I am happy to see you teaching basic machining skills again. I subscribed in the first place because I was learning a lot from you. Thanks, glad to see you are doing these again.
I had wondered about the rationale behind radiusing the teeth, but after reading the answers below to the same question it makes more sense now. Good to see you doing what you do again Keith, hope you're doing ok.
Grandad was tool n cutter grinder at Portsmouth navy yard nh..32 yrs..I went to shop school at the end of his life ..I wish I had more time with him to acquire more of his knowledge..his teacher was the teacher of my professor an in his name I got a scholarship...think the biggest pay it forward of my life... js...cheers
Hi Keith, great info as usual! Side note, my wife is a principle at a very prestigious private Catholic school in NC. A mom of a fourth grade kid complained about her kid having to say the pledge every morning. My Wife had a full refund check for her in five minutes. Kid is still there, saying the pledge...
I went to a trade school in New England my shop teacher would beak a band saw blade into 6 inch pieces and have us weld it back together over and over untill the blade would cut again. He would check to see that the teeth were free of welds and had chip clearance. Thank you for your contribution to the trade I hope there are kids watching you work at the level you do thank you
I'm sure you mentioned the fillet radius on the keyway, but I had forgotten the details and I certainly didn't remember about how to grind the teeth on a wheel cutter. Thanks for this amazing information.
Hi keith great video you do great work I really enjoyed the video ty again for great work your a great person and you inspire others to live the legacy that a few have forgotten. Ty and g bless
Keep up this stuff man it is really informative and helpful. Not to mention it makes for a good watch

"Grinding" skills are SO essential. Thanks for pausing to pass on a bit of what you know. As you know, grinding occupies a goodly share of an apprentice's work time.....
Thank you for sharing this video. That has made my frosty Monday morning. I hope your okay. Really miss your videos and when you post it’s an absolute pleasure, so get your kettle on & relax as you know your gonna enjoy it.👈
Well done Keith... thanks... looking forward to more sharpening videos from you. I have a commercial jig for sharpening these cutters but need some advice on proper use...
Thanks for showing us that certain tasks can be done by hand even though most viewers would recommend the use of fancy [and expensive] specialty tools. Hand work is just fine if you take it slow and test the results often before you've cut too deeply...
I am thinking that the freehand grind would make better cuts because the slight differences in the cutting surfaces would avoid attachment from cuttings. Yes; we needed a new skill and BAM there it is, Keith making the whole world smile again. Then keeping the walk and talk he makes those cuts in the same 25 minute video. Wobbles? I don't see any wobbles! Just an expert hummm from the grinder.
I'm so old I acquired a nice Cinn cutter grinder 25 years ago and thought I would grind tools after I retired, dam inserts ruined that plan, haha.I used to silver soilder new carbide on cutter body's and grind to specs. That was when most larger shops had their own cutter grinder departments.
Thanks for the time and effort you put into sharing your shop time. I watched the video twice and I hope I did not miss answers to my questions. Do you put a radius on the edges of the key you install? What is the purpose of the radius? Does it make the keyed area torsionally stronger.
I have a 25.5 mm carbide cutter to reduce .1mm and here is my favorite machinist! Thank you sir for the inspiration, God bless the United States of America.
Hope you don't mind if I skip your intro , I have said that enough for a lifetime along with many swears to uphold the constitution , now that I would say many more times, many just see it as a piece of paper but to me it is the living embodiment of our country.
What's that maze-looking thing under the grinder at 4:30? Looks like it's one piece, pretty deep, and… cast? how do you even fabricate such a shape? And if it's cast, I wonder how many hours went into making the pattern for that…
Hi Keith, you may have mentioned it in the video, if so I missed it, would I be correct in thinking the reason for the radius-ed corners is to help prevent cracking in the shaft?
I was also thinking you have a shop full of machines to build stuff but you came up with a block and a plate to grind the cutter. Hey if it works it works.
Sir, I'm enjoying your videos. Hand grinding cutters seem to be a disappearing art. Last 2 shops I've been in, I was the only one allowed to do it, and not allowed to teach anyone else. They were worried about about possible cutter loss. But how else do you learn? It's a disappearing art.
oh Mannn. You sure you couldn't put together some kind of JIG to do that. I know your skilled, but it doesn't look like there will be a lot of consistency doing it "FREEHAND"... Just a thought. Bill Berry
You could make a jig if that made you more comfortable but this man is results oriented. Not his first rodeo here. He knows it will work out just fine.
Hey Keith.. sorry if you covered this before... but whats up with the beard trim? is it a change because of the various personal things happening in your life right now?
You really need to move to Seattle Washington. Boeing, Boating ,Air Force, Navy. Come on we have more water than you. Also we have better weather then you. Just think about it .

