Contrary to many commenters here, I like that this channel is actually focusing on other states' politics in the US instead of the same tired few swing states that most mainstream media reporting on the US election is focusing on. It's a nice reminder that the US actually has more than 7 states, and that we really should be looking at more than just the tipping points of the election to get a more holistic picture of the US.

Lol, they cover those swing states because those are the states that actually win one the presidency i.e. the most important ones in the election cycle.
If the United States would just get rid of its Rube Goldberg, biased, undemocratic electoral college election system and use the popular vote in presidential elections then every voter's vote would count equally and the press would cover voters all over the country in every election.
Right now only the swing voters in swing states effect presidential elections so they get almost all the attention.

Fun fact, Alaska is unique where the rural areas are typically blue and the higher dense areas are more red.
Very interested, actually. Now, I want to see a video as to why that is.
@@ex0stasis72 Native-majority areas in the "Alaskan Bush" have voted more democratic, whereas conservative/libertarian voters in Anchorage and most other cities traditionally voted more republican, though Juneau has been strongly democratic for many years. Interestingly, the heavily native North Slope of Alaska, is the most incumbent-biased region of the US, swinging heavily to Obama 2012 and Trump 2020.
Partly due to increased educational polarisation, republican margins have significantly shrunk in Anchorage and Fairbanks, but they continue to lead in the state primarily due to massive leads in the ultra-conservative Matanuska-Susitna Valley, which qualifies as urban by Alaskan standards.
@@kkmac7247 As you said, Juneau has been Democratic for a long while, partly because it is the state capital and thus it has a lots of governmental jobs. It should also be noted, that Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau are the only places where the University of Alaska has campuses and thus has a number of young Alaskans live.
Mat-Su which includes the cities of Palmer and Wasilla, are really bedroom suburbs of Anchorage, helped by the fact that residential taxes are much lower then Anchorage and a fair short [by Alaskan standards] distance (Wasilla is only 50 miles away on the AK1). Hence they are popular with families and are typical American suburban in outlook.
@@philipbranco9568 That’s very interesting. I’m not from Alaska but I find the politics of the state quite fascinating, beyond the irregular geographic distribution of democrats to republicans, the state also has a much less partisan political culture, and a greater focus on the individual candidates, which I think would do a lot of good for many places across the US (and beyond).
I wonder how greatly state capitals align with increased democratic vote shares outside of Juneau though, considering places like Bismarck and Little Rock are quite republican (even relative to similarly sized towns in the same state). I wonder if there is something else specific about Juneau that makes it particularly democratic (high levels of unionisation?)

In my experience, Alaskans can't be easily labelled "Conservative." They are still a frontier people, similar in many ways to Canadians in their belief in strong individualism combined with a "help your neighbors" emotional substrate, and a rejection of conformity. Nobody in Alaska freaks out because somebody has purple hair. This is nothing like the Suburban Fat Slob Conservatism that you get in the Lower 48. Alaskans may quite easily decide that the Dems are a better fit with their attitudes than the GOP which deals entirely in fear and religious conformity. Alaskans aren't really into fear and nobody ever got away with telling them what to believe about religion. Also, they know perfectly well that Russia right across the Bering Straight from them is not their pal.

Alaska has a massive gender imbalance. Something like 110 men for every 100 women. Men vote conservative more than women do.
Also, Alaska is libertarian more than religious. It’s one of the least religious states in America. If Trump alienates too many libertarian voters with his tariffs, restrictions on free speech, etc. then losing Alaska is possible.

If Alaska and Texas come between 3-5% and Trump loses in battleground states, GOP would really have to rethink their entire status-quo..
They've already been rethinking. They know they're ever less likely to win due to demographics and such, so they're all in on gerrymandering, voter suppression, discrediting elections and committing coups.
They were told by their own internal report to rethink after the Obama defeats. What did they do? They did the opposite and went with Trump and MAGA. In some red states the GOP are internally divided with the old guard vs the new crazy MAGA taking over.
GOP is gaining a little with asian, latinos and black voters as well as male voters. Democrats will hand some of those voters to them. So it should even out some.
The GOP already has. That's why so many endorse Kamal. There's the uniparty and then there's populists. Sucks that Trump is the embodiment of that currently but the GOP primaries are more fair so it's easier to change that party.

