Yes, the concept of spirits went a different path in LoK, than it was in ATLA, but you can find some reasons. Yes, in ATLA spirits were kind of neutral beings, but even there was some hints about evil. In LoK, they went to it more obviously. And for me, it make sense. They bring some western representations of good and evil among the spirits. And about the connection? Look, even Aang was looking for another way to deal with problems, and completely ignored some advices from his previous incarnations. For me, with Korra all the avatar cycle comes full circle, like in the beginings, when Wan and Raava fused for the first time. Maybe it was actually very good - make end to all those traumas and regrets, that passes from one avatar to another thanks to Raavas presence. Every avatar made some mistakes, that made him or her regret him/his decisions, while dying. And if you remember, when Wan fused with Raava, Raava was very weakened, but when Korra fused second time with Raava, Raava was in her full potential, after Vaatu was dissolved.

I remember seeing a thing the creators put out once saying that no amount of intermingling between nations could yield a person that can bend multiple elements, only the avatar can achieve this. We have seen before that studying the techniques different nations use can lead to the development of new skills (Iroh and lightning redirection), and so being raised in a multicultural city by a mixed nation family would 100% mean that he is more likely to bend in a more unique way. Plus look at his personality: He is stubborn in the protection of his friends, but is easily changeable and often influenced by the opinions of others. Changeable and stubborn - in my opinion exactly the unusual combination to describe molten earth.

Even before finding out he was the Avatar, Aang was an airbending prodigy, having earned his tattoos at only 12 years old, including inventing a new technique (the air scooter). 30:35 the fact that platinum is unbendable was introduced in s1! That's how Hiroshi Sato traps Lin, her officers, and Tenzin in his underground factory. I believe it's because when Toph first bent metal, she did it by feeling the little earth particles within the metal, but Platinum is considered "too pure" to detect those particles. Not sure if that holds up to our idea of science but that's how it works in the avatar universe!

    • @charlie6673
      @charlie6673 8 месяцев назад +13

I also think this is partly why Bolin is not able to metalbend! Bolin is a REALLY good earthbender, but he does not "listen" to the earth like Toph does. Toph's earthbending is more inward-focused I feel. While Bolin also has the ability to be precise (e.g. bending a tiny rock at Pli's eye), I don't think he would be able to detect the very, very small particles of earth in metal.

I still feel like the betrayal of the team by hostaging the air nomads elsewhere was out of Zaheer’s character, since until then he had been completely honest and kind to everyone that wasn’t specifically opposing him (Korra and the queen). It felt like the show writers thought they made their villain too rational and help too many people, and had to give him a “kick the puppy” moment so kids didn’t root for him. It’s my biggest gripe with season 3 by far, since he’s otherwise Azula levels of interesting.

I disagree, there's a reason Tenzin was used as bait at the northern air temple: he was the leader who opposed him, so burying the temple along with the Avatar's friends was in character. However, keeping the air nomads captive was insurance against a rescue for Korra. if they tried to get Korra, the air nomads would be destroyed at zaheer's command, but if they got the air nomads, then zaheer would still have time and Korra would be destroyed, they can't have both. Plus, either one destroyed would be a major loss.

Jinora's spirit projection is what got her the tattoos, SP is a nearly Avatar lvl ability; part of the reason why Aang was so strong at his age, especially his A.S., was because as an Air-bender he actively focused on strengthening his spiritual connections, which by proxy would give him a strong connection to Ravaa (even though she didn't exist in Avatar lore at the time). I also think that's why Korra progressed as quickly as she did as well, remnants of Aang sort of bled into her; because remember for the first 16 years it was said that she had virtually no spirituality of her own whatsoever...

really glad you're enjoying Korra so far, especially season 3 so far!!! adding a note about your comment about lavabending around 37:35 apparently earthbenders who are the child of a firebender and an earthbender have to capability to lavabend. which could be a newer thing because the nations always appeared to be quite separated until after the events of ATLA season 3. so people bending different elements being together might've been viewed as "taboo", still could be, but that's just really deep diving. i dont think the explanation of how somebody learns they're a lavabender is ever mentioned in the show...

in general, in order to become a master of air bending, you need to master 36 techniques. In Aang's case, he mastered 35 of them and invented the air scooter, making 36 in total. Really shows how gifted he was in his native element, not even considering he's an avatar

It's a legitimate problem with old people that they sometimes won't leave houses when they are about to burn down. The fear of needing to rebuild in old age, and the attachment to objects of your past for your identity, somehow it results in a common psychological impulse to just let it happen. My neighbour nearly lost his house to a wildfire. He locked himself in the garage with his rottweilers around him and a shotgun draped over his lap. Not sure if he wanted to be surrounded by his identity or if it was a threat against anyone who would try to save him. His house ended up being narrowly missed.

