I'm old enough to remember what Hackney was like in the 1970's and the late 1960's, so some of these photos certainly bring back memories for me, I guess it's tempting to say that things were much better back then and I would say so too but to be fair, it might not be as simple as that, it's easy to compare photos or videos from the past with real life today, because sometimes we can have very selective memories and photos and videos don't always tell the whole story, you need to be there live to see the whole picture.
Yes, it was great back in those days but there were problems even back then, whilst there were some nice people, there were plenty of not so nice people too, it was always rough, having said that, it certainly does seem a lot worse to me now, as someone who was there back then I can say that confidently, it's almost as if people have given up and don't care about anything and it's not just Hackney, it's all over the country nowadays.
People, especially blokes nowadays appear to have less pride in themselves and just want to deliberately look rough, unshaven etc, that seems to be the new thing nowadays with the younger generation and even some of the older ones like me and older than me are getting into this new 'just got out of bed" look and the streets are not cleaned up as much as they used to be.
Loads of strange things are tolerated today that back in those days, there would have been an outcry over, it does puzzle me sometimes how this has been allowed to develop over the years without someone saying "hey, what are we doing here?" and in this day and age there is no excuse for any of it, we've got the kind of technology that back in those days people could only dream of but they were doing better in terms of looking after themselves and their community, so something is wrong, we should be doing much better than they did today in that sense.
I am wondering where it's all going in 2018 soon to be 2019, I think we need to bring back that sense of pride and dignity in the community, it's not necessary to buy a £500 suit or anything like that, I'm not saying that but it would cost nothing for people just to make a bit of effort, shave, smarten up a bit and look like they care, keep the streets clean and tidy, it would make such a difference to the atmosphere instead of letting it turn into a pigstye, come on, people of today, we can do much better than this, seriously, looking back at some of these pictures and how I remember it, it is embarrassing when I look at how it is today, thanks.

Born and in Hackney, near Hackney Marshes. Know Victoria Park, Homerton, Mare Street, Graham Road, and Kingsland Road all the way to the City very well indeed. Moved away in 1971 when I got married, so probably would not recognize very much these days.