@@mexicanopdbranked choice applies to her race, but not the president. So unfortunately Trump could still win with under 50%
California while democrats have a monopoly on state and federal elections, California politics is still quite interesting. California has the most republican voters as Orange County and San Diego county have many conservative, red cities and SD county has a conservative region north inland and all of eastern side. OC is having a huge identity crisis as the coastal cities are quite conservative being the only conservative region on the coast in CA and yes there are rural/remote county far north that is red but they have sea cliffs not beaches. OC has democrats north east but heavily republican in most of the county, Irvine used to be a republican leaning city not too long ago and still has a Republican representing it and had a Republican mayor in the pandemic and today Irvine is trending Democratic because of the controversy statements from Republican lawmakers. Huntington beach is basically little Florida when it comes to politics this is a place where surfer dudes hate abortion.
Thanks to Republican governor Pete Wilson in the 90s, voters pretty much are allergic to conservative politicians. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a Republican governor but a very centrist that favored the Democratic majority in the legislature more than half of the time. He was popular until republicans nationwide brought horrible performances like economic meltdown in 2008 and since 2011, democrats have had a monopoly on state politics executive and state legislature. In 2016 they expanded their majority into supermajority and in 2020, about 80% are democratic making the Republican Party very out of touch to the point where even an independent beat a republican in a general election. It’s very clear that the GOP needs to change just for California. Despite democrats having no opposition in every major city since 2020 when SD mayor Kevin falconer left, people are still frustrated with the incumbents in office and have no interest in changing parties as the GOP still don’t want to adjust and take advantage of the slow performance. The state dislikes the GOP so much that the state rather have an unethical Democrat than a Republican in any important office. The state republicans clearly needs to change to be more centrist option as Democrats n have been more centrist in the suburbs and are starting to win nearby rural areas so the GOP might actually be the problem
15% =/= 5%
As an Alaskan, I always click on these videos with a lot of fear but you guys managed to pull this off! If I can finish this video with only a few minor quibbles then well done!
An important nuance of our Ranked choice system is that candidate ranking only comes into effect if no candidate gets at least 50%. Since ranked choice voters can choose their preferred candidate with less consequence, voters for RFK jr could still select him as his first choice and potentionally sink Trump's ability to secure the 50% needed to avoid a ranked choice virtual run-off. While it's very unlikely that Harris could come out on top if ranked choice were to come into play or Trump would get less than 50%, it's still a scenario worth considering, especially in future cycles. A democrat from California has a pretty low chance of flipping our state, but a candidate with a rural background with greater sensitivity to the outside presence of the Federal government plays in our state might have a good shot in the future.
Also, there are some pretty significant issues with your summary on the population of Alaska during the Russian/US Colonial periods. The land wasn't ''empty" and your population estimate seems to focus on just counts of new settlers in the state. While there aren't reliable estimates to my knowledge of the Idigenous population during these periods, it's important to acknowledge their presence and describe which population you're talking about. It is a very sensitive issue and I would just urge avoiding terminology that unwittingly promotes the erasure of Indigenous people and the colonial mindset of empires of the past.
6:12 Didn’t R.F.K. Jr. drop out and endorse Trump a month ago?

To be fair, those nations were incredibly small in terms of population by today's standards.
The concept of nation state didn’t exist there. If you want them to be accurate, you should try it first
Your own response proves their point- they were referring to Alaska's productive value and it's value in sale at that time. It's obvious hyperbole to say that it was empty, if they were to spend all their time referring to everything in Alaska, that would compromise an entirely different (and much longer) video. And that aside, as you acknowledge in your own phrasing, these were indigenous nations, producing and living for themselves. They didn't provide value for Russia, nor for the United States at the time of the Alaskan purchase, because they were independent peoples, living in a vast land and we're hence obviously not a primary consideration in the purchasing of the land at that time. You can argue that it was wrong for the people of the time to not consider the natives, and nobody would disagree, it was the 1800's, but it's disingenuous to imply that the TLDR writers are saying native nations didn't exist. They just weren't of strategic importance to Russia or America at that time, and hence weren't the focus of a brief historical overview of the Russian and American perspectives on the Alaskan Purchase.

Yes, but it's only a few. Democrats really experienced their "big loss" in 2016. Ohio is now a firm red state and Michigan is a battleground state (1 GOP win since 1992). In the near future, New Hampshire and statewide Maine could be an issue for the Democratic Party. But generally, their other safe states are likely to remain safe.

Alaska voting blue is an absolute rarity. Been that way since it became a US state in 1959. Only time it went blue was when it voted for LBJ in ‘64.
I honestly don’t see it happening in this year’s election, or any other election in the near future. In the further future, perhaps, but as for now, it’s merely a fantasy.

I think Alaska could go blue in the presidential race. Down ballot is far less likely. They have a significant population that is very conservative and fairly religious. They may vote the "Not Trump" option that just happens to be called "Harris".
Okay cool, but Alaska has three electoral votes. Republicans should be much more worried about their margins in Texas shrinking. As they go below five percent in Texas, Republicans will have to campaign more and more in what used to be one of their stalwart states, meaning they won't be able to campaign as much in the many other states they need to win. Hopefully this trend continues.