Yes I always liked the idea that the end of the hundred year war where nations started interacting again, especially in republic city, would have blood likes crossing and hence subbending. Dont know what combos created combustion bending, if any. We know metal was offshoot w no mixing as with bloodbending.
But maybe the next series will elaborate on that angle since technology has evened the playing field. Thus bending will adjust as well. Back and forth thru the eons

@@dooda9566 I don't think the theory that Bolins Firenation history plays into it necessarily has to be physiological, but rather a more cultural/psychological aptitude. The Avatar or Irohs Lightning-Redirection are both practical examples of how you can be more attuned to something because you can get into the right headspace. Bolin doesn't have to be physically attuned to bending Lava, but he's got both firenation cultural heritage and his closest emotional bond is a firebender. Metal he doesn't understand, Fire is something he's grown up with, the same way Korra didn't understand Air and proved very nicely that the Avatars "opposite element" isn't necessarily the element-counter to their natural one.
EDIT: Third example: Zafou has a lot of metal benders, when we hear all the time it's actually rare for earth benders to pick it up; but unlike other earth benders the kids born and raised in Zafou are raised in a metal bending culture. It's not physical.

39:46 I AGREE!! Avatar does this really well. You would think that getting rid of Pli would increase their chances of beating Zaheer, but they inadvertently "strengthen" him in a different way. If no one managed to beat anyone from the Red Lotus, the audience would feel like no progress is being made, so this is a good way to achieve a feeling of progress while maintaining a hard-to-beat villain. It's sort of similar in ATLA when they manage to find out about the eclipse. Randomly finding out about your enemy's greatest weakness could make a story worse - it can feel unearned or sort of like "main character syndrome." But in this case, finding out about the eclipse actually makes their lives so much harder. Appa is taken away, they have to go to Ba Sing Se where Aang almost dies, the day of black sun is not even a success. It's brilliant!

  • @travisgames2

Well.. For an Air Bender to become a Master, they need to master all 36 Air Bending techniques.
However, the loophole is, an Air Bender can master 35 techniques and if they create their own they can get their tattoos. Aang mastered 35 techniques, then created the air scooter to get his tattoos. Unfortunately, since he didn't Master the 36th traditional technique, that technique is technically lost.

I don’t think that Zaheer was trying to kill Korra just because she differed from his beliefs. I rather believe that this was always the Red Lotus’s intention in the end. With the spirits free once Korra dies Raava would return to the Spirit World and battle Vatuu just as she had when Wan met her. The cycle would continue and leave the world to its own affairs without the avatar interfering or establishing any form of order. This would allow their anarchist ideal to grow and prosper as every nation would face the threat of revolution without the avatar to keep the status quo and balance.

This is just my theory, but I don't think "detaching yourself from the world" means stopping to care or not having any goals in the real world. End of 2nd season original Avatar, Aang let go of his attachment to Katara (when he was closed int he crystals). He successfully did that, and thus gained access to the avatar state (and as we see later in life, he still uses it). He didn't stop caring about people, the world or Katara after that though. I think it just has to do with distance and self-distance.

The reason 99.9% of airbenders can't fly is because they have earthly tethers. The one thing Zaheer cared about most was P'li. When she died, he had no one left to care for; his earthly tether had been severed. The reason no one after Guru Laghima had flown until Zaheer is because their earthly tether often lives as long as they do: their Bison. Airbenders don't fly because they love their Bison.

    • @thecocoacouch

Yeah but this rule is essentially restricting the “earthly tether” to being the love you have for someone. I thought it was far more broad like you had to have NO attachments, whether it is a religion, material things, a passion etc. I just find it strange that it’s seen as some mystical all powerful thing (Tenzin admires the ability) when it really seems so easy if non of them had Bison.
