A much easier way is to pump the hose up and down into the tank while covering the hose with your thumb as you pull the hose up then push the hose down fast cover it with your thumb quickly then pull it up again. It will work every time.
Yo Man - my (limited) understanding of the science behind it suggests that your method would also be effective. The object is to make the air pressure in the hose less than atmospheric air pressure. You would achieve it by directly decreasing the air pressure of the hose whilst Aussie Overlander did it by increasing the atmospheric air pressure in the tank relative to that of the hose by blowing into the tank all the while covering the tank’s exit/entrance. Sound stuff! Thanks for the tip.
When I was in Venezuela in the end 90s, our car ran out of gas and a taxidriver pulled over and gave us some from his tank via siphon. Didn't want anything for it.

I've just been trying this for 30min and extracted about 5ml of fuel. Unless your tank is brimmed, don't bother.
Didn't work on Mazda mpv 1996. every time I blew, only a little bit would come out. Did it about 100 times
