Today I work on restoring a Plumb Champion and a Collins Legitimus Connecticut for a customer.
Vintage Axe Works way of laying out handles on raw lumber, cutting them on the bandsaw, and top 3 heads I hate to hang!

You are a true artist/craftsman........ Wife thinks I have too many axes...... I need to show her your shop, Great job man,.... keep'em coming!!
Beautiful work. never stop. Keep the vids coming ☺️
Awesome man! Been watching you on Instagram, just found your Channel!
Thanks for sharing !! It helped me a lot! Keep grinding!
Keep em coming! Enjoying it!
Killinger thank you ... I enjoy you too!!
Thanks for all your videos! I learned very match from them. I all sow restore axes but me shop is in Ukraine, so I get a tone of Soviet axes and European axes, American axes are very rear in my country. Thear for seen all thaws sweet axe heads in your shop is all most physical pain )))) Don't be lazy, make more videos! (sorry for my bad english)
Thanks for following along... I'll do this as long as I can keep it up!
Man I wanna build a nice ax handle is why I came here for my ax and trying to get the cut right so it fits in the ax head tight where it won't break or sling loose is a pain in ass but I got it finally thank you man for your video
Absolutely in heaven looking at the walls brother
I seen a plumb champion on eBay and it wasn’t cheap. That is good good so far. 👍
Ronald Towns all of these etched axes are getting very expensive
Hey VAW!
I will start doing my first very axe. Getting the head forged by a smith and currently looking for a special wood blank to use. I am thinking Ziricote/Bocote. Nearly as strong as Shagbark hickory. Might also look for purpleheart, 2x shagbark strength!
Now my question is, what tools should I get for working the wood blank into a nice shaft?
The tools I already have is angle grinder. So rasping disc and lamell/Sanding discs is cheap and easy to get.
Or should I avoid using the angle grinder all in all and just get a draw knife, shinto rasp and a stationary beltsander (that seems best way to mace accurate sanding compared to angle grinder)
Have both of those exact axe heads about to do the same job you’re doing Well not exactly. What’s your thoughts on a value of just the two heads ?Serious set up ya got going in the background 👍👍
Loving the vlogs keep em coming
Robert Gilkerson doing my best
@@vintageaxeworks2777 where can I buy the wood to make handles I can’t find it online anywhere
Y did you stop filming man and makin axes?
great video! I really like your workshop, I just realized that your walls are made from freakin' pallet wood - love that, haha ;) How do you deal with humidity in your shop? I mean ideally we want the handle wood to be as dry as possible to make a tight fit
Nice Axes and i like your Handles.
_Slipknot90_ thanks a ton!!! Lots of work in those 👊
I know you love heavy metal 🤘
Looks great man! I was wondering what your starting thickness of the blanks you make are?
Hawker Typhoon I start at 5/4
Hawker Typhoon I start with 5/4
Hey I'm up in Indiana and I'm my own lumber source.. I'll watch this one I guess lol
Great video. Thanks for the info. Subbed fo sho!
Cheers
What thickness is your handle stock? 5/4?
hi from Türkiye.. I'm following you on Instagram and ı like your works.
What wood use?
That two line tip great tip that will work qith finding center lines on steal pieces during fabrication if edge has dips my soap stone will show those like your pencil and I will know somewhere between is true center. I work in a fab shop we fab industrial handrails stairways for industrial plants steel beams that construct all the structures that make plants structures and buildings we got put clips with volt holes down center of web of beams for stuff to bolt and end playes and some beams can have 20 plates all around it on every center line to bolt other beams to it so I'm gonna use that trick where fab work is even that much closer to perfect on center as yoy can possibly get to help the iron workers out in field so they hopefully don't have to do much drilling holes bigger bigger make bolts holes line up or anything serious on them as much as possible on my part for them and even when cutting stuff with torch I can run my cutting between the two lines cuse that is center instead of on on side and leaving line show or cut line in half or so on you get the point
Nice shop
How is it by “hand” if you’re using an electric saw?
Where did you get a handle pattern?
And that is alot of axes you have done Handel's on and fixed or inline to be fixed dang man I didn't know ax building and repair like this is a huge bussines just thought everyone went to lowes or hardware store buys a axe with fiberglass handle and goes to work chopping wood maybe thats where I have been going wrong and different shape handles might give me better leverage and make it easier on me i got research to do to find the axe head type and handle shape that will be most comfortable and easier to work with for me
any recommendations on good course woodworking rasps, course metal working resps, spokeshave, Pullsaw or good woodworking saw, chisels, and anything anything else?
Should I get a bandsaw or table saw?
bandsaw, pull saws suck, Bahco rasps are veryyy good, find a vintage spokeshave or make your own (Look up rex Kruger spokeshave) and you need a drawknife.
@@javanbybee4822 what type of measuring tools should I get
@@bf3forevergreene165 a tape measure and speed square. For a saw buy a Dewalt panel saw or a Irwin panel saw.
@@javanbybee4822 y a panel saw? That looks like something for construction crews, and I have a circular saw and it keeps catching and bucking back is it the blade or the tool itself? It’s a like 45$ black and decker saw should I pay for a more expensive one?
@@bf3forevergreene165 well, a panel saw works great for hogging matterial off if you don't have a bandsaw. Check the tightness of the blade, or buy a better blade.
You didn’t show hardly any shaping of the handle. Is it a secret? You show the silly retakes over and over, but the valuable info I was looking for was completely absent. You use a draw knife? Files? bandsaws? Please show your process
This videos sucks
where can I get a good axe handle template
Not exactly by hand is it
Later Garth brooks
What?!? The video didn’t show how you make a handle though. Wanted to see how you shape it
Hey man, seeing your shop in this video made me finally connect the motherfucking dots.. What I wanna do with the rest of my life is have an axe shop. It took me 30 years, failed careers, and a vodka buzz over a dominoes sub sandwhich (*now cold* bc I've been smacking oak LOGS for the last 2 hours since delivery) I apologize for the death by detail. In conclusion, fuck dominoes. Thank you for helping me realize what my path really is, and also that it's okay to buy something besides bourbon ONCE in a while. Man, if you feel like making some less fundamental videos, I would be mf grateful for videos on the unseen side of running a shop for us new guys who wanna jump off the ground in the trade. Like what are some nuances you've overcome being more of vet in the industry? I know that hard lessons are (L)earned and I understand if you are reluctant to just give these hard earned lessons away. Just tell me to fuck off on that but fr, I hope for a response. I feel like Stan, writing Eminem hahaha goddamn. That's a gnarly scar on your eye, also 🤘alright man, til then.
Whats up with this guy's eye? It looks like he drank too much Jack Daniels or something?
Lars Larson you fool!!!
@@vintageaxeworks2777 I just call it from my many years of knowing you.
Ugh. The hairsies.
Giant Pinhead bah Ha ha ha!!
I like the outro it reminds of mr. Rogers. Lol very cool. Maybe you should sing a song as you leave and put on your hoodie.
Nat Mat I’ll give it a go!! Thank you