Thanks,, just bought a Sheldon horizontal mill with 10 cutters and you just taught me how to sharpen them, thanks
I had wondered about the rationale behind radiusing the teeth, but after reading the answers below to the same question it makes more sense now. Good to see you doing what you do again Keith, hope you're doing ok.
Loved the way you explained the setup. Eagles are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to do the pledge

As always, clearly explained and demonstrated. Good to see basic machining. I have a lot to learn. You are a great teacher. Thank you. Shalom.
Thanks Keith! It's always a treat when you post a video!
Great video on sharping cutters good money saver when you can sharpen you own cutters.

Yes! A new video with Keith!
Hey! TPAI, do you grind your cutters on BHs? :-)
So nice to be able to tune your own cutters my friend. Saves on a lot of things and lengthen service life as well. It's neat to see how you do them.
I'm sure you mentioned the fillet radius on the keyway, but I had forgotten the details and I certainly didn't remember about how to grind the teeth on a wheel cutter. Thanks for this amazing information.
Gee, I have been watching for six years. Nice video.
Good common sense, excellent technique and a LOT of patients. Very good. Thanks for sharing.
Hi keith great video you do great work I really enjoyed the video ty again for great work your a great person and you inspire others to live the legacy that a few have forgotten. Ty and g bless
Thanks Keith, I learned a lot about whats needed for my new sailboat shaft. Much appreciated!
Glad see you back sir, can't wait til next time!
Thanks for the informative video. Keep them coming Keith.

"Grinding" skills are SO essential. Thanks for pausing to pass on a bit of what you know. As you know, grinding occupies a goodly share of an apprentice's work time.....
I've used an old mag base to hold the tool/cutter and clamped an aluminum plate to the grinder table. Worked very well

A living wealth of knowledge

I'm a grandfather now hope my place at work still be here see these machines we got at work Micky UK south shields marine school since 1851
What you were doing took a lot of patients, know how and practice. It's good you share your knowledge, thanks. :-)
Thanks for another great video!!!! Best wishes!!!!!
Glad to see you posting vid's again . COOL
This is great information. Actually, the second time around, I felt that it was more revealing to the camera and we viewers. Thank you.
I’m learning too. Best of all, enjoying it.
very thanks for you time mr fenner
I like the transmission valve body in the background!
An artist at his trade! Great work. I am looking for a horizontal mill like yours. Any larger would be too large for my shop.
I am thinking that the freehand grind would make better cuts because the slight differences in the cutting surfaces would avoid attachment from cuttings. Hola meu amigo excelente trabalho!Que bom ver o amigo trabalhando,já estava sentindo falta de ver seu trabalhos!Obrigado por compartilhar!
I was SO impressed with the way you started your video with the pledge of allegiance that I subscribed and "Liked". Go brother, GO!!!
That is getting it done!
Thanks for the video.

I watched the video twice and I hope I did not miss answers to my questions. Do you put a radius on the edges of the key you install? What is the purpose of the radius? Does it make the keyed area torsionally stronger.
It removes the stress riser that would be in a square bottom keyway. ;{)
What’s the reason for the 1/16 radius? Reduce the possibility of splitting in a sharpe corner?
Jack I n Missouri
Yes. Takes the stress concentration out of the corner so a fatigue fracture doesn't begin there.
Thank you.
I have a 25.5 mm carbide cutter to reduce .1mm and here is my favorite machinist! Thank you sir for the inspiration, God bless the United States of America.
I've done this using a magnetic base to hold the cutter on a brass plate. Try it! I've had my own job shop nearly 50 years! Cheers.
I have been looking for a cutter grinder that I could afford. All I really need is a flat plate and a square block.
DUH!
Thanks,
John

Why are you using gravy for coolant?

