Eisenerz is a town with around 3500 inhabitants in the north of Styria (Austria). It lies on the Erzbach in the middle of the rocks of the Eisenerz Alps in the southwest and the Hochschwab in the northeast. The four rock formations of Eisenerzer Reichenstein, Wildfeld, Kaiserschild and Pfaffenstein dominate the cityscape. There are also the reddish colored steps of the Erzberg, which is the largest open-cast iron ore mine in Central Europe.
According to legend, the former residents of the Erzbachtal owe the discovery of the Erzberg to a waterman (seen in the video?). He was captured by them with a coat smeared with pitch. In exchange for his release he then offered them the following:
- gold for 10 years,
- silver for a hundred years
or iron forever.
The residents chose iron.
Lake Leopoldstein is located in the north of the municipality.
Eisenerz ist eine Stadt mit ca 3500 Einwohnern im Norden der Steiermark (Österreich). Sie liegt am Erzbach inmitten der Felsen der Eisenerzer Alpen im Südwesten und des Hochschwab im Nordosten. Die vier Felsformationen von Eisenerzer Reichenstein, Wildfeld, Kaiserschild und Pfaffenstein dominieren das Stadtbild. Dazu kommen die rötlich gefärbten Stufen des Erzbergs, der der größte Eisenerz-Tagbau Mitteleuropas ist.
Der Sage nach verdanken die ehemaligen Einwohner des Erzbachtals die Entdeckung des Erzberges einem Wassermann (gesehen im Video?). Er wurde von ihnen mit einem mit Pech bestrichenen Mantel eingefangen. Für seine Freilassung bot er ihnen dann Folgendes an:
- Gold für 10 Jahre,
- Silber für hundert Jahre
oder Eisen für immer.
Die Einwohner entschieden sich für das Eisen.
Im Norden des Gemeindegebietes liegt der Leopoldsteiner See.
