    Honestly the best part about having no difficulty options is the shared experience among all players. once you add sliders some bosses become a cake walk and no one really has one shared experience with the game like Souls players have. Its almost like a college degree when you beat a souls game because you know you went through the exact same struggle as everyone else and came out on top.

      Its been my opinion that there have always been difficulty settings in souls games. Its just depends on your build, approach, and how much cheese you pour on the bosses. Some call it balance issues, I call it difficulty. The best part of these games, is that every build feels fun. If I cheese a boss with sorcery, im missing out on every other way to beat him which are all super fun on their own. The replay value is souls games proves it. *IMO*

    The only places that have really standout open world ambient music were Altus, Caelid (cause it's hard to forget that sound), and the underground areas. I couldn't even tell you what the mountain top area sounds like or if it actually has an ambient OST or not, Liurnia's isn't bad either but it's so chill that I kind of tune it out like white noise

    • @LtCdrXander
      @LtCdrXander Год назад +10

      It's undeniable that Caelid's ambient music is awesome. The crystal tunnel music is also really good imo. Limgrave and Liurnia are good, but as you said, you kind of just tune them out. Altus music is really good and is one of my favorites. It feels holy and solemn at the same time. Too bad it gets drowned out by all the creepy sounds that the Wormfaces make (I seriously avoid that forest because you can hear the Wormfaces' creepy noises from far away, and they scare me lol). Mountaintops music fits the snowy theme, but it also isn't very interesting and is honestly the most forgettable for me, next to maybe Gelmir. Leyndell is probably my favorite of the legacy dungeon themes. Siofra/Ainsel River ambiance is great. The shakers and didgeridoo-esque sounds are really unique. Stormveil Castle is good, but I dislike how the theme is reused for every fort. One of my favorites is actually Ordina's music. It's literally only one or two sustained notes, and there really isn't much going on, but the creepy atmosphere really adds to the tension, especially with the invisible assassins around. Overall, I'd say that the ambient music in ER as a whole is about an 8/10. The Caelid music is awesome, and it definitely bumps the score up a point for me. The Caelid day, night, and combat music are all super memorable, and the area itself is definitely my favorite in the game next to the underground rivers.

    If there were to be a difficulty slider, I would NOT want there to be "easy, medium, hard". I would want there to be "easy" and "the way it was intended to be" or something. Because I don't want to constantly have an inner struggle as to whether to choose normal or hard, especially if the only difference is enemy HP and damage. Because then, if I play on hard, I would feel like I was just gimping myself, and if playing on normal I would feel like I was cheating.

    About the ambiance - they have a specific goal in mind with ambiance. Like, they do have it, it's just only in specific places. Majula has the calming music, Firelink Shrine has the sad, almost depressing music, bosses have their epic music, but exploration doesn't always need ambiance, especially if you have other sounds, like enemies and such. Bloodborne is a perfect example. I don't think ominous strings or some low bassy humming wouldn't add much, if at all, to the atmosphere. Especially since most of the times music is reliant on timing to really enhance the feeling, and if you mistime it, then it falls a little flat.

    I find that most games adjust difficulty by simply increasing enemy health and damage. That way of artificially increasing difficulty doesn't make the game challenging in a fun way. On the flip side, if you decrease the hp and damage too much, then you can just one shot the boss or tank through all its attacks, defeating the purpose of the souls experience. Gideon is a good example - actually a really hard fight if you don't two shot him, but most people never even find out his attack patterns. Souls games are a curated experience. You don't get omakase and ask to substitute each dish. Also, NG+ is basically the difficulty slider most games have... it just only goes up.

  • @Golden-ek2ku
    @Golden-ek2ku Год назад +3

    I'll still fight to the death that ds2 (softs), is better than people think. Is it the best fromsoft game? No, not by a longshot. But I think it has more redeeming factors that people just overlook because ds2 just has the overwhelming negative stigma. Also with a difficulty slider, I think that all fromsoft games have meaningful ways to reduce difficulty, like upgrading the weapon grabbing souls for levels or summoning in help. Elden ring is the biggest example of this where it's so easy to collect runes and new equipment upgrade your weapon and with the addition of spirit ashes you no longer rely on having to complete specific questlines to get help with a boss. But if there was a difficulty slider for these games it wouldn't be that big of a deal, NG+ especially in elden ring is entirely just a difficulty slider for players who want more challenge, and even with elden ring's ease there are still many new players who are immediately off put by the sharp difficulty that they may not be used to and a difficulty slider isn't going to ruin a game.

    I like every game to have customization. I think ARK: Survival Evolved is a mid game, but on thing I love about it is that I can change so many sliders about various options in the game, or I can just leave it default. I wish every game had an "advanced options" tab or something, with a ton of sliders and radial options that controlled tons of aspects of the game. ARK's was filled with a lot of similar options, so it looks like more than it is, but it is still awesome.
    This is my way of saying that, yes, I think this game should have a difficulty option. That said, it is up to the devs what they think fits their game best.

