This is the first video I've watched regarding Dusty Miller. It's also the first I've seen from you. I like it so much I'm following you now. 🎉 Thanks for your background studies to give technical names for us. I love the tidbit details. Shalom 🕊️alechem, peace to you. 🙂 👍🏻
Hi @qkcmnt1242 ! 👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for your kind words and welcome to our channel. Let us know if we can help with anything in particular. 😀😊
When I was 6 I had bought an dusty miller, now 12. The plant has grown so BIG, talking huge. Bigger than a viburnum bush, it blooms constantly helping bees!
P.S great video! + for anyone else reading, YOU SHOULD GET A DUSTY MILLER! they do great in a sunny spot
My favorite plant 🥰
Perennial here in Maryland 7a. Been in my garden for years
My dusty miller has grown so big and has even survived the winter so far and I live in GA but it's made it through the past few freezes! I'm so impressed. He's so strong! Mine anyway... Lol
I live in zone 5 and it was planted against a stone wall last year, and guess what, it's lasted through the winter!!!
We love this plant because it's a great pop of color and it does very well in our blistering summers! We live in hardiness zone 9a and we have several dusty miller's that are thriving. They love the heat and ours actually have grown 2 feet tall and about 2 feet wide. We definitely should have planted them in the background, so for others, you might want to consider where you plant them because they'll fill up a space nicely and spread (slowly)!
I love Dusty Miller! I use it all over my garden, including in my hanging baskets. :)
Hi Melina! 👋 Dusty Miller is so versatile. That's awesome you grow it in so many spots around your garden! Thanks for watching!
Zone 6 here - I took a little bit of Dusty Miller from a container mix my mom had given me, where all the other stuff had died, and threw it haphazardly into my front flower bed, not knowing anything about it, just to see what it would do…. To my surprise, with zero care it has grown to a full shrub size in the two years since, and is now bigger than my boxwoods in the same bed. I’m now looking at how to prune it back correctly because it’s gotten so huge. It’s definitely hardy!
I also like this plant - its such a lovely contrast to the green foliage of others, and in the winter has survived well. It's also thrived in my hanging baskets even when I forget to water them (though in the winter the good Lord's done that for me!). My mum had this thriving on her allotment (in the south of the UK) and it grew to a bush size over the years - the tiny yellow flowers were actually very pretty against this silver backdrop. Well worth using in a well drained sunny border.
Love the Dusty Millers! 💙Thank you for information.
Hi Diane! 👋 You are most welcome and we love Dusty Millers, too! thank you for watching!
Your welcome! I have Dusty Miller’s this year in my planters and going to bring them in for the winter, and use next year! Blessings , They are beautiful. 💙🙂
I have alot on my property for years. They grow so big as long as u trim them every so often. Good plants all year long.
Some of the dusty miller I grow from seed survives zone 5B here in Nova Scotia. Depends on what part of the yard. But I have a few going on four or five years old. Some get pushed out of the ground with the frost but I discovered if I can push them back in some survive. Great plant.
I am in zone 6A (Cleveland, Ohio) and for the last several years the Dusty Millers have lived through the winters. They are in ground. The last few years I have just let them be. This year I am going to try to cut them back to the ground and see how they do. Thanks for the video.
Hi Dawn! 👋 Thank you for watching and commenting! That's great you have hardy Dusty Millers. Awesome! They are a great plant to have in any garden. 👍😃
I’m in 7b and it survived my winter too!
Im in NJ. My hardiness zone is 7A and my Dusty Miller is doing great outside with all the frost and all the snow that we had a couple weeks ago.
Hi R Spruill! 👋 That's great to hear that your Dusty Miller is doing so well! Yay! How much snow did you get? ... And thank you for watching and commenting! 😃
@@SpokenGarden You're very welcome... about 5 to 7 inches of snow
Wow! That is a lot of snow. Stay safe and warm, RS! 😊🌞😎
me too! didn't cover it last winter and it still held up!!!
