I remember back in the 80’s the electronically controlled Incandescent fairy lights with several circuits in the entire length for flashing sequences etc. They must have been hand wired back then judging by the high price.

Per your question about quality control, I like Cognex cameras they will look for color abnormality's. The light string would have to be pulled under the camera as each LED passes a photo eye that triggers the camera to look for the correct color. Perhaps you should do this step before the plug is soldered on and the string is spun. After the string is complete use a scale to check for correct weight, if it is too light weight something is missing and that string would be rejected.

Older (blinking) models are mostly true 4 colors 4 channels (1 color per channel controller) which I love for having smooth and vivid effects but unfortunately they're getting rare nowadays... Today's blinking models are mostly faux 4 channels (2 channel controller with 2 colors per channel) mostly due to cost cutting because it omits 2 thyristors in the controller.

I always thought. Must take time doing the soldering of the actual LED to the wire length. No then. So automated, impressed, Even make the wires up from bare thin copper string, ok not official but not sure what it is called, copper on the rolls. Machine must even get the right way as LED need to be conected the right way. Bulbs not so fussy. A bit of work by hand at the later stages and test. No fume extraction on the soldering iron a bit poor. We had that 27 years ago somewhere. solder in face all day, they will have problems over time. Nice interesting video.

IMHO to make a machine that would check if any LED's are out in a string, a machine could be made where the energized string is fed past a light sensor [CDS cell or photo resistor.] this would tell if any lights are not working, and a tag would be placed next to the non operating lights then the string would be rejected and sent back for repair. but repairs would be time consuming and also would take these ladies jobs away . but just disposing of an entire string would be wasteful and not cost efficient.
