Hello, My surname is Payne. DNA testing with FTDNA Big-Y and 23&me confirm my ancestry is 95.5% Celtic. Until then, our genealogical records, thanks to property owned in London by 1274 that continued to be connected with the family into the 17th-century., and some fortunate connections with odd surnames like Smalpece, we had concluded our ancestry to be NORMAN through the Payn’s of Jersey who descend directly from the Domesday Paynel’s of Normandy. Needless to say, I am desperate to reconcile the DNA with the records. I know that my 9th gr-grandparents came to Maryland from London in 1664 on the Golden Fortune and with the maiden name of Smalpece, we were able to match them to East Anglia where the two families had intermarried since the late 1400s. In Norfolk at that time the family was closely connected to the Boleyn’s and Butler’s, Earls of Ormond, the Earl of Ulster, the Darcy’s, and others who held interests in Ireland. Blomefields county history says our family descended from an Irish clerk by the name of Adam Payn who must have lived prior to 1400. There is a record of a Bishop Adam Payn as well as another Bishop named John Payn who was close to the Earl of Kildare (Fritz-Gerald’s). But there is no mention about their family in Meath, Cork, Cloyne, or Kilkenny where they are mentioned. Importantly, there are clues to be found in the records of a Ralph Butler and Nicholas Payn from North Kilworth, Leicester. Dated 1333, where land is exchanged as well as the title of Chief Butler of Ireland to Nicholas Payn and his heirs. While Nicholas never held or claimed the office, his son, John Payn (d. 1402), was appointed Chief Butler of England in 1399 and his descendant, Thomas Payne, married Elizabeth Boleyn in 1536 and quarter their arms with those given to John the Butler- who was a friend of Geoffrey Chaucer who was in the household of the Earl of Ulster. The Paynes had been business associates and city officials in Southampton with Chaucer’s father and grandfather. Henry Payne of Nowton, Suffolk, died in 1568, owning the Ellesmere Chaucer of The Canterbury Tales, indicating the closeness of the relationship. It seems that my family left Ireland before the time of the plague in the mid-1300’s and settled for a brief time in Leicestershire before moving into Norfolk and rapidly growing there and into Suffolk. I am just beginning to research in Ireland and find it extremely challenging given the time period. Looking for any mention of the family that may be a clue. Then there is the DNA mystery of how to reconcile a Celtic ancestry with several matches with ancient DNA in Ireland, a few in England- and the only other surname associated with my haplogroup happens to be BUTLER! The results include a write up about descent from Niall… Afraid I need some help sorting things out and how that relates to records from Jersey and Normandy then evidently back into Ireland and England? Open to recommendations for the DNA/ Genealogical help. At this stage it seems necessary. Thank you for listening
some say Jeremiah .. . i don’t know it’s really complicated.. definitely the Irish have been unfairly picked on, genocided and evicted over and over. the Irish are really good people from my experience. love from Australia 👍🏻
