Between 1980 and 81 Torvill & Dean made such a dramatic improvement that the judges just couldn't do anything other than place them first at Euro's and World's. Torvill & Dean never put a foot wrong, their edges, technique, choreography and artistry just took Ice Dance to another level. Bestiamanova & Bukin were always dynamic - the only interesting FD from this team was 1978 (but I was 7 years old at the time!)
and they were lucky for being rewarded the gold medal in any world championship ever....there coach tchaikovskaya was very powerful back then as she coached pakhamova gorshkov to gold in 76 but moiseeva minenkov were better than this couple and were placed behind them.......alot of politics
@@grantnoroyan9275 Toller Cranston wrote in his autobiography Moiseeva & Minenkov's results declined since technically they werent strong enough. They were a lot more artistic and interesting to watch than this team though so I dont know.
@libralady1010 Many people thought that Min&Mo owned that Olympic gold over (way overrated) Regoczy/Sallai and (even more overrated) Linichuk/Karponosov, but it certainly wasn't their year, unfortunately.
The judges did not just fall out of of love with L and K; the judges shoved them aside off the stage. Judging at figure skating is all political; it is all about finding the next great individual skater or couple. Linichuk and Karponosov won two World Championships and an Olympic gold so the ISU decided they had won enough and decided the next great dance team would be Torvill and Dean. Ragoeczy and Sallay won the 1980 World's and then retired after that; Min and Mo continued on in 1981, but they were not that good anymore and had already won two World Championships as well as two Olympic medals so the ISU was right in recognizing Torvill and Dean as the next great skaters. After 1984 Best and Bukin dominated to win Olympic gold in 1988 as their reward; Klimova and Ponomarenko won Olympic gold in 1992 as their reward for being great and sticking around through the B and B years.
they lost because they were not good plain and simple there was no strategy or secret they shouldnt have won in 78 79 or the 80 olympics they were beaten at worlds in 80 the year they won olympics and they actually should have been 3rd.......moiseeva and minenkov were better regoetzy and sally were better and torvill and dean were better period.
@@rolandgreen7484 Yeah, if M&M hadn't fallen at the end of their 1978 Worlds FD, I would've had them first. But since they did fall, L&K placing first was fine IMO (even though I could barely watch that FD). In 1979, M&M had changed their style that year and I remember not being fond it their Spanish FD that year and the judges didn't either as they dropped down to 3rd. Their (L&K) 1980 Olympic victory was very iffy.
@@rolandgreen7484 I believe you're correct. After placing 3rd at Europeans in 1981, they were basically ordered to leave. I think the 3rd Soviet team at the 1981 Worlds was Volozhinskaya and Zvinin.
@@rolandgreen7484 V&Z were a very tall and striking team but not great skaters IMO. By the time 1984 came around, Klimova & Ponomarenko easily overtook them.
I think there was more to their decline than just the judges "falling out of love" with them. Their reputation between 1978+79 carried them through the Olympics in 1980, where their technique had already became jerky, her lines less clean, and their steadiness and charisma lost, etc. Here, the music, the choreography, etc. don't make much sense to me... It even seemed as though they were improvising at times!
@@vlchr It is all a fascinating story…because, believe it or not, L&K did win the Soviet Nationals rather convincingly with this perplexingly disappointing program over Min-Mo, who placed 2nd, and Bestemianova/Bukin, who finished 3rd. So, perhaps L&K entered this competition, fully intending to win. Unfortunately, perhaps the Soviet Federation didn’t “get it” that, in the eyes of the international judges, L&K’s career was over and they were no longer the favorites.
