- In this video, I take a first look at a classic late 80s vintage RC racer, the Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid. In its iconic yellow livery does this racing icon stand up to the test of time or should we leave it in the past?

It is very beautiful, I had one back then. Just hope Kyosho would re-release the Turbo Optima Mid. Brings back lots of great fun memories.
Back when I was still in grade school, I remember a friends dad built him one (86 or 87). I thought that car was so cool, and still do. I'm still a fan of the 80s styling of those cars.
4:36 Crystals! Memories.
One more Kyosho you need to build and run is a re-re Scorpion. Super fun 2wd buggy to run and it just floats over the bumps. And they fly with a simple brushless setup and 2s.
I told you in the video, stop talking me into more Kyosho buggies! ;)
@@RCKickschannel More Kyosho please.
Good luck with yours! Still have my SE which looks much as yours, mine with the vintage Futaba MC12B MC with the mechanical motor controller never installed. Mine is the kit #3136B with the LeMans 240ST.
Great to finally see the Turbo Mid Gavin. There's a few other differences between it and the standard Mid, chassis are different, the Turbo has front universal shafts, adjustable turnbuckles and the wheels are different to the standard Mid wheels (not obvious at first glance). Also, the Turbo Mid never came with a motor or MSC but the standard Mid and Turbo Mid SE both came with the Le Mans 240ST and MSC.
You really should get a Turbo SE to complete the short wheel base set, when funds allow, or just sell off some Tamiya's (I mean, they are only Tamiya's after all). :P
Kyosho and Tamiya are my all time favorite and please do dome other brands as well as this makes your channel more enjoyable to watch.
I’ve got a Traxxas TRX4 and now the 1/8th HyperVS basher.
@@RCKickschannel bring them on as I love to watch different content in your channel and love your channel. 😘😘
Really like the yellow and blue livery
I bought my Turbo mid back in the 80s and will be in the process of restoring it soon. People have mentioned that it did not come with a motor or speed controller, which I do remember. But I also remember that it did come with an under tray, It was a long time ago but I'm sure I never bought any extras when I bought the car.
From what I have found out online the Mids never had under trays but I could 100% be wrong. You can also get an under tray from the Optima cars as well.
I had an original Optima mid se , absolutely regret selling it, one of my favorite RCs of all time! Would buy another if I could!
Me too me 2
I AGREE GREAT VENTAGE LOOK
KYOSHO ARE A WINNING FOR LOOKS I THINK JUST ONE OPPOSITE WALL !TAM WALL,KYOSHO WALL !!!
I GOT A FEELING YOUR GOING TO DO TONS GREAT GREAT WORK RESTORING AND POSSIBLY ANSWERING THE QUESTION, WHICH WALL POPS MORE
I picked up a brand new Kyosho le Mans High Speed motor for next to nothing on a local auction site. Nobody wanted to bid on it. That thing was sooo pretty and ornate that I ended up sticking it into the back of a fully restored Super Hornet shelf queen. I had no Kyoshos at the time.
Nice video. Absolutely thrilled to see this car again. I bought mine new in 1988 but originally there is no motor or speed controller in the box. It was different from the normal mid also in the shock towers that came in carbon in the turbo and aluminium in the regular mid.
oh quick tips when getting the older style driveshafts apart from the tapered hex, First check its not the new type with a steel pin through it and it is the old tapered shank type. Then with the wheel off put the m4 nut back on a few turns on the axle and tap hard once with a small light hammer and the hex / driveshaft should come apart! why use the m4 nut, a)easier to hit with hammer b) no damage to the threads on driveshafts
Hi Gavin, great videos you are making. I have an exact turbo optima mid and it never came with a motor. However the turbo mid se does include a msc and the 240st motor. Thanks for the videos.
2 Awesome Buggies, It's the same here in Australia hard to find and lots of $$$$$ I hope KYOSHO do a ReRelease (fingers crossed) ComeOn KYOSHO PLEASE !!!!!
Exactly gavin scratching like he needs another fix lol good video hopefully I can see another soon
I’m just restoring my old mid turbo. Should be done in a couple of weeks and will be almost mint save a few scratches in obvious areas. Mini Mustang next.
Some vintage beautiful buggies for sure!!! 😊😊
Good vid again!👍 My budget don't stretch to an original kyosho optima so I'm gonna wait until the re-release mid makes an appearance! I've been collecting tamiya/kyosho motors for years and the one thing that stands out a mile with the kyosho motor is it's a lot smoother! Speed they are all much the same (turn for turn) and you tend to get a bit more time out of the kyosho le mans motor again turn for turn probably because it is smoother?
The rabbit hole is real...
Be carefull with the Kyosho bug, the illness is highly addictive!!! But keep it up I enjoyed the show and the vintage Tamiya . I race kyosho , an mostly collect the older rc race buggys. I just aqquired an twenty something year old Ofna nitro .26 that's never been used. But anyways thanks for the videos man I do enjoy while I wrench.
Beautiful buggy
awesome car!
I cant wait for the Re-Re Mid
Same, and I really do hope it’s this year.
It never ends, oh just one more won't hurt. 😀
what made it the turbo version? GRP shock towers, L&R handed turnbuckles and UJ driveshafts up front? Don't remember it coming with a motor in the box.
You ARE buying them all 😄😄😄
Man the wait for the re-release of the Optima mid is killing me. It felt like it was only days away and then covid ruined it
I will always regret selling my Turbo Mid and Mid Custom Special. They are my favourite 2 cars of all time. If they get re-released, I'm so buying them. I see you have the Turbo Mid SE wheels on your mid by the way, lol. I hope that means that by now you have a full Turbo Mid SE to match them, lol?
Very nice, one Kyosho l always though looked great was the Rocky l know it's a more basic model but the body colour and decals mixed with the wheels and tyres picked looks amazing and now very vintage too! any interest in this one Gavin? but don't forget Tamiya 😉
The motor test could be interesting!
looks great gav have you ever had an RC truck with a diff brain? like the arma stuff
No trucks yet on the channel but that will change Stephen.
Fan of any of the 80's - mid 90's rc monster trucks ? like say the tamiya clodbuster (there is a re-release of the clodbuster, some plastic parts are blue & ofc some copyrighted stuff removed vs the original, the usual waffling on re-release kits.)
kyosho usa 1, there was an electric one, there is also the more modern solid axle monster trucks from kyosho, like the twin force, mad force ve, foxx ve & the nitro versions as well.
Mrp high roller (best looking of the vintage ones, its pretty much a giant plastic model with proper rubber tires, that lets it float in the water.
But also most fragile, drivetrain gears was very weak on these.)
a pretty good video of a mint looking mrp high roller.

