And they thought it’d be safe to do a thing between the princess and most relatable male character, so Lance. I think they had a plan and then diviated from it due to shippers and the shortened seasons like you said.

Considering the other issues in the story, I don't think it would have. Plus, they rushed Allurance and Shiro's wedding, it would've been also bad ngl. I think Plance needed proper development since in the later seasons, they don't really interact that long or have any deeper dialogue besides humor. The deeper development was usually separate.

i survived voltron by shipping characters who met once for about 15 seconds and then never again, it's the best. there's no such thing as an interaction being out of character bc the show never showed us what those characters interacting would canonically look like lol.

While watching Voltron: LD, I seriously shipped Plance so much. It was the single ship in Voltron:LD that I thought made the most sense realistically. But Netflix had to go and deny DreamWorks more seasons so Season 8 was just a hot mess because they tried to end VLD way before it was supposed to.
We already know that the final season had a lot of last minute (as last minute as you can in regards to animation) rewrites and changes, so considering all the "hints" and build up (and Pidge visibly being upset) with even the cast dropping hints, it really does feel like the original plan was to have Plance be endgame, but for whatever reason they decided to force Allurance at the last minute and add in a bunch of stuff that made the whole last few episodes feel both over inflated and really empty.
I’m someone who never believed the Plance endgame thing prior to 2018, and I still don’t believe there’s any evidence it was set in stone to happen. Lance’s feelings for Allura had already been developing further, so random interactions with Pidge that had no plot-tying depth or explicit romantic tone didn’t really mean much. I still remember how most of their development/theories set by the fans was: blushing (which doesn’t automatically mean romance as Lance has blushed at Coran and Keith), Pidge being annoyed with Lance which was actually in regards to disliking his ego since the Garrison which is even on the Wiki, horoscopes, and one off moments that are platonic since Pidge, Hunk, and Lance were all friends since Garrison. I definitely believe other ships were meant to happen in S1-S2 such as Kallura, not just because it was from the 80’s series but also has deleted scenes that felt more romantically implied. Plance doesn’t seem to have that, unless there’s any deleted scenes or official confirmation it was never planned to be canon is what I think. It’s fine t9 ship, but I think people put their expectations pretty high when they were hardly interacting or when Pidge was spending majority of last seasons with Hunk instead.
I miss Voltron but I look back on it and I'm happy it's over ,I think plance should have been end game, allurance had good build up but Lance ending up with some one who understands him loves their family and earth like him add up more allura could have been with anyone else ,Keith could have dated hunk or rommel ,instill see vld fans act toxic even now it said it's been years why are they still fighting XD
