    My papaw always used to say when pruning fruit trees, a bird should be able to fly through the branches. Basically the thinking is if a bird cant fly between them they're too thick and wont have good enough airflow and could break in heavy winds.

    Lots of good tips! Thank you. One I learned from my neighbors is to hang little baggies of Ivory soap in the tree and the deer left my trees alone. I cut a bar into small chunks and use fruit bags like the leftover ones that have oranges in them. It works great! Hope it helps!

    I have a small plum I planted mid Sep 2022. All I did for it so far was to wrap it in burlap when we had below zero temps.
    I will unwrap it and see if she needs a hair cut, put on amazing growth this past year.
    Timely video!
    Stay Well!!!!

    Excellent tutorial. Good diction. Good photography. Makes it easier to understand. Telling us we can decide later is also a good tip. We can learn to observe first, then prune if still needed. Great cold weather advice. Thank you very much for making us much better gardeners and stewards of our plants.

    In the middle of a 3 day snow storm so nice to see bare ground and sun. I have a bunch of trees that will need to be pruned in the spring once I know the worst of the weather is past. Thanks for the tips

    Getting my first fruit trees this spring. 4 in 1 apple and 4 in 1 plum. Hopefully they'll still be around come winter so I can refer back to this video.

    I was just thinking of trimming today-that’s as far as I got😂
    We had to fence the whole area in and I keep the guards on the trunks. I have water sprouts I had seen earlier and will need to get the alcohol out to sterilize between trees. Wonder if we had any damage from the subzero week.
    This crazy heat bubble we are under is worrisome. It’s 47 today through next week plus and rain next week in 50s. May never see any fruit. Accuweather says we will be 3+ degrees warmer this spring. Last spring was hot and advanced growth and frost took care of that. I’m considering shading the fruit.
    Great job, thank you!

    Thanks so much for this video! I learned a lot of great tips to tackle the apple trees I planted last year. Will you be doing another video on pruning your espalier trees? I would love to see a follow up on those. Thanks again!

      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, another espalier video is coming. I had to replace my tree after my last video and it is not caught up to the point that a new video will show the progress.

    I leave a 6 to 8 inch gap at the bottom of the fencing so I can mulch, weed, water & fertilize around the roots. How do you get at the trees to prune them with the netting over the top? The problem with barriers that keep deer out (and barriers are the only thing that works, despite all the old wives tales about soap, hair and old cds), is that the also keep gardeners out! You need a method that is easy to open and close for access.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад

      As you see in the video I open up the fencing and remove the netting to prune and then reapply when done. I use mulch to reduce weeds and don't need any other access to the plants during the year. Lifting the netting for harvest is easy.

    Great timing for this video! I'm planning to tend this week to the 10 fruit trees I planted last spring. Why do I feel so freakin nervous about it?!?😬

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад +1

      It can be nerve-wracking. Take it slow and don't worry too much. We all make mistakes in the beginning but the trees are resilient and can recover in time if that happens.

    I just began pruning a bit. I have a lot of catch up pruning to do, but can't do ot all at once. It's hard for me to prune; I kinda hate it.

    I also have a Contender Peach tree here in New Hampshire. I'd like to start pruning it but am afraid of doing it too early. Sources online seem to be pretty mixed in recommendations. Should I wait until March or could it be too late by then?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад +1

      It is best for shaping the tree to prune when dormant. March is probably not too late but new branches will grow differently after the buds wake up in spring.

    Been wanting to prune but im worried of hurting trees with the nights in the high 20s and low 30s. Im i just being paranoid or should i wait til nights aren't so cold?

      Same here 🤔. Nw high desert Nevada here. I only have a couple & some elderberry that need cutting back. Have read cut to the ground on these … but scared to 🫣🫣👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад

      The tree is dormant and can be pruned. My nights are colder than that. I wait until it's comfortable for me to do it and that is usually past the worst of the winter moths.

    I have a gardening question about trees. I'm in zone 9A (this year). I've got my tangerine trees taking off, my peach trees and cherry trees are loving my 70-40 degree weather now. My lime and grapefruit saplings are struggling, but I think they will make it. My problem is my blood orange tree. Everything says they grow in my zone, but I am fighting to keep it alive. It's getting the same amount of sun and rain as all my other trees and saplings, but it's slowly dying. I've tried wrapping it in plastic and in a blanket- nothing. I've had it in the ground for about 3 months and outside (in the same place as I've planted it) for a total of 9 months. In the summer no problem. Any advice?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 месяца назад

      My guess would be that there may be a problem with the soil in that area. With everything else growing well it would be unusual for that tree to underperform.
