I have never seen such an informative documentary on meat processing in the sixties. A factory without robots or digital computers is truly impressive.
_Why are there so many dislikes on this video?_
Stupid youth who don't realize what it takes to actually make food.
@josephgaviota I'm more curious about what they do with the hide now. Mainly, everything is faux leather unless it's expensive, I guess. Gone are the days of everyday things being for everyday people.

@@josephgaviota They don't even realize that this will feed millions if not billions around the world, which can be life and death for many people. Unlike their stupid vegan program.
Ok I dislike your comment 🙄
I love how he says “once again, automation” when now it’s like 90% of the entire process
It's really cool to see how similar the machines are even though computer chips were far less involved, must require some incredible mechanical timing loops.
👍🥳
I live by a slaughterhouse for cattle, I used to work there. My job was to literally manhandle slabs of meat, weighing in at about 50 pounds each, and hook them up to a conveyer. That's what I did all day for a good 3 months. It wasn't the highest paying job I ever had, but it was the best job I ever had.
I spent $200 buying meat for that year in one day. A single purchase and I was staked with delicious meat. I had so much meat I had to buy a bigger freezer. I eventually grew tired of the taste and gave most of it away. Now I'm on a diet lol.
My point is, slaughterhouse's aren't so bad. Working there was a great experience. It helped me better understand where my food was coming from. Unlike most jobs, this one required you to be physically and mentally strong. Killing another living thing is not easy.
Thanks for your insight, mate...😊
@@Another-Address did you get nightmares from what you saw?
Now computers and robotics have replaced the workforce almost entirely.
Yes .
Thank you for that information .
Now you over there may interest me , and l may interest you .
No animal life or human life lives very long .
Some are killed , some die naturally in old aged process .
My particular interest in the problem of actually dying ,
PLEASANTLY ? is what l now write about here .
On Australian TV , I saw a killing cattle process , as used in Texas .
I was happy to see that it was MUCH better than simple rudimentary killing techniques .
As used by billions of humans against animals ?
So , l set about to design a simple , but better , and cheap , machine that could be used by billions of people , NOT killing animals , in and Via an expensive Abattoire & meat processing Factory .
And believe that l have some good ideas seen in my designs of those simple machines .
Now who to talk to about it ? Without the usual problems often associated with new inventions AND their Developement .
Australia is a manufacturing Country , but so are most other nations also .
And simple things are often best done in simple ways & cheaply of course .
Many a project has died because of bad management AND Costs .
So what ?
So , the U . S . A . is on the List for it , but may not be the best choice to start with or continue with .
You may have some ideas about animal processing and meat consumption .
I personally think that hugely greater food production is possible in all categories AND ESPECIALLY in the production of food Substitution .
Such as non meat foods for Vegetarians AND particularly in alternatives for things such as Milk .
Anyway .
Many starts have been made in those things mentioned , including my ideas for a better technique and machine .
You , no doubt have ideas also .
Thanks .
Your response is welcome here in West Australia , Perth .
Adios ,
for now .

Thank you for producing such an informative video about the food industry. I was a USDA inspector of meat plants for 20 years. I was always impressed with how the products were made. It is interesting to see the changes for good that were implemented since you made this video more safety equipment is one. Keep up the good work!
American logistics and innovation are 2nd to none. That's what kills me. My entire generation didn't get that because everything was shipped over seas by the time we were old enough to understand.
Got damn those knives they use are sharp af..
+Noah D
Thinking the same, wonder how many people found that out :/
Savage Nature
It is rather expensive to get a good sharp knife,
+Noah D Which makes this a very dangerous job, any mistake with those knives and you are gonna cut off a part of your body.
+Rasta A sharp knife is much safer than a dull one! ;)
+Savage Nature A very unintelligent Analogy. If (I'm sure which you do.) you have a brain, you can clearly see I am speaking about the degree of the sharpness of the blade. Of course a blade will have a Edge. It is a blade...
This is amazing quality for a video recorded in the 50's
I mean, mainly what's impressive for me is the color. Most TV shows didn't switch over to color until some time in the 60s, but the image quality is pretty similar to Hogan's Heros. (For anyone wondering, you can find Hogan's Heros on your local MeTV, which I would highly recomend, great show on a great classic TV channel.)
Shot on film in 64. Film has a high resolution.
Well, it was shot on film, so...
That means it was not "recorded", and the film was later used to make a video out of it. And that film is still intact somewhere for posterity.
As a lifelong cutlery and personal weaponry enthusiast, I can say...wow, those are some seriously sharp knives. lol It's also nice to see a vid with tasteful 'cocktail music' in the background...calming...
I used to work at a meat market. Those knives were professionally sharpened every week. And the butchers were continually using sharpening steels to keep the edge on. I can testify to how sharp those knives were, since i had to wash them.
If you weren't very careful, you'd cut yourself, and not notice till you put your hands back in the soapy water. Most cuts i got back then didn't even bleed, they were that clean. And don't get me started on the meat slicer. That thing would cut air.
Buy a decent blade and a good steel.
Learn to hone a knife and use a ceramic steel ;)
Boy how I love these old documentaries! The iconic narrator tone and beautiful music score!

Andromediens yeah there still is dumb fuck go back to school
i like how every process is gore but the background music is all happy and there are children watching pigs being slaughtered
You crack me up! Wooohooooooo!
Muslims aren't vegans but they don't eat pork so 1. Billion humans plus vegans don't eat pork we don't even use any product with prork like gelatin and medicine and other things 😊 but we don't eat pork not only for religious reasons but for scientific reasons to some pork or pigs have a Bactria that can kill in some cases but there's more facts
+ipadgirl72 Well cows and sheep can contain prions and may cause what's known as "mad cow disease". Chicken can give salmonella among other things.
Your scientific reason is pretty invalid (in the modern era) but I support your culture and understand that you do not eat pork.
ipadgirl72 Prions are not bacteria, they can only be killed at temperatures that are so high it will make the meat inedible. There is no cure. Once you are infected with it you will die a slow and painful dead, slowly losing your memory while the prions destroy your brain.
The parasites you can get from pigs are killed when the meat is properly cooked and even if you get infected it can be cured in less then a week with a couple pills.
Doing stuff for religious reasons is fine with me as long as you realize that it is just that. With modern medicine there is no medical reason not to eat pork.
That said I am not attacking your religion, no one gets hurt by what you eat so its your own choice.
+Potteto Chip When i have kids and they're of a decent age they're going to watch me slaughter and butcher an animal in front of them after that, they will get their choice on what they want to eat. Gotta learn some day...

+Scott M (Chilliedog2918) It is true that a lot of these machines were more complicated then. You may have noticed that there were no robots or digital computers, but instead people, analog computers, and mechanical machines working on the production line.

Why so many dislikes?
I don't see what's so offensive or disgusting. If anything it's a testament to how genius humans are, being able to create dozens of different products from a single animal, and making the most out of nature
Where is the intelligence in that? How is it genius to literally KILL an animal and eat it's corpse?
+TabathaaCP How is it intelligent to rip a plant out of the ground and grind it up into different products? Oh, wait, it doesn't have a voice so it doesn't feel anything.
+TabathaaCP How's it not?
BoboDoboRobo it's not disgusting, it's how cruel humans can be just because our brain power is superior to other creatures.
Sindy Batista -
Go preach to God, evolution, etc, etc, that made humans omnivores. Something tells me you are like most consumers and buy products by the boatload made via human abuses like sweatshops and slavery yet have the nerve to question nature and biology regarding food. Humans are by far the most humane predators in the world.
