No affence my friend but I think you are an amazing teacher and guitarist. I've learnt so much from you. Thanks for your time and insperation. And really cool presentation. Its a lot of fun.

In January I asked God to speak to me and the same night I had a dream and i heard somebody talk to me while I was on my bed and my whole body shook as if I was being been struck with thunder throughout my entire being abd after I turned around and saw a man in white clothes stare at me face to face and his face was like a galaxy full of stars to best describe it in the natural. I floated backwards with so much love hitting me and gladness it was amazing, so the next day I woke up and my life is still surrendered to Jesus to this day and me and Jesus go out into town and i've seen people healed instantly when I prayed for them and saved because of Jesus and his great love for us all. If anybody wants to know if God is real I encourage you to ask hin for yourself because he isn't fake or evil but actually he loves you and wants you to have eternal life. You rock Shred, for me, you are one of the best guitar and music teacher on this platform. Keep doing theese awesome lessons. I wish I could jam with you some evil tunes in person, you rock man!
Aeolin mode for me. Though all the modes were beautiful in their own right. Celtic, Gaulish landscapes were invoked, maybe a medieval merchant with his caravan, singing and vibing along his way. 🍀🌿
Can't say enough how glad I am to find this video. Any time I look into modal scale tutorials the first thing they say " these are use frequently in pop music". This video is the only one I found that helps you use the modes for a medieval/ fantasy sound
I stumbled around for an hour before finding your video, and you told me exactly what I needed to know in 6 minutes. Thank you for making basic sense of this for me. Liked, subbed, and staying eval as instructed!!
I will say Dorian is most medieval for me this is awesome lesson I have been searching for this type of music on guitar for long time it can benefit my playing a lot.
i felt the mid-evil the most from the dorian piece. i mashed 2 modes together because i kept using the vii in phrygian so i expanded to the vii, i , II, III and call it the "fridge door" mode, but i resolve to the phrygian root
Thanks for this post. I've wanted to play this kinda stuff forever. I'll see if I can make it work on a banjo. Got a dulcimer recently, but it'll take some time to learn that.
Wow, this is the lesson that I've been looking for so long :) Thx, this helps a lot! I saw a video of you using a harmonic minor scale to play medieval music. Can you dive deeper into it? What chords to use? :) More powers to your channel, subscriber here!
Great stuff. Don't know the first thing about theory, but although these chord progressions feel clearly med-evil, mouha-ha-ha, once played in a modern context they also seem awfully familiar from prog rock in general, and even remind me a lot of the Alan Parsons of my youth (in 1812).
This makes me want to watch "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"... for the nine-hundred and seventy-sixth time. ( And later... I will fire-up some HAMMERFALL "Legacy of Kings"! )
He's using reverb on Acoustic and than adds something that sounds like a simulated flute or penny whistle, I'd suggest just buying a penny whistle for $15, D is the standard key but you can buy different keys that are different sizes even larger than low D which are used along with Irish Ullean pipes in soundtracks like Braveheart and Titanic. Generally the idea is to make your guitar sound something like an Irish Bouzouki or Octave Mandolin and use some sort of wind instrument to accompany it. See Corvus Corax and Eluveitie for the diversity of such trad instruments
Great dude! Thanks! 😄I listen to Blackmore's Night and that's why I'm here. I play guitar (RnR; hard; blues; metal) n I wanna explore new horizons, for that I love your video. The end is epic with burning red horns! 👹
Mixolydian is probably the most Medieval sounding, since that b7 is so idk "European"? You can even do a Dominant 2 5 1, off of G Mixolydian (with A Minor and Dorian). For some reason that combination brings out that antiquated vibe, probably the voicings.
Thanks shred! Heavily inspired by the lesson. I think I'm going to write something in each mode over the weekend. Stay mid- EVIL my friend. Muh ha ha ha!
At first I thought these sounded a little Irish, but that's probably just down to Mixolydian, Aeolian and Dorian being prolific in Irish music. The only other mode used in traditional Irish music is the Ionian.
You are correct, but the minor v chord was rarely used, at least not until the Romantic period. Instead the V chord was formed from the harmonic minor form of the scale, since it contains the raised leading note which resolves more satisfyingly onto the tonic.

Oh well; the style of your presentation doesn't necessarily suit my sense of humor; BUT: You gave me/us a lot of valuable information! I thank you for this from the bottom of my heart! Nevertheless, there are still a few more questions: which chords can I use to further expand my harmonizations and still compose "in-style"?
Absolutely love your channel! For some time now I have been stunned about the 'primary chords' of the different scale though, as you talk about in this video as well...how do you 'find' them? The most common refference for 'primary chords' are the 1, 4 and 5...so I'm confused :-P

John Petrucci’s Glasgow Kiss is a great example of Mixolydian medieval sounds in action!
Hm interesting
Love that one. It takes me on a ship to Scotland everytime I hear it.

Aeolian sounds like Game of Thrones or anime.
Dorian sounds like JRPG soundtrack, especially Secret of Mana.
Mixolydian is the medieval "party mode."
Something I hear a lot in medieval music is switching back and forth between aeolian and dorian in the same song
