    Good to see a new generation of BOCHeads. I've became an avid listener after my second listen to MHTRTC back in 1998 on a totally random buy at a record store upon the recommendation of the staff. Hopefully, the brothers are cooking something up for us.

A few to name are Lost Integrity, Clocolan, and Ciaryn. All very good idm artists that give just as much as the BOC vibe.

    Such a damn mysterious band. I don't know if they'll ever return or if they'll ever shine the light of day on their back catalog, but what they did give us is cool as hell (among them Geogaddi which is actually my favorite album ever) and feels incredibly profound and conceptual, which makes it REALLY interesting to wonder where this all started and how it turned into what it became, I mean fuck dude if Sean Booth hadn't gone deep diving at a record shop and found two astronauts hugging on an album cover with the word "Twoism" on it, we'd probably have NONE of this. Great viddy broski, always enjoy your BoC schticks.

    I do a lot of work finding and ripping tapes no one knows about by mostly a subset of late-90s to Early-00s bands no one's ever heard. Often times, these bands would just make mixtapes of random songs for friends or for promo reasons. I have a 53-song mixtape of demos ranging 2007-2020 made for me by the front man of this band called Pataphysics, for example.
    I imagine the "random 35 tracks" tape was like that. Just a mixtape of rarities made for a friend, no artwork, no tracklisting, which he then ripped and threw on the internet.

    -A06 is most likely 5d. Someone uploaded A06 as a music video and mislabled it as "5d". This would normally be considered a fake...until Boards of Canada put set video in an official fan music video playlist they curated.
    -There's also a chance A14 is Godever, as it was being passed around the internet under that name before the R35TT leak.

    also adding to the authenticity of R35TT is the fact that some of the samples used in the songs there are notable for appearing in later releases as well - A06's melody, for example, was used in a track called Seven Forty Seven on Warp20.
    Also of note, A06 features a sample of a kid saying "does that come with uhh, chicken fingers?", which is used in the track "Dave (I'm A Real Traditionalist)" from Old Tunes Vol. 2.

    Been thinking about R35TT for a good month (after knowing about it for a decade) before finding this video. It's such a mystery for a band that's already cryptic. It's just so weird that there's bits of MHTRTC, Geogaddi, Old Tapes, and even rare trax (found out that A06 was later sampled in Seven Forty Seven). I don't know what to truly believe personally, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was leaked from a former band member or friend who made a lil mix. Maybe the truth will come out when they FINALLY decide to rerelease the whole thing. I'm so curious to hear BoC as a whole band.

      Relevant discussion from 2009 involving BoC representative "MDG"
      MDG:"I've seen comments a few times about a mystery "35 track" tape which itself is a mystery to us too, sorry"
      audiotrack: "these tracks have to be BOC. they are what i listen to the most. MDG are you saying they are not BOC?"
      MDG: "No I'm not saying they're not BOC, but the compilation itself is a mystery, just a mixture."

  • @squirlmy
    @squirlmy Год назад +4

    I'm about the same age as the duo, and Catalog3 from 1987 would have been when they were 16-17 or so. That's pretty damn young, and it's hard for me to believe they had two previous full albums worth of songs. I think you've done a bit of a disservice not connecting their ages to this pretty big accomplishment, maybe because you're pretty young yourself (at least look so) maybe it's harder to appreciate. Anyways, highly doubtful there's Catalog 1 or 2, and I hope any of your future deep dives includes timelines of how old they were when they made releases, "lost" or not.

    For the authenticity of R35TT. A06 contains a sample later used on 747. And A12 uses a sample later used in Aquarius v3. 747 was released in 2009 in a warp compilation, later than the original leak of R35TT in 2004.
    We can also rule out that R35 was made by BoC or hexagon sun (their studio, where some close friends of them work) via a representative of the studio, calling it “a mystery, just a mixture”.

    BOC is one the most understated & yet influential artist in the history of electronic music... & you can bet i was gob smacked like most when i first herd them as they transcended everything in the musical Landscape when they came on the scene & few artist will ever reach these highs of both unique sonic identity & quality... i got all the major vinyl still from back in the days. as well as all digital stuff most fans have herd though i was never one of those mathematical Raiman super fans tracking down all the detailed mystery box, bread crumb clues the BOC cult following has helped inspire....I just love exceptional music...So this is just a shot in the dark! ...BUT... what if (they) or some one with the 5 lost tapes in their possession scattered most of those lost tapes tracks into that nameless 35 track release? that would both maintain the mystery of the lost tracks as no one could verify it.. while still getting that lost early tunes freely into the hands of fans ? Duno...could be totally off... but that's my 2 cents

    People say that Noatak was a track they played at ATP. A party where any form of filming or recording was strictly forbidden and actively enforced by security at the event. This is what it would have sounded like: ruclips.net/video/PR5mcHuUcB0/видео.html
    They definitely went a long way to prevent people from getting access to the actual tracks. I think the mystery around these missing tapes is what makes it so good and interesting to people. The moment they release all of this, it would probably lose its value except for those already in on it.

