The reason for three temples in the 1950s was due mainly to the tribal groupings among the Kalmyks. In Howell there were two temples, one for the Buzava and another for the combined Derbet/Torghut (the group that came out of Russia during WW II whereas the Buzava left Russia in 1920) . The Philadelphia temple was Buzava and the distance between the Howell and Philadelphia Buzavas necessitated two temples. The Nitsan temple grew out of a conflict within the Rashi Gempi Ling temple when a subset decided to split off and build their own temple. Both temples in Howell voted against having Geshe Wangyal as their spiritual leader in 1955, thus leading Geshe Wangyal to found the Labsum Sherub Ling monastery in Howell in 1958.
