- My attempt at composing and producing Pokémon style boss / battle music in one short session using my keyboards and synthesizers.
Disclaimer: I've never played a Pokemon game, so I'm not too familiar with the music. You'll have to let me know I came close or not.
Regardless, I'm quite happy with how this one turned out, it was a lot of fun!
Also, sorry if I mispronounced "Pokemon" throughout - I didn't grow up in the US and I wasn't sure how it's pronounced here.
Anyway, thanks for the cool ideas for new episodes - keep em' coming!

As far as Ideas, I'd love to hear a From Scratch™ episode on a water theme. Every video game worth it's saltwater usually has a water level. I'm sorry if it's not game specific but it is trope specific! :P

as a pokemon fan, THIS SLAPS!!
that mixes actually two types of motives that pokemon themes have for trainers in general, which are the motives of evil opponents (team leaders, uses lots of brass and chaos, reference: team magma/aqua themes, team plasma and other teams) and the motives of strong rivals (rival itself/champions/gym leaders, organ piano and others, reference: steve theme, Cynthia theme, almost every powerful champion theme) and also have the base of a rival theme style
my headcanon for this music is of a rival pokemon trainer that start as your friend but on his journey of becoming the champion he become corrupt and convinced in use his pokemons in the most nefarious ways, and having TRUE powerful pokemons and technique (he would play with perfect IV pokemons, shiny pokemons even, and with a very calculated strategy to change pokemons right when needed unlike the common AI), he dominate the region as a champion without anyone that can stop him, except you, maybe, being a challenge bigger than any other before him, and even optional as can be too hard to beaten.

Since Pokémon is a thing for my 22yr old son and not me, I took this up to him and actually interrupted his ongoing video gaming to have him listen and watch. He was amazed at how well this would fit - he agreed with your boss mode! He said it was great. ☺️

Ive loved pokemon since it came out Mario and Sim City its nice having something like that you can grow up with and still be into especially with having parents divorce and aunts keep getting remarried often and new step moms its nice to have something stable.
It's amazing to me how fast you come up with these complicated orchestrated pieces. Love it. Thanks Gil!

I feel like this'd actually fit pretty well into some of the newer games. Love that you pulled in some of the older conventions of the series' battle themes. That little descending bit at 9:19 in particular feels right out of the Gen IV - V era, great stuff. Great work as always G.

@@GLASYS @GLASYS Dive in man. Game quality has certainly faltered from time to time, but the music is consistently great. Also, looked around a bit, here's (ruclips.net/video/H_3m-oFf2CA/видео.html) the specific song that descending bit reminded me of (hits at around the 15 second mark). Instrument is different, but the idea is very similar. Always loved the off-kilter, unsettling vibe of that track, was really cool to hear you channel shades of that (intentional or not lol).
It kind of reminds me of Mega Man, but I could see it being a Pokemon song.

This is fantastic! I think you nailed a heap of the elements of the music in Pokemon. Admittedly I haven't played them in 20 years but it brought me back!

I am deeply in love with the B section, especially the way it drops back into the main theme. I also don't have too much experience with Pokémon (not since I was playing Gen 1 in elementary school) but this track is an absolute banger, glad it got that second hour to be fleshed out because some of the accents and flair added toward the end really gave it a lot of life. Terrific stuff as always!

Awesome composition! I can really see this as an actual Pokemon theme (although I don’t play that much Pokemon). Still, this video was really good.

This could definitely work in a Pokemon game, and let's be honest, this would be beter than 80% of the existing tracks in the series already. Pretty solid work done by someone who are not familiar with the games at all. Great job!

Watching your creative process is absolutely amazing. It's an interesting look at someone not really familiar with the franchise giving it a go, trying to make something that fits. Ultimately, the music came out awesome, particularly the B-half of the music is absoltely excellent. As someone who's played since the franchise began, I didn't really... Feel the essence of Pokemon, though it could easily fit into another JRPG.
Would love to see another go at music from Pokemon. If you do, take some time from each generation to listen in and hone in on style or genre. Pokemon games tend to be quite varied. Much like others who've commented, the missing element is a kind of... Hopefulness in a dire situation. Music from the Elite Four, particularly the ones from Black and White, are a great way to see that. It's intense, fast-paced, and has an intimidating feel while also inspiring a player in the midst of the challenge to keep going.

I never played or watched Pokémon either but this definitely has an old rpg battle feel. The melody on top also sounds like it could be from a Mega Man game. Definitely sounds cool! Can’t wait for the next one!

Position 12:19 - Gorgeous how many tension this syncope adds to this part. Together with the hats at 3:39 the whole rhythm composition fits perfectly into what I expect from an adrenaline driven game sequence. It instantaneously reminds me on M.U.S.H.A. (Musha Aleste) for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) which came out in 1990. As always a great pleasure to see GLASYS making fine tracks from scratch and that fast. Creative use of the Prophet horn samples. For not having much Pokemon exposure, you really captured the essence. Dat lead tho. Mmmmm yummy.

0:36, you have to, while it is just a monster Turn based RPG, its one of my most favorite game series. also the show really helps get a sense of the world that you explore in the games, and you can also watch the first gen series, Sun/Moon, and Sword/Shield ones too anytime on the Pokémon TV site,
I'm sure I'd enjoy the games, if the next release on Switch is good I'll definitely check it out!
It would fit a great Sinnoh crossover music. Of course, every game has different arrangements, but it feels very Sinnohish themed. I must say the arrengement does not feel like Pokémon music, but all the other aspects of the music does lol

Sounds absolutely awesome but definitely a Megan song. Pokemon is very simplistic. Great music but they typically don't have this level of complexity and depth. 🤣 Fantastic work as always.

@@GLASYS I guess that's true for more modern games. I've played for a long time , so I'm thinking more of classic pokemon music, but back then limitations to the sound chips of the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance back in the day hampered complexity in the past.

Great skills! I'd say it's a bit too fast and complex for a simple Pokemon battle theme, but it would be a perfect fit for a legendary encounter (for example, listen to the Uxie Mesprit and Azelf theme)

Your theme seems to be missing the triumphant elements of Pokemon battle themes. It has the intensity of an imposing boss or impossible odds, but there should be elements that display optimism. It sounds much more similar to a more edgy JRPG like Chrono Trigger than Pokemon.
But since I'm the topic of JRPGs, could you make a Dragon Quest song? It's completely different from anything I have heard from you but I think that could be an amazing demonstration of your range if you could pull it off.
edit: its pronounced "Po-kay-mon" but Americans in general don't know how to say it right so anything is generally accepted. Po-key-mon, po-kuh-mon, etc...