    • @LuciferLuckless
      @LuciferLuckless Год назад +2

      I think a factor in this discussion that I never see brought up despite how important it is is that Elden Ring and the Dark Souls games before it have this pseudo-multiplayer thing going on. A game that's explicitly always online like WoW or that's explicitly competitive like League of Legends or Hearthstone doesn't have difficulty options for pretty obvious reasons; competitive games should be fair and balanced for each player and in MMOs you occupy the same world with the same NPCs. Dark Souls is sort of mmo like with how other players can enter your world at basically any time, as co-operators or as invaders.
      This multiplayer factor makes the question of "how would we implement difficulty options" more difficult than just "add an easy mode." After all, if you invade someone's world, they will often have co-operators helping them, and to overcome this numbers disadvantage invaders will often try to use the level and its enemy NPCs against the host. But how does this work if you invade a host who's on easy mode? Do the enemies and traps in their world do less damage to the host, thus making it harder for the invader to use them against them? Does the invader themselves do less damage because of the host's difficulty setting? What if the invader is on easy difficulty? Do they do more damage? Have more health? This also affects co-operators - what if someone on easy mode wants to be summoned into other people's worlds? Do they just have to suck up the fact that they might be summoned into a hard mode world and struggle more than they like? Should easy mode players and hard mode players be kept entirely separate, when this divides the online community into smaller chunks and might lead to longer wait times, worse matchmaking, more latency, etc?
      This is not to say that there would be no way to find reasonable compromises to these problems and make a game like Elden Ring that has its weird multiplayer system while still offering difficulty and accessibility options. MMOs don't typically have difficulty options for their overworlds, but raids and other instanced content often do. Alternatively, you can take the simple but somewhat Draconian option of just excluding all easy mode players from engaging in those types of multiplayer, while still letting them make use of things like messages and bloodstains. But the point is, this persistent multiplayer nature of From Soft's games means that there are a lot more things to consider when designing accessibility or difficulty features, so it's more understandable that they wouldn't make the effort. I don't think this necessarily excuses them entirely, and games like Sekiro and Armored Core 6's singleplayer content don't even have this excuse. But I also don't think that every product should necessarily be made to please every consumer, sad as it is that some people may be unable to get the same satisfaction from these games for reasons out of their control. At least modding exists.

      just play Elden Ring Reforged. It comes with alot of different difficulty settings to mix and match and is insanely hard on maxed difficulty. Enemy AI is relentless and hyper aggressive not giving you any pauses in combat, stealth is heavily nerfed, enemies regen health after not hitting them for a while, poise damage is reduced and you can't backstab in fight. Upgrade materials were also shuffled around, so you can't cheese early upgrades and need to actually progress to get high materials.

    3:32 I don’t think there “isn’t” a difficulty modifier as having better stats from farming significantly increases your chances of winning, that hardest boss from software has ever created could be in front of you but it doesn’t matter because your magic/ashes do so much DMG and you have so much health along with upgrading armor and weapons as far as you can before actually having to go to the next area to get required materials. Difficulty is a equation that’s made up of dps from both parties movement from both parties and survivability of both parties

      Yeah but they arent trying to acheive the same things. And i quite honestly dont think Ng+ is a good idea for the elder scrolls games. There are no bosses to refight, and the games difficulty isnt a strong suit. Part of the reason i love the elder scrolls games is because after you beat the main story, the people in the world recognize your acheivements.

    My 2 cents on the difficulty stuff: Adding difficulty options just allows more folks to enjoy the game. Especially for folks who may have limiting factors such as disabilities and don't want or aren't able to overcome those disabilities to play the game without them. And while an argument can be made that not every game is for everybody, I'd definitely want to broaden my scope as a developer to get MORE people playing my game and thus getting more money out of it. But also, adding more options doesn't take away from anybody who wants to still play it on that grueling difficulty! (And before anybody asks, I collectively have over 5K hours in all of the Souls games, not including Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Bloodborne. Pretty sure that entitles me to weigh in on this just a little bit thru experience)
    Other stuff: YES! I wish FromSoft would include ambient music for more than just their boss fights. The boss tunes are awesome and all, but imagine if we got that awesome music everywhere!
    Great run Gino! Glad you finally got around to doing this one! Death's Poker is a lot of just ridiculous fun!
    As for liking the souls games in general, I think I definitely agree with Gino there. They're not "The most amazing games" out there. I have more fun with them in challenge runs or as a casual playthru once or twice. They can be fun to just roam around in and do nothing, but I think there are genuinely better games for that.

      @@1-Osbn having to directly interact with the video to get the most out of it should never be the goal. In some moments, like picking stuff out of the background, that is a valid argument. In response to Difficulty Sliders, the way I see it is the developers have an intended experience for the game. As an example Doom Eternal's INTENDED, DEVELOPED, experience was the hardest difficulty. I believe if a developer doesn't add a difficulty setting it's because the game is already balanced around the intended experience.

    The Death's Poker is in my mage's loadout and I love the weapon. For PVP, I'm not really good at using it because I have low STR and HIGH INT so it's just the WA that does good damage (it scales purely with INT) while the r1/r2 are pathetic, however for coop and solo play it's great against large enemies. The Ulcerated Tree Spirits and Erdtree Avatars turn into trash mobs, I can literally beat the latter in sub 10 secs just hitting the WA two times (R1 version) and I mean the late game mountaintops version that splits in half as well as the frost one in the forbidden lands.
