      it is primitive that was how the Romans DID it. as a matter of fact, even today there are still some roads in NYC that still look like that, that are maybe hundreds years old.

    • @montanus777
      @montanus777 6 лет назад +91

      depends. it's probably way more comfortable in the evening after the the stones stored all the heat from the sun during the day. and during rainy days it's also better to not have to walk through mud.

    • @HadzirLP
      @HadzirLP 6 лет назад +91

      Roman roads are quite the engineering accomplishment and were a lot more complex than river stones in dirt. Cobblestone is a completely acceptable way to pave roads. But its not done in this matter.
      This surface is very coarse and rocky, whereas real cobblestone roads are a lot smoother. Also they are built on a surface of gravel and sand. But this is just rocks in dirt and will turn muddy in rain.

      In tropical area, we only use shoes for formal or spesific event, because it's uncomfortable using shoes in hot whether. We usually use sandals and barefoot in the house so our feet is way stronger than westerner sensitive feet, so stop whining about that road, it's not for your weak feet. In countryside most of them who used to walk barefoot around have thick feet skin, that they dont even feel thorn anymore. And step on unflat surface is good for your blood stream and health.

      I have a large pond in my yard with Koi and goldfish, they occasionally do that gasping thing at the surface when trying to eat floating bugs and other stuff on the surface. And they also do that when they’re hungry and wanting to be fed, so the fish may have just seen their owner and assumed they were being fed so they did that gulping at the surface thing. But that water does look stagnant and definitely needs a source of aeration so theres oxygen for the fish.

    To address all of the concerns regarding the stone pathway.
    1) Walking barefoot on stones is one of the most comfortable and therapeutic experiences you can have.
    2) Watch is longer videos titled "next 3 months in forest" and you'll clearly see it rains a lot and his area becomes very muddy and filled with puddles. No one wants to walk in that.
    3) He used soil and lighter material underneath the stones to allow the stones to settle in over time and even out. The rain will even out the stone pathway.
    4) Some of you should really humble yourselves with your know it all attitude. PL has demonstrated his knowledge of the terrain and local building materials through his work. The hubris of many of you with your assumptions.

    This was pretty dumb.. you can't just lay whatever stone you find. The whole purpose of the road is to lay a flat and sturdy surface with grip. These stones are anything but flat

    • @piaspermacultureedu9460
      @piaspermacultureedu9460 6 лет назад +20

      You are applying your world view in a situation that does not warrant your rules of laying rock. As a landscaper in the US I've made several rockscapes and there is nothing wrong with the way he built this path.

    • @Adamantiis
      @Adamantiis 6 лет назад +27

      The way he laid them is only acceptable in stone walls. If you're laying a walkway with these stones without even finding a flat surface on them you're basically saying fuck functionality.. the whole point of the stone road. It is easier and less painful to just walk on the flat ground.

    • @davetaioneshu5226
      @davetaioneshu5226 6 лет назад +8

      would you pick fault in a rice strainer for having holes? he laid it this way because he wanted to. not everyone needs 100% functionality. maybe he wanted it to be rustic and PRIMETIVE. just enjoy what you watch and pick faults in your own decisions not someone elses.

      I highly doubt it. If he walks bare footed a lot. I'm pretty sure his feet are like the bottom of boots by now. Soft feet is usually for people who tend to use foot wear. You can see he doesn't. His feet are probably like the bottom of a dogs or cats paw.

      @Zamolxes77 5 лет назад

      You can make a camera obscura from stone, sticks and mud. But for the film, you need silver nitrate, so you have to locate silver ore, extract it and as that is not enough, you have to make nitric acid, which ain't easy.

      UmmNotQuiteSureToPut It’s primitive compared to today. He did make a basic fish pond, after all. Few villages way back in time had much like this sort of thing, but when you’re working with cement and concrete it’s only reasonable to make something to walk on.

    • @UmmNotQuiteSureToPut
      @UmmNotQuiteSureToPut 6 лет назад

      So what you said is the primitive people didn't do what he's doing? Oh wait, is it because when you're not actually primitive, your just playing and doing landscaping projects.

    Hate to be so critical but this video just has a lot of bad things about it
    1) the fish are suffocating, that's why they are gasping for air at the surface. You need to make some sort of water wheel for circulation. Taking more water out of the pond at the end didn't help either, less volume to dissolve oxygen into
    2) you defeated the whole purpose of a stone road by not ensuring they were all flat against the ground, having so many points up at angles will just be painful to walk on. It also probably would have looked better to sink the road into the ground so it would be flush with the rest of the soil, rather than raised above it.
    3) Did you really just drink water straight from the pond? I know you probably have a stronger immune system than most of us, but still, that is so dangerous!
    4) Based on 1 and 3, it looks like you could *really* use a well to supply you with water at your camp, rather than having to haul it bucket by bucket from the stream. You don't need to build fancy, dysfunctional stone roads and torturous fish ponds right now. Build something useful.
    Having said all that, I do really support your channel and want you to succeed, just hope you take some of this advice!!

    • @kasper6188
      @kasper6188 6 лет назад +5

      1 the fish are prob fine they look like tilapias and they are practically immortal and no the volume doesn't affect the amount of oxygen dissolved into it the surface area do which didn't change much at all
      2 your feet get as tough as shoe soles after a long time of walking barefoot so it's more likely for drainage and maybe for when it rains cause walking through mud is exhausting
      3 I doubt he drank it from the pond it's more likely that he took it from his concrete filter thing then sat by the pond and drank the water
      4 fair point but building a well might be really fkn hard and i don't think he's to far away from the river

    • @CommanderJoir
      @CommanderJoir 6 лет назад

      what kasper here said but want to add. For a "single household" use, its not a bad road he build. He raised it so the rainwater from the surrounding ground wont sweep over the road but it will run between that little gap he maid. he even put some concrete/cement in that gap for the purpose to prevent to much of erosion. The stone laid "standing" will make the stone to "sink" into the ground. Just laying stone flate to the ground can make the stone to move more sideways. And because hes but one dude, putting it "standing" will be more of an "easy" way to let the stone to "settle down" overtime to later add a second layer of stones or something else, if needed.
      If he wanted to make a road for taking heavy load like wagons and/or a lot of traffic, the roman way is more preferred method (a metod modern day roads are based on).
      Fun fact: The Roman Road
      The Romans laid a layer of stone big as fists, on packed earth. A second layer contained rubble, concrete, "broken stones"/stones and lime. A third layer was made by kernel, a bedding of fine cement. And then the final layer of fine stone blocks that was cut/carved in a way to let water run to the sides. And the road usually contained raised pavement (sidewalk) and edge stones. The road could been build directly on the ground or in a man made ditch. This is/was very time consuming way to build roads, especially if its only done by one worker, but it will survive for a long time for sure.
      Edit: And wanted to add that what i said depends on the sizes of the stone and the force of the pressure they will encounter etc etc. And those stones seems to be big enough and close enough to other stones that having a couple that standing doesn't matter much to the bare feet/foot. Walking around on the bare ground will do more damage if walking on some standing stones than on a stone path/road with a couple of stones that stands rather then laying down.

    I have a suggestion for the fish pond. Try making a "primitive" water pump using a Bell Siphon filter design. Theoretically you should be able to make a self powered water fountain. But it's not something I have seen or tried.