I have family in Anchorage. I've been up every 2-3 years since about 2008, and the influx of new residents is extremely visible over time. Peltola is in a very close race and the enthusiasm among Alaska Dems new and old has been huge and visible. That enthusiasm mixed with the ticket change from Biden to Harris (and especially Tim Walz) could end up having a huge impact even if the state doesn't flip in the presidential race. Alaska is a lot more socially liberal than conservative and the "mind your own business" message of the Harris campaign resonates strongly up there.
Anyone voting for Harris is an idiot. If Alaska goes blue, then they deserve to get sold back to Russia.
ironic. "Mind your own business, but don't mind it if I destroy your neighborhood, don't mind it if i tax you more, don't mind it if I destroy your economy, don't mind it if my illegals come and vandalize your property."

It's so refreshing to think that most states' electoral trends are moving towards blue, makes me feel optimistic for the USA's future💙
They aren't. Some states have gotten redder. The future is red for most states. If you look at projected population changes in 2040 for the US states it's depressing. Blue voters concentrate into 8 states such that half the population resides there. That is great for the presidency as they alone can virtually decide the president. That will doom them so badly in the senate they might not even be able to filibuster since it leaves many states red since the minorities, educated and more mobile youth who move tend to lean blue.
Without the senate the entire Supreme Court could be republican nominees, democrat presidents won't even be able to get their cabinet confirmed. Eventually democrats will hand the presidency to republicans but it is less likely for the senate to flip. So GOP can fill all vacancies they held up for that time.
At that point, democrats will wish they were more supportive of states rights.
@@theuglykwan 1) trends and facts deny your claims 2) states' rights to do WHAT, exactly?
@theuglykwan that was a long rant of misinformation
@@tommasoastaldi2513 1) Yeah cos notice how democrats went from near exclusive control of the entirety of congress between 1930s to 1990s, with often sizeable majorities if not supermajorities to now needing the VP to break a tie in the senate. Even as recent as Obama's first term they briefly had a filibuster proof majority in the senate.
Countless states that previously returned democrat senators are now red eg. WV, ND, AR, OH, MT, ID, SD, IA, MO.
AZ, GA and TX are getting less red. However, population projections for the midwest show most of them stagnate in population which tends to mean they go red.
2) States rights to decide more things for themselves. At least then blue states could maintain their way of life instead of dreaming of a filibuster proof trifecta to enact their policies or undo the ones GOP pass when they have a trifecta. Reproductive rights would be safer in the hands of the people of the states. While it was a setback when Roe was overturned, the courts were previously going for death by a thousand cuts. Now a bunch of red states have outright banned it or close to it. The people have voted against stringent bans in states they got the chance. If it was all down to federal govt, with the courts in the hands of GOP, the situation could be dire nationwide.

Oh well. As I said in 2016: Don't come crying to me saying you didn't see Trump's victory coming.
I suspect it's channel bias or there actually falling for the whole manufactured enthusiasm for Harris in the media. Many are pretty keen on ignoring that she's the worst polling democrat since John Kerry
I mean it's just asking a hypothetical, and it didn't actually say Alaska would go blue. I don't see anything wrong with exploring some of the states less talked about in the ordinary news cycle, because even though states like Alaska aren't as important in this election as states like Pennsylvania or Arizona, changing trends and demographics should still be examined even if they're not quite at a critical level.
I mean Trump only won Texas by 5.5%, it was the 9th closest state in the race, and it’s been trending blue for a long time now.
The Texas trend is way more believable and way more relevant. I don’t think Trump will have trouble in Texas, but Ted Cruz definitely will.

Exactly
Glad I’m not the only one who noticed.
Tl;dr no. Also it’s worth 3 ec points, so practically useless either way.
in an election where the current projected winner has like 276 electoral votes any additional one is welcome.
If polling is accurate, this could be one of the two elections this century where AK could potentially swing the win from one party to the other. The other election being George W Bush vs AL Gore in 2000. But in that race AK was much more solidly for the Republican ticket. This race less so but as a resident of Anchorage I'd still say it's unlikely. Though if the Democrats really wanted to make a play for AK have Harris do a stop here and get Murkowski and Peltoa on a stage endorsing her. That might actually be enough to push AK over to her.
That said, to do that, she'd likely have to be open to leases in ANWAR. Which might alienate more voters than she'd be likely to win in AK. So yeah, seems unlikely.
Would be a dream come true for Alaska to turn blue. 💙

Yes, Alaskan politics fascinate me as well. Just a look at the voting results map by borough indicates that most of the state’s surface area is blue. No other red state is like that; there aren’t even many blue states that are like that.
The Alaska Bush, which is most of western and northern Alaska that is not connected to the road system, strangely votes majority Democratic. It’s mostly native Alaskans who live off the land. I can see where they are coming from. But this is where I have no clue whatsoever how they’re supposed to accurately poll these people.
I think the biggest opportunity for Dems to gain is the Anchorage area which is trending blue, and making collateral gains in suburban Anchorage, especially in the Mat-Su borough (Palmer/Wasilla) which has remained a GOP stronghold in spite of most mainland suburban areas trending toward the Democrats.
