  • Join me in this series as I test the humble Mirror Dinghy's capability with Sail, Motor and Oar.
This Episode I put her through her paces with a 3hp 2 stroke outboard motor.

How fast did you get with full throttle?

I’m not actually sure. I meant to test this with my phone GPS. Will do so next time I take the motor out, and post it.

You need one of those hydrofoil things on your motor. You need something to help get it on plane.

I wondered about this, whether some flaps at the bottom of the hull or something.
I’m also wondering if lowering a tad may give it more water and less air.
I’m not convinced it’s not planing, but the hull is just not shaped right to do it well.
      anyone else have experience here?

Have you ever mounted the outboard to one side to use whilst sailing?

I haven’t! however that it’s in my plans. I would like to see what adventures i can have in the little boat.
including mounting the outboard to the side, putting reefing points in the mainsail, adding some extra cargo space and weather protection, etc. and trying to share the journey here.
      have you done this yourself?

@@chasingwind114 sounds good! No I haven’t but I’ve just purchased my first mirror, picking her up Thursday! Where I plan to use her is along the river then out into the harbour so I need to explore options of having her rigged whilst also having the back up of the outboard at the same time!

@@harrypitman919 Oh awesome! All the best with your new boat!
There’s a bloke with some videos of his boat Curlew, search ‘mirror cruising’ who has that setup. I’ve been meaning to see if I can.see how he has it set up. Might be worth a look.

      @@chewitt6426 Thanks for the feedback!
I would love to know what in particular you didn’t like (was it the shaky head cam? or composition?)
For context, I have consciously chosen to spend my limited time and money enjoying my adventures as a rare chance to unwind. This means that filming comes second. I did this video largely with head cam for practicality, but it was shakier than I’d like and I will use sparingly in future.