Speaking of kyosho I'm considering converting my mini-z mr01 & mini-z monster / It actually is an Iwaver 04 which is a clone with a lexan body instead of plastic but they are exactly the same besides the body, and the shocks which the Iwaver 04 has the lowering kit out of the box.
Convering them too 2.4 ghz because both of them are 27 mhz and can't be driven near my apartment complex atm due too some odd signal disturbances happening here in the area for anything i got that's 27 mhz It's strange.
Man! Nice model! I have an ultima pro from the early 90s (perhaps 89 i can't remember) it's also very good condition. Where did you get your tires? Could it ve possible yo get them for the ultma? It's narrow tires front
I had the successor of this....loved it.
Looking forward to getting it all back to mint.
Have you run across a Kyosho Icarus anywhere? My friend had one when we were kids and slammed it into the curb taking out the front end... Don't think he ever fixed it, so he traded it off to another guy we knew. Unfortunately, our friend passed away last October and we don't know what happened to the car...
Turbo had carbon uprights and option house shocks
How do you do it , how can you keep a shelf queen . Dont you get the urge to run it , i couldnt do it . I have a number of RC10 originals A stamped each one of them was restored to be shelf queens but it never played out that way . I had to run them just to see what all my hard work accomplished .
I'm going to show this video to my missus & maybe she'll stop moaning about the 'RC shelf' I have. 'This guys got an entire bloody wall love!'
Hi Gavin, so that’s three of the six optima mids you now have or are on the way. I guessed this might happen one optima series cars always leads to more. I should know the number I have keeps growing even the wife notices now. On the Runner I think one of the front arms is from a turbo optima/ optima pro and the other is a mid/turbo mid arm. I have loads of mid front arm if you need a pair. I also know of a cheat way to put together a rear stabiliser for the turbo. OTW1 kits are very hard to get and cost a bundle. For what they are.
Yep I’ll have some Mid front arms off you if I’m good condition. Love to know about the rear stabiliser 👍🏻
Just dropped you an email with some pics
Kyosho makes a brushless LeMans motors now, when i saw you hold up a Le Mans motor for a brief second in your other Optima video I thought you were going to run one of the old brushed Le Mans super stock motors and the first thing that came to mind was "cool he's going to be driving miss daisy around in his Optima", those old Le Mans super stock motors couldn't push a 2WD Ultima around the track, in the heavy Optima you'd need to time the laps with a calendar, but brushless that should be way better, with the right KV of course....
I have the brushless system from Kyosho. I also have a load of different Kyosho motors.
Is this a re-re? You’re getting my hopes up
I’m always looking for another optima mid, falcon and Schumacher cougar 2...those are my favorites that I need to replace
Nope only vintage Mids at the moment. Could this be the year we see a rerelease from Kyosho, I do hope so.
Some blokes have 400 pairs of sneakers. I wanna be like this chap.
Hang on, I've got all the massive catalogs
You should really include the Lazer series as well (ZX, ZX-R...) So that you have the entire lineage of 80's / 90's / 2000's Kyosho 4wd cars 😉
😉 Just saying 😉
Sure thing, my Patreon account number is 7462863xxx Hehehee
where u get the old brush le mans engines ?
Damm I thought re release I had that car passed down to me dont know where what I did
Gav . "Babe can i buy the whole rabbit hole collection "
Wife. " Yes , as long as you build me the large kitchen extension I want.
Gav. " I have an idea I'll build an extension for my collection. And you can have my old collectors room for all the shoes you have 🤔.
LOL Have you bugged my house!?! 😜
a tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Darian Alejandro Yup, have been watching on flixzone for since november myself =)
@Darian Alejandro Yup, I have been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :)
What about the Kyosho tomahawk and javilen?
Rere Tomahawk is 100% coming to the channel in the next few months. Not a fan of the Javilen.
Hey Gavin, don't know if you are aware, Kyosho made 2 Brushless 240S motors .. one is a 15.5T (seems more recent) and the other is a 19.5T which if i recall was released around the time of the release of the Kyosho scorpion series.

Just curious ! :D
👍
We don't need the BOX! The best part is what's inside👍
What are these things worth - I have one that I'm considering selling...
well i am about to grab one with 30euros if i am lucky
Lol... never sent a link..... well maybe 1 or 2
Heheheh 👍🏻
Nice project, always been a fan of these belt drive Kyosho buggies. Here's my Mid runner, a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/22racd0i5S0/видео.html
