Mark Mason I suggest you read about orange juice production. The way the juice is pasteurized boils out both the flavor and denatures (like when you cook) a lot of the healthy stuff in the juice. The resulting liquid is so nasty and bland they add artificial orange flavors and a ton of sugar.

The best orange juice is hand-squeezed from fruit you picked yourself from a carefully maintained orange tree. Industrial-scale simply can't beat the flavor. Also, the pulp in hand-squeezed orange juice is a vastly different texture from the pulp you get from the industrial, grocery store orange juice. If you've only ever had commercially produced orange juice, then you've never had orange juice.
@John Smith I know and yes is true... you're totally right. And with the oranges prices increasing per week ...is getting worse . 50 cents one year ago, 58 cnts 6 months ago and now they're 80 cents each one. TX price but I guess the inflation is not an exclusive TX phenomenon
@@angelvaldivia86 Inflation is the expansion of the money supply and credit by the US government and the Federal Reserve. This means that prices aren't increasing. Its the value of the dollar that is decreasing. If you measure prices by using gold instead of dollars, prices have been decreasing. This includes rent, utilities, gasoline, houses, apartments, cars, tuition, etc. If you use dollars, prices are increasing. So all holders and users of the US dollar experience rising prices. So, it isn't specific to Texas nor is it a phenomenon. The dollar used to be backed by gold, but unfortunately that ended in 1971.
"The fruit so popular they named a color after it" - Amazingly, that's actually the way it went. Most languages who have/had no name for it, just call it yellow-red or something like that (for instance, in Japanese it's just "orenji" because they had no specific word before it was imported). The way a person sees colors and is able to differentiate between them is very much influenced by the words we use for them and the contexts in which they are useful, kind of like a color interpretation primer. Just think of the fact that brown is basically just a dark orange (at least scientifically, even down to how our cone cells react to them). But there is no actual context where this knowlegde is useful, because there are so many more shades of brown that are meaningful to us in real life, that the glaring orange is just something completely different and that's how we see and interpret it.

Why do people consider Orange Juice a breakfast drink? I drink it at any time of day and it's great! Still, I have heard so many people consider it a breakfast drink. Even my own brother considers it a breakfast drink. The narrator says it here too.
I think it may be because of the fact that people associate orange juice for its fresh, crisp taste, texture, and its health benefits. All of which, when combined within the first hour or two after waking up, boost your immune system...As an added bonus, orange juice tends to go well with breakfast meals or drinks (i.e, pancakes, waffles, bacon and eggs, even coffee, etc.).
That was the way it was advertised in the 1950s up to get it popular. With more people skipping breakfast now, OJ is seeing less consumption. It is being advertised less like a breakfast drink, but its hard to shake off a stereotype that has existed for more than 50 years.
Well, this show was not How It's Made, so right away what you wanted to see wasn't going to be what you got. It's from a different show that does things differently.
What they're not telling you is the part of the process that sees the OJ heated to extreme heat to pasteurize it, which destroys a third of the vitamin C content. Nor does it differentiate between OJ from concentrate and not from concentrate. Nor does it tell you that pasteurizations kills the natural flavour of the juice and so manufacturers have to add a "flavour pack" to the juice as a final step before putting it in containers for sale. And the contents of that "flavour pack", by the way, is not required by the FDA to be detailed in the ingredients on the packaging. Oh, and they also don't tell you that those containers are often sterilized with hydrogen peroxide. OJ is a highly processed food when bought from these companies. In anycase, don't drink your calories - it isn't good for you and will make you FAT. You're far better off squeezing half a lemon in to a big glass of water and adding a tbsp of apple cider vinegar. Or eat and orange. Don;t be so bloody lazy sugar-dependent - it's a form of control that people need to avoid.
Albert Head , nice job man! You are so right. They also take all of the oxygen out of the orange juice which causes it to loose it orange color and turn brownish.
Only reason why I scrolled down was to say what about the flavor and vitamin killing pasteurization part... thank you for doing much better job than I could
Gotabigego17 Oh that's right! I'm sure these massive companies would tell us the cons about their product on a public scale. Because they didn't, must mean that there are none. Makes complete sense to me.
Schmuck If they did not and was from con then just sue them if your certain of your claim, it's false advertising otherwise. useless your talking out your ass tho.
Didn't knew there was a machine that can harvest oranges. When i worked at an orange farm we do it manually which takes about 10-20 minutes for 5 persons to finish 1 tree.
Maybe your orange farm does not sell much oranges to orange juice factories. If the farm mostly sells on the market, machines might be damaging to the fruit's appearance. Juice factory on the other hand shouldn't care much about orange appearance.
I work in japan and the orange we harvest either gets packed into super markets or turned into orange juice, So I don't think it doesn't sell much but it's more of a family business rather than a corporate one so I guess machines are really not needed, Also we harvest most of them in high slopes so I guess only a person can harvest them.

