome) when the host nation played Waltzing Matilda as Dawn Fraser was presented with her gold medal.
Aussie here. Best bits of 2000 Olympics was Roy and HG, and the (then Japanese head of the olympic Committee) declaring it "the best Olympic Games ever".😊
Never.
Gets.
Old.
I remember this race like it was ystdy. My anxiety level was thru the roof, i couldn't sit down to watch it. Big Mouth Gary Hall Jr that said before the Olympics that the US team would smash the Aussie's like guitars which made the victory even better & the 4 boys played air guitars to rub it in that bit more on the pool deck after Thorpey jumped out the pool. Also i remember hearing my neighbours in my street & the street behind yelling & screaming, that's the impact this race had on us Aussie's. We're first & foremost a sports loving nation, it's the most important thing for majority of Aussie's & for a country with a tiny population we do a great job on the world sporting stage.
A great example is Aussie cricketer, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell miracle innings of 200 runs at the world cup late last year that saved us from losing to Afghanistan which if we lost we'd been outta contention & if u can find it & getta chance check out Maxi's innings coz it's the best innings at a world cup, plus he was cramping so badly he couldn't bat normal & couldn't move either leg yet never once thought of retiring hurt & stayed out there smashing fours & sixes, on no legs but put our country before his own well-being...that shows the never give up Aussie mentality
The 2000 Olypics were the best- The Friendly Games.
I went to some of the swimming at Sydney 2000 and it was fantastic. The atmosphere was just amazing and it was great to have this in My Town.
I went to watch a few different sports during the Olympics and Paralympics and lived every minute of it. The Equestrian events, Synchronised Swimming, Track and Field, Basketball. Wheelchair Basketball is full on and very exciting and the Paralympics Track and Field is just amazing.
Oh thanks so much for reacting to this wonderful moment for our 'Men's Relay' we were so very proud of 'all' our swimmers and athletes ...and all the best for the Paris Olympics soon.
I'm not a sports-oriented person, but this was a great win. Ian Thorpe was a freakishly good swimmer and incredibly mature for his age. BTW, can't remember if you've reacted to Cathy Freeman's 400m win at the Sydney Olympics. An absolutely stunning performance & her victory lap afterwards is something to behold.
2 weeks ago I set an Australian Masters record in that pool and got to put my hands into the hand impressions Ian Thorpe has at the venue - he's got freakin' huge hands - about double the size of mine.
It's an honour to swim at that venue. It feels really special every time I go there and see all the Olympic memorabilia around the pool.
Cathy Freeman winning gold at the Sydney Olympics. Amazing moment
Cathy Freeman at the 2000 Olympics was awesome, but my fondest memory was the trampolining at the Sydney Olympics. Just a personal fav because I won a ticket in the raffle for kids who couldn't afford to go. We got a medal and we weren't expected to get anything & I got to see it. Normally you only see a medal with ticket to the more popular & expensive events. It was such an added thrill. 😁
For me there was nothing better than watching Kieran Perkins at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta win the 1500m freestyle. He barely made the team and a lot of people didn't think he was much of a chance. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Ian Thorpe, Cathy Freeman...all our Olympians ❤
My favourite Sydney Olympics moment was the TV series The Games. Very funny stuff and well worth a watch.
He has already reacted a few times to them
@@FM-jg1yr I've probably watched them and just don't remember! I'll go back and have a look, thankyou.
Almost exactly a year later we nearly lost Thorpy. He was in New York on Sept 11 2001 & was going to the Twin Towers to check out the view from the top. He arrived but realised he had left his camera back at his hotel, so he went back to get it. While he was away the first plane hit.
Yes I remember that he definitely had a guardian angel that day.. it would of had to of been so scary for him being amongst that horrendous moment in history.. 🧐😔💔
This victory was all the sweeter as Gary Hall Jr said they were "Going to smash them (the Australians) like guitars. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Most underrated team in Olympic history but for a few months before there was a crazy buzz around our squad
Gary Hall Jnr of the United States said his team would "smash the Australians like guitars"....so our victorious lads played air guitars to the Yanks at the end of the race. It was beautiful!
Definitely Cathy Freeman
Thrilled to see this again ❤
You might want to check out Dawn Fraser. Dawn was a monster swimmer , who also enjoyed creating a bit of havoc. A real character.