    Back in the mid 90s when BOC were starting out with their 1st releases it definitely would have sounded good to pad out their catalogue with some "earlier releases" and chuck up some clips they had lying around as soundbites from those "releases." Of course when they actually started to get an audience these "releases" were quietly wiped from the site but through the magic of the internet the early site was saved and now people have been claiming to have heard these "releases" to give themselves some credentials. Nearly 20 years later there are still countless youtube videos, including this very one talking about albums that never existed in the 1st place and naturally the BOC boys are lapping it up as part of their mysterious character. If any of this stuff existed it would have surfaced years ago, just like r35tt and a few old tunes did. I can´t wait for the day one of the guys lets slip it was all a troll.

    • @alpaca_growing_kit
      @alpaca_growing_kit 2 года назад +3

      There's a very real chance that they do exist. Every (good) band have to start out experimenting and discover their sound. BoC has definitely spend a lot of time slowly cooking up their signature sound, whereas there absolutely must be earlier stuff that they have "released". These "releases" were probably mainly for feedback purposes in the circles of friends, family and likeminded psychonauts in their area. When they started to have a collection of well received tracks, they probably started seeking out label interest and got a foot in the door. The reason that most of their old stuff is not public is very very likely because the boys themselves are not satisfied with the quality.

    • @Teleausencia
      @Teleausencia 2 года назад +1

      @@alpaca_growing_kit There's a very real chance that @lotsofmagnets is right.
      On one hand, from my very own experience, I started making music around 2005 (14 years old) and made like four "albums" (so to speak) nobody but a couple of friends and family listened to. I haven't released them because I find them a bit cringey to be honest. I'd like to dump them to bandcamp just to have proof when I share this story now that I'm 34. To me, that seems to be the case with the Old Tunes tapes and BoC Maxima.
      But... the other stuff could be perfectly made up by the band themselves. Even the artwork seems rushed compared to their other stuff (BoC using IMPACT font on an album cover? Not even as begginers!)
      Also there's a good chance that half of R35 tape is a mix of BOC and someone else's stuff. Remember when Boc Transmission came out in 2019? While it was streaming people were wondering if they're were playing unreleased stuff or if it was just a DJ set. And it was the latter. The mix was so well crafted and revealing of their influences that it could've passed as some rare BOC. And I suspect the band know that and meant it. WIth a so nerdy fandom, they can perfectly troll us as they want (After all they kinda did that when they promoted Tomorrow's Harvest).
      BOC fans are a very "I want to believe" group of people. So I tend to distrust the theories, apply some Okham's razor and asume the most simple alternative is the most probable to be the truth, as boring as it could be.

    I know it’ll never happen due to the nature of band, but a book written by one of the brothers would be a godsend. I would almost prefer that over a new album (well, not really). It would be incredible to see how this all really happened.

    I'm just having my morning coffee and stumbled across your video. I bought Music has the right when it first came out after it got a rave review from Q magazine (in England). As soon as Telephasic Workshop came on, I was hooked.
    I'm fortunate enough to have sourced the albums you're covering and I only wish the brothers would re-release them. Great video. I'll have a look at some of your other BoC work.....

    Hooper Bay is quite AED. Check b-side of Infer Ships Sink. A lot of this is, of course, kids' demo tapes. If they ever listen back they probably shudder slightly. I made my Treeline tapes when we were around 16 and most is still unissued because it will take a genius to save 99% of it!

    great vid, should also be noted that their early live performances featured some unknown tracks, possibly from these albums, this one is speculated to be Noatak from Hooper Bay ruclips.net/video/Jm1BjJNd3JU/видео.html as there's a robotic vocal that sounds like the the song title and shares a similar runtime

    I downloaded a (clearly incomplete) BOC discography maybe 15 years ago. I have:

    Visual Drone (a 12 minute track from Catalog 3)
    Hooper Bay (5 tracks, 30 minutes)
    and much more.

    The Occam's Razor explanation for why these albums are hidden is because they probably are, in the opinion of the band at least, not very good. There are some (hard to find) reviews out there, and they...aren't positive.
    That coupled with the need to clear and license samples probably makes it prohibitively expensive to release these albums for a handful of diehards.

They WERE NOT the actual tapes but digital recordings. I'm remembering the covers for Olde Tunes and Old Tunes Vol 2. Are these lost media? Anyway, didn't think there were some lost albums for BoC, I'd like to hear the stuff pre 1995, has to be HELLA crunchy