Hi guys hope you have a good day today. I'm out in the garden here in zone 5b today. And I'm using ur content as I plant. So im kinda binge watching ur videos and planting today. Hehe. Love ur channel
Hi Dana! 👋 That is so awesome! How did your planting go? We really appreciate that and thank you so much for watching and commenting! We're glad we can be helpful!! 💚😃
Awesome team!
Hi Donald! 👋 Thank you! 💪😊
I’m in Cleveland OH zone 6. Comes back every year.
Hi Rick! 👋 Thank you for watching and for commenting. That's great your dusty miller comes back every year! Nice!
I'm obsessed with the texture variant in the pot yall had in the backyard with the spiky draecena ('':
I like the name Dusty Miller the best & gonna just stick with that name.
It grows great here in Alaska in my big pots.
I have had no trouble with touching my dusty millers without gloves on.
I have them in my garden, in the south-east of England, and I truly love them and their stunning contrast - they pop out amongst the green. In the spring and summer months their foliage looks fairy-like amongst my cottage and woodland flowers whilst in the winter it reminds me of frosted reindeer antlers (perfect for the season). I have had a few die in shadier areas during the summer months (surviving ones do not thrive so well) and when we suffered harsh frosts during the winter but others survived where they were in more sheltered positions amongst other shrubs and evergreens - the more exposed some were the more they suffered.
Some people dislike the flowers but I leave them because the bees flock to them. We also have ants using them as aphid farms in the summer - they literally herd them on to these plants and have a production line! I could not believe my eyes at first but the ants really know how to utilise these plants 🤷♀️👍🐜
Hi Maria! 👋 That is AWESOME that you have found so much enjoyment with your dusty millers! They really are a stunning plant for so many reasons. Yes, watching ants herd aphids is quite something to watch, right? Thank you for watching and we're glad you enjoyed it!! 😃
Yes those ant aphid farms ruined our nasturtiums this year. gggrrr
Thanks 😊
Hi Brenda! 👋 We hope you found our video helpful and thank YOU for being here and watching. 😃👍
She says don't plant them too close together. That's what I've done along my driveway. A year later their roots are fighting and they all died. Also I forget to cut the dipping then rising shoots, so it was not airy for them.
Then again I have a clump planted all together in better soil and they are all around 3 to 4 foot tall.
I just got one of this ones so I needed the info. Thanks. Im from Puerto Rico by the way so we'll see how it goes for her here
Hi Alice! 👋 That's awesome you got a dusty miller! They really are beautiful plants. Thanks for watching and we're glad the video was helpful!
Growing mine indoors and it was thriving the first couple of weeks but I must have over watered it because it is now drooping and looks awfully sad. I plucked the leaves that looked most affected and will wait for the soil to completely dry out. Wondering if I should put it in a shady area just to ensure it's not getting too much light as it is about a foot away from a window.
So informative! Thanks 🙏🏽
Hi Jenny! 👋 Thank you for watching and we're so glad it was helpful!
Thanks for your answers on dusty miller! I'm going to try repotting to see if that helps the longevity. Do I have to plant them w other flowers?
Can I cut down potted dusty miller and mulch it to overwinter it in a pot? Zone 8b, Pacific Northwest, so lots of rain and about 3-4 weeks of freezing temps Nov-Feb.
I just cut down my dusty miller both of them were 3 ft tall. But what I noticed was the stalks were about 2 inches wide and flat with lots of leaves and then it separated into 2 tops that started to curl like a C shape ???? Not in wet soil, no fertilizer, good draining soil, sunny location in zone 8. What would cause that to happen. The plants are in great shape.
I didn’t know dusty miller was poisonous. Can you propagate by placing cuttings in water? Thanks.
