Just a quick thanks for this video. It reminded me to check my car, where I found that both of these temperature switches were not working. I pulled the front red one out first without bothering to drain the system and only lost a little coolant in the process. I then siphoned some coolant out through the hole, before removing the inner grey one and so I could clean around the holes. The car now seems to warm up and idle when cold a lot better. My grey thermal switch bottom had completely rusted off, so will need to flush the system anyway.
I saw the thumb nail for the video and for a moment my bottom fell out, my first ever car was a VW Polo 1.3 formula E, with a full boot sun roof spoiler and the same grill you have on this, one day when i win the lotto I will have that old car with a 2.4 Honda Vtec engine with no turbo
That Polo will be getting the upgrade if it's life ! I'm guessing it was a MK2 polo. I always liked them ever since a friend had one back in the early 90's
@@richardjweeks I had a B reg whats that a 1985 ish, all the other polos were more of a two door van look car mine was 4 door and with a boot and \i think formula e was the model but very distinctive was the grill with the double head light, there was even a button name SSA and when pressed every time i came to lights or pulled up the engine would cut out and restart when the gear stick was moved, that did my head in lol
I just looked it up and it's a rare beast these days. The formel E was the economy engine setup so I guess that's what the annoying start stop feature was about. In some ways ,well ahead of its time.
Richard I can’t thank you enough for this video. I’ve checked mine and they are both broken as well. Only problem is I can’t find the red sensor on the vw heritage web site but not the grey one. They list a green/black sensor (251919501D) but I can’t find the grey one. You you have the part number? Or is the green/black one the same?

They seem to be a common problem on these older golfs. Makes a big difference when done.
Very interesting, always wondered how they worked. Thanks for sharing. :)
Me too!