I was also thinking you have a shop full of machines to build stuff but you came up with a block and a plate to grind the cutter. Hey if it works it works.
does the keyway require a slight radius since right angles are a fracture point?
It certainly isn't a bad idea! But not required.
Enjoyed Keith!
ATB, Robin
Great opening, The Pledge of Allegiance.
Thank you, Jack in Missouri
Keith,
Whu is there a radius in the bottom of the keyway ? is this special for marine ?
Thank You
Alec
LOVE my new Patriot Attitude cap. Thank you for everything, Keith.
I hate to bother u but do you have any reconmendtion on fixing a atv case
Thanks Keith! Did you get a new camera? Things look different, for the better!

That coolant it nasty! There always has to be one smartass in the group🤣
Hi Keith I have a question for you, I found a milling machine Prapas fva should I bye it cost 2500 euros
3rd to comment...HI KEITH! Proceed lol! Watched video, LIKE IT! time to hit the hay, Thanks for posting a Sunday nightcap.
hi nice work
Missing your videos brother. Hope all is well
are you sure you haven't shown this before ? nun the less thanks for sharing!
Thanks Keith! Can you show us sooner than later how to dress that other side please? Thanks!
Hello Keith way not send the old cutter to Steve Summers and see what he can do with it
I think Steve doesn't have a radius grinding attachment. Now someone go give him one so we can see how to use it lol
enjoyed,nice job
scallop handrolls are good
So far two people show they don't know how to hand grind!
Cheers from John, Australia.
say again?
@@rupert5390 Two Dislikes at that point in time. John.
Oh get it - some of these dislike folks must be the dislexic ones thinking thumbs down is a good thing only explanation i can think of .
@@rupert5390 34 now. John.
37 now.
Those are the factory employees in China who see they won’t be selling any cheap rubbish to Keith any time soon.
Keith, do you always go .010" deep on your keyways? I go .005" Max.
Your a maniac for doing that by hand like that wow buaahhahahahahaha
By the way... I'm right down 195 in fall River...machine shop manager for a high end fixture company
Keith, I love the Pledge of Allegiance but my wife is start of object to my yelling "PLAY BALL" following its' recital. LOL

Hans Pcguy I’m well aware of this mans abilities...
More information in the future. This subject is worthy of a series.
Hey Keith.. sorry if you covered this before... but whats up with the beard trim? is it a change because of the various personal things happening in your life right now?
I sure wish you would wear a mask. You are too important to us!
Hey wait a minute, you cut off your rubber band scruff. Thanks for sharing.
"sounds uniform" ... Engineer's Canon in D - music to the ear - eat your heart out, Pachelbel!
good
Get down Keith!
Huh. stagger with helical flute you need to pin the setup to follow the spiral.never get
Od flat with that set up
Keith
I’m like u, I like them tiny tight fits
u lost weight mate ?
Can you really call it a "standard" if it involves a wall of different sizes? Just spitballing...
As a millennial I just have to say.... About time we get the pledge back in our lives! Keep it up! 👍
With Liberty And Justice For All Who Can Afford It...
This ain't the place, putz.
You're seriously not making a jig to do this? You're actually just EYEBALLING IT? Pretty fukin crude.
This man is a very good machinist but I want to say this is definitely not the way to sharpen a radius on a cutter.
Are you thinking a concave grinding stone or hone?
A tool and cutter grinder is the weapon of choice for things like this, though not everyone has one...
jak piszczy to zle zaostrzone
Works I guess but not very accurate and you have to use a key with a fillet which will cause it to roll over and cause damage
You really need to move to Seattle Washington. Boeing, Boating ,Air Force, Navy.

Just think about it .
