Probably one of my favorite fight scenes of all time. I love how the furniture gets in the way of the fight, how it transitions from swords, to a pistol, to grappling, and how it focuses less on skill with swords as it does a scrappy aggressive fighting style, which thematically makes sense for pirates.
I remember seeing this at some point in my childhood and thinking it was so cool and then i lost it to memory. Literally just stumbled upon this by watching a Roman Polanski interview which lead me to find his film Pirates (1986). Made me think of some scenes in this movie so I dug a little deeper and boom, 1990! Seeing the cast of this film assembled holy shit why was this not released in theaters in the U.S.? I can only wish some top name director can make a serious pirate film (unlike pirates of the caribbean).
TI has been made multiple times and I'd never heard of this one. Just finding out Christopher Lee plays Blind Pew makes me want to see it. Pew isn't a big part but he's a scary character and I'm confident Lee would do him proud.
@@arnoldronning5471 Also the best pirate novel ever. I have complaints about every film version I've seen but I never saw this one and my appetite's definitely whetted.
This Century may have Jack Sparrow, Barbosa, Will Turner et al but the last had Oliver Reedd, Christopher Barnes, Christopher Lee and of course Charlton Heston. The sword play and other fighting scenes are pretty well spot on (for anyone who has wielded a cutlass). In short a fine movie by the Powers and well ahead of Buckheimer and Disney.
When you've got characters with names like Black Dog, Long John Silver, Billy Bones and even Jim Hawkins, you know you've got a great story on your hands 🏴☠ The actors in this version of the film did a brilliant job, if ye be askin' me. I'm thinking of reading a Scottish Gaelic translation of the book. Interestingly, they translated Black Dog as "Madadh Dubh", which means Black Wolf.
I was always curious about why Billy Bones had the map. Did Flint give it to him to safeguard because he didn't want the treasure falling into the hands of his old crew? If Billy stole the map, why hide away at an inn when he could go after the treasure?
In the book, Billy is the only one with Flint when he dies. Stevenson never says whether Flint wanted him to share with the crew or not but Billy chooses to keep it for himself. That could be just because he's greedy but it could also be he feels he deserves it more . Billy and Silver are the only ones who didn't waste the money they got pirating. Billy may figure he deserves the treasure more than the others who would waste it. There is no explanation given for why Billy does not immediately go after the treasure. My conjecture has always been that he knew Silver would be after him so he hides, figuring the old crew will eventually give up searching and then he can get the treasure without fear. Of course he's far too sick and alcoholic to live that long but he doesn't know that.
Arrrrrgh harrrrrr............ me ansome....... Great scene, well acted and fought, but spot the electric cable running across the outside wall of the tavern in the last shot.
Damp coastal air. If he didn't pull his charges and reload with fresh powder on the regular with a sharp flint, yeah, it's not a wonder he had a misfire.
BEST TREASURE ISLAND FOLLOWS THE BOOK FAIRLY WELL!! READ THE BOOK MANY TIMES AT SEA IN MY BUNK. STILL HAVE THE BOOK IN MY DUFFEL BAG. I HOPE WHEN I DIE I GET SENT BACK TO COLONIAL ENGLAND 1772 WOULD BE GREAT. THE DAYS OF PRESS GANGS AND BURIED TREASURE.
sind/cosl Hayden Memorial library looking out seaward Cambridge, Mass. Might find my mark engraved scratched on one of the tables. The old white wooden buildings 2nd deck Vassar Street gone now.

JZ909 Couldn’t agree more.
Especially given how much rum Bill's been drinking.
This is still the best cutlass fight ever done on film in my opinion. Like you said, it's not a duel, it's a brawl.
Arguably the best Treasure Island ever put to film, certainly the best cast. Christopher Lee as Pew. Classic.
I honestly in 17 years of having watched it couldn't argue
Not arguably. It is the best, by far.

I recommend the old soviet movies, they are truly something else
I like how they remembered the sign. In the book, Billy Bones would have killed Black Dog if the sign hadn't gotten in the way.
Yes, this version is pretty true to the book.
yep
I love the music when they sit down watching each other like hawks. very atmospheric
Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins....Who knew what a superstar he would become.
Later 2002!Jim Hawkins (Treasure Planet) became Robin in Nolanverse Batman movie.
This wasn’t scripted, this was just Oliver Reed between takes.
itsconnorstime Well said! Frazier Heston was more than the son of Charleton, he was a damned fine director. Best pirate movie ever.

Nice to see Oliver Reed in his natural habitat.

Masterpiece of a tv film

For a drunk man, Billy Bones was a scrapper
Black Dog-a friend of Flint, hunts for a map of treasure island. The character is secretive. Not married.
Only the lucky few get this reference!
The Russian version of Treasure Island, good reference
BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!

Remember kids - always keep your powder dry! Or was he sp drunk he forgot to load it in the first place??
Damp coastal air. If he didn't pull his charges and reload with fresh powder on the regular with a sharp flint, yeah, it's not a wonder he had a misfire.
Black Dog is my role model.
"Swing one swing all"
Even Heston played the part. Brilliant adaptation.
Do we ever learn what position Bones held in Flint's crew? I can't remember. Also, can someone tell me where I can watch this full movie?
Fantastic job