Also this was 2 for 1 world records (Klim leading off and the team). Second gold medal in an hour for Thorpe & he was only 17 at the time.
The 4x200 when they played "land down under". I've been at meets with these guys. Thorpe's feet are massive and Hall is a goofy guy... I've been to dinner at his parents. They had a 25 yard pool at home.
Poor old Klim now has CIDP . They made us jump around the Lounge that day . The best Olympics ever
It was awesome, wasn’t there but we were screaming at the tele 🎉🇦🇺😎
I was 13 when this took place, I remember the Americans saying they were going to “smash us like guitars” hence the air guitar when we smashed them 🤣
This was the Aussies response to Jerry Halls ' we will smash them like guitars'. This video cuts off the section immediately after the race where the Aussie team played 'air guitars'.
This was my favourite win. Beating the yanks is always so good. 😂 Especially getting the world record. Michael Klim was amazing first up.
This was an exciting race !
Cathy Freeman's race was the pinacle for me. sydney olympics 2000 ..
I also love Keiran Perkins 1500m win...maybe 1996...
The best moment for me was Cathy Freeman winning the 400 metres race on the track that was my best moment
What you need to know is the Americans were trash talking before the event saying they would smash the Aussies like guitars. The footage cut off as soon as the race was won but what you would have seen was Klim and then his team mates started to air guitar.
Australian population 25 million , US population 350 million not bad for a minnow in terms of population.
Wasn't it 24 million back then? 🤔
Point still totally stands though; Australia "punches above it's weight" in nearly all areas.....Sport, technology, medical research....
We have one of the highest medal to population ratio. I think we only get beaten by a country like Lichtenstein because they dominated is some shooting or equestrian events and have a population less than a million or something like that.
We have had world champions in so many sports from golf, squash, shooting, and equestrian through to track and field, hockey and the various types of football.
We love our sports, both team and individual!
Michael Klim, the guy who swam the first lap, is now very sick with I think cancer. He's a fighter and I wish him well.
For another awesome moment, try Keiren Perkins 1500m Commonwealth Games 1998 I think it was. He wins from lane 8.
The US said they were going to play them like a guitar!
Cathy Freeman is probably the other one we all remember.
John seibom butterfly from memory he was swimming lane 8 Something special
Jon Sieben, 200m Butterfly, 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Lane 6
I was in uni during those Olympics and there were TV's all over campus with the news of his win being yelled from the lifts as they went up and down the building I was in. I was in a crowd who watched his swim and when he won the screams were deafening and people were hugging and kissing each other. Such an amazing moment!
The lead up to this Gary Hall Jr said in an interview that the Americans would smash the Aussies like guitars.
Your clip didn't show it but on the pool deck the Aussies played air guitar in the direction of the Yanks.
Take That 🇦🇺🏊🎸
Betty Cuthbert 400m win Tokyo 1964
Michael Klim now lives with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a condition where the body attacks the protective covering surrounding the nerve fibres, causing sensory loss and deteriorating limb use.
He is getting blood plasma treatment which is helping.
Checkout Eric the eel amazing Olympic moment🤣🤣🤣
How has no one mentioned Steven Bradbury yet???
Pretty sure they changed the rules after this so you can’t get out of the pool till the last swimmer finishes
Sorry - typo- ever seen.
I've always hated the idea that medals are seemingly compared equally. Like a single swimmer/runner could enter multiple events and earn multiple medals in a matter of minutes of competition yet let's say an entire team of hockey players (I know nothing of hockey) would need to play potentially hours of top level competition to in the end share a single medal (count) for the entire team.
I don't think there is a fairer way to tally the medals, one medal per event. I understand that a swimmer or runner can win multiple medals for seemingly less effort, but they put in tens of thousands of hours in training and competition before getting into an olympics as well. There are 11 players on a hockey team and 2 or 3 substitutes and all for one event. A 100m sprinter there's only one or two spots so the competition is fiercer.

awesome foursome
were better.!
☺️😊😃
✌🏻🇦🇺🌏🤘🏻
Oarsome foursome?
The damn YANKS had only ever won the Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle event at the Olympics. They bragged that they'd SMASH US LIKE GUITARS.
They were made to choke on those toxic words. Sucks to be the Yanks, I guess... 🤣🤣
I was lucky enough to be an employee of ORTA (transport) for the Sydney 2000 Games.
