He just memorised very basic sentences. His Spanish was very rudimentary and quite broken.

Every country I've been as a tourist I saw poor kids selling their lil souvenirs and did so on at least 5 languages. Need is a good teacher
Not hard to learn languages at that age. Also highly likely the tourists did teach him some phrases directly, learning languages necessitates you understood what is being said in order to memorized them. You can't just guess everything you're hearing (unless it's based on romance languages).
Most likely just rudimentary phrases, you can't speak 12 languages fluently at the age of 9 that's just simply impossible. However, it's still incredibly impressive that a 9 year old is doing this