"A load of the carefully screened pulp is added back into the juice to create the wholesome, authentic O.J. with all the good stuff still in it." I think it's clear where the narrator's juice loyalties lie
What he said is true though. While both versions of orange juice are unhealthy (as all juices are,) the version with pulp is objectively healthier since it has increased fiber, which helps mitigate the issue that makes juice unhealthy in the first place (too much sugar, not enough fiber.)
They left out the part where they store the oj in huge metal containers. Leave em for a year until the juice comes out flavourless, at which point artificial flavour is added. Which part of the video was that in?
In the UK there’s ‘Freshly squeezed OJ’ (smooth or with bits), then there’s ‘Freshly squeezed pasteurized OJ’, and ‘OJ made from concentrate’, and then there’s the stuff in cartons. In decreasing order of taste & quality (and decreasing clarity - towards diluted paste). The stuff in the video is the lowest quality?
The people that keep crying about pasteurization are the first to sue a company when they get sick from a product. The pasteurization process has vastly reduced mass poisoning and deaths of bacteria tanted food since it was mandated by FDA/USDA. If you dont like it go make your own food and quit complaining. I will keep buying my from the store. Thanks for the great video. Thanks for supplying me with orange juice. Thanks for all the jobs you provide.
yeah, this is not how orange juice is made. they forgot to tell you the juice is stored for a year and the oxygen removed leaving the juice tasting like sugar water. Flavor then needs to be added back in via flavor packs that our essentially perfumes made by the very companies that make your cologne. During the pasteurizing process, the vitamin C is killed off and so this will need to be added back in as well via animal bone powder. Yum! this is why many orange juices are not vegetarian. If you think I'm making this up, Google it.
+Harry Truncate So an orange with a candy cane stripped straw in it isn't to give the impression that it is fresh? hmmmmm. I wonder what that means then? Maybe a straw in a 10,000 gallon vat after a boil to kill all germs and the last bit of air sucked out killing every last nutrients and flavor wasn't as appealing in the focus groups.
+Harry Truncate don't underestimate the gullibility of the common public. Just because you are smart enough to understand doesn't mean the mass public does. in fact many are surprised to hear that orange juice, the way it is produced, is not healthy for you.
Lisa Smith ... They don't add sugar, but they do add orange oil from the peels, and perfumes made from oranges to bring back flavor to the juice that is lost during pasteurization. "Fresh" squeezed may be squeezed right after picking, but the juice sits in large stainless vats for up to 6 months before you get it. The entire process is misleading.
How about the parts where they boil it to death where it no longer resembles anything like orange juice, then add a bunch of chemicals to make it look, taste and smell like orange juice again? Do yourself a favour. Squeeze your own.
In a past life I used to deliver freight to Tropicana's plant in Ft. Pierce. They do not waste anything in the Orange business. The peels are turned into fertilizer or sold to local ranchers for cow feed. Cow's love orange peel!

I love great orange juice and always always prefer fresh squeezing it myself. But....Living in Canada means that finding good juice oranges is quite challenging and very expensive. I understand that the juice I get in the cartons is not the same as my favorite, but it is still really good and much better generally then frozen or cartons made from concentrate. I will continue to buy it. BTW among the popular brands I prefer the Florida Natural over the Tropicana and I prefer Tropicana over Minute Maid. One of my favorite treats is fresh orange juice when I am in Florida.
Thanks for the insightful story Mr Aubrey, I also find it hard to find good orange juice over here in Vietnam. Hope you're doing 'swell. Contrary to your opinion, I feel the Florida Natural is Dogshit and believe me, I know what dogshit tastes like (hehehehehehe) I was a brave kid. 😜
Well I ended up here by surprise. But it was good. Thanks for a good, brief report. Other things worth mentioning in this variety of report: •There are two broad varieties of oranges -- for juicing and for eating. The eating variety is best grown in my State -- California. •Remember Bing Crosby the singer and actor? It was he who backed the lad who came up with the idea for frozen, reconstitutable orange juice. So if you make your OJ from frozen, at home, thank Bing. •This story was about American locations and products. If you must use metric language it would be appropriate to use Imperial measurements as well. We millions who exercised our right to reject metric would appreciate it. •I am an arborist. If you have just a few orange trees at home, here is what I would suggest to you, if you call me to prune your fruit trees. Because a tree only has X amount of growth and development energy, per season. This means that if your fruit tree is pruned to produce LESS fruit, then each item of fruit will get more attention for development. Rather than the energy being divided among more fruit items. So, less is more. Thin the fruit on your tree when you see how much it is going to bear. The remaining fruit will be of higher quality, because it got more attention.