Can you root it in water
do you make it bustier by cutting the tips, or taking leaves off or both? thx
I bought this plant yesterday
I just wonder what's the use and facts of this plant
I’m in 7a , and it’s a perennial for me
Can I water daily ? Because when I don't water it daily the leaves of this plant become droopy and dull
My DM is in full sun, but it's turning red! What can I do? I want it to stay white!
Mine has gone wild! It’s about a meter wide and over two feet tall. It’s flowering right now but I need to know how to prune it. Help
Hi there! Dusty Millers can be a little tricky sometimes because it depends on which one you are growing. Take a look at the interior of the plant; the inner stems and even the crown (icydk: the soil surface where the roots and shoots meet) to see if any new shoots or leaves are starting to grow. If so along any inner stems (inside the canopy) or growing up from the crown, you can then give your plant a decent "hair cut" to re-establish it's size and form. This can be pruning away 1/3 of the total plant canopy or much more drastic, depending on the situation. If you do this, be sure before hand that the plant is well hydrated and in the best health it can be so it can take this pruning stress and can recover faster. Also do this type of pruning during this time of year on more cloudy day and in the earlier morning so sun intensity and heat are at their lowest possible and aren't already stressing the plant out. If you plant isn't exhibiting any inner new growth or crown growth right now, wait to see if it does the next month or two and then prune away what you need to. We should make a video on this because we end up doing this every year to our dusty miller's and it can be a little tricky and subjective to specific conditions. Hopefully that helps and you can assess your plants accordingly. Let us know how it goes!
My recently bought dusty miller is wilting its leaves...any tip pls..
Hi Samar! 👋 Sorry to hear your dusty miller plant is wilting. A couple of things to check:
Soil moisture #1 - stick your finger down into the soil around your plants roots and if you don't feel any moisture, then a lack of water could be the problem. Soil moisture #2 - if you stick your finger in the soil and find that there is an excessive amount of water/mucky or water isn't draining, then there is too much water around the roots to cause wilting and rotting the roots.
Wrong soil type could be causing wilting.
Dusty Miller placement: if you have intense sunlight and your plant is exposed to it for a long period of time, this can make the plant wilt.
Transplanting #1: if you recently transplanted your dusty miller, this could be causing some wilting. If you transplanted weeks ago and the wilting has been constant, then the cause could be from something else.
Transplanting #2: if you transplanted your dusty miller and over 50% of it's root mass was removed during the transplanting, then wilting can happen cause there aren't the same amount of roots to take up water for the same amount of leaves up top.
There are other causes it could be. Hope this helps and thank you for watching. 👍😊
@@SpokenGarden hi...thnx for a very detailed response..
Just bought mine too and its wilted but we’re gonna repot and see how she goes, i love the snow like antlers
Hi, my dusty miller was doing well until 4weeks ago (winters). I live in a hot area, around 45°C in summers. As summers approaching, it has lost many leaves and become soggy, also has thinner roots now. Please help me for summer conditions
Hi Pragati! 👋 We are sorry to hear your dusty miller isn't doing very well. With your description of "soggy" and "has thinner roots", you could be over-watering it. Leaf loss, root die-back, and soggy-ness are all possible signs of overwatering. Depending on where it is located in your garden, it could also be suffering from too much intense sunlight, if in full sun most of the day. If it gets as hot in the summer as you say, a partial shade to mostly shady location for your dusty miller might work better. For now, move your plant to a much less intense sun area and let the soil dry out some before watering it again. Then water as needed, but not letting the soil get soggy again. Remove any dead or dying plant tissue (leaves or stems). After doing all this, keep up regular watering as we have described above and then wait to see how your plant reacts. We hope it goes well and it can survive. Thank you for watching, sorry for our delayed response, and take care. 😃👍
Can I put with my yellow tulips?
Hi Jay! 👋 Sorry for our late response to your question. Absolutely you can put your tulips with your dusty miller. We hope you were able to enjoy your yellow tulips this spring and thank you for asking your question and being here. 😃👍
You lost me at “poisonous”. 😮