Welcome to Food Inc.
How's about the "from concentrate" part. Didn't explain that.
cuz its not from fucking concentrate. if it was they wouldve shown or said that. yall get on my nerves lol
Most of the things that you eat daily have been machine picked and put in a package saying "hand picked".
Didn't know.......
Need more of these nowadays...the og informational

"A load of the carefully screened pulp is added back into the juice to create the wholesome, authentic O.J. with all the good stuff still in it."
I think it's clear where the narrator's juice loyalties lie
I thought that too haha. I like both kinds of orange juice.
What he said is true though. While both versions of orange juice are unhealthy (as all juices are,) the version with pulp is objectively healthier since it has increased fiber, which helps mitigate the issue that makes juice unhealthy in the first place (too much sugar, not enough fiber.)
What a very very interesting video! Thanks!
South Africa represented too! Mr Visser we salute you!
Why did the blonde stare at the OJ carton?
Because it said 'concentrate'
Music Is Life Life Is Music *claps slowly*
They left out the part where they store the oj in huge metal containers. Leave em for a year until the juice comes out flavourless, at which point artificial flavour is added. Which part of the video was that in?
they censured that
You can read the OJ label and it will say from concentrate or not from concentrate. The brand they show here is not from concentrate.
The stuff in the video is the lowest quality?
while I was drank orange juice and I wondered how its made. I am here now. thanks farmers for growing good oranges.

Shout out to Lake Wales, Florida my home town! I literally live like 6 or 7 minutes from the Florida's Natural plant!

+Harry Truncate the problem is they advertise it as fresh squeezed.
They forgot the part where they deoxygenate the juice and add a crap ton of sugar.
The Puncakian it might be "no added sugar"
They don't add sugar, the only sugar it has is the natural sugars from the juice.
The Puncakian read the label 100% pure orange juice
Lisa Smith ... They don't add sugar, but they do add orange oil from the peels, and perfumes made from oranges to bring back flavor to the juice that is lost during pasteurization. "Fresh" squeezed may be squeezed right after picking, but the juice sits in large stainless vats for up to 6 months before you get it. The entire process is misleading.
Spurious Effect
I wish I had the canopy shaker tractor when I'm driving

Emeny Skylove You forgot the part where Oranges aren't the only things being slaughtered.
IOWNA11 All those poor delicious insects.
Emeny Skylove They actually included that part.
How about the parts where they boil it to death where it no longer resembles anything like orange juice, then add a bunch of chemicals to make it look, taste and smell like orange juice again? Do yourself a favour. Squeeze your own.

Of all the “how it’s made” videos ever created...this is like, the one that I didn’t ever have to watch a video to learn how orange juice is made. lol
In a past life I used to deliver freight to Tropicana's plant in Ft. Pierce. They do not waste anything in the Orange business. The peels are turned into fertilizer or sold to local ranchers for cow feed. Cow's love orange peel!
What they don't tell you is that spiders LOVE orange trees.
Noooooo

Also didn't mention that all the juice oranges are the 'garbage' oranges. The ones that aren't up for shipping or sold in stores.
That is not true. 80% of the oranges are grown for the express purpose of turning it into juice. They are top quality oranges.

they don't in natural ones :P

so.. this factory makes 2 types of orange juic
1 with pulp
1 with no pulp
the factory next door makes 2 kinds of vodka

2. there is hose that connects the 2 factories
the hose runs from each factory and becomes 1 hose at the other end,
in the hose, Vodka and Orange are combined hehe

Why do ppl drink orange juice for breakfast? It taste horrible after you brush your teeth
PLazz257 Because you're supposed to brush your teeth *after* breakfast to get the food particles off
Some Kind Of Cat That's nasty imo.
PLazz257 so you brush your teeth and then eat?
+Some Kind Of Cat No. Eating weakens your enamel down a little bit. And if you brush after, you're brushing off the weakened enamel. So brush before you eat. 😃
Esana DeHenre That's why I don't brush my teeth until 1/2 hour after I'm done. But there's no way in hell I'm going anywhere with dirty teeth.

Other things worth mentioning in this variety of report:
•There are two broad varieties of oranges -- for juicing and for eating.
It's a shame that such a great superb excellent video is so low resolution! It's a real shame!
