  • Made a bunch of recordings to showcase the differences of 5 mics for voiceovers: The Rode NT1, Rode NT1A - Sterling Audio ST55, Sennheiser MKH 416 and Electro-Voice RE320. Used a DBX 286s and Aphex Channel for some of the recordings. Also used a Behringer Xenyx Q1202 mixer and WavePad software for Normalization on other recordings.

So I have a sennheiser MK416 and building a lil studio what audio interface would you suggest? Or just in general what would be a good combo for it (Also any boom arm suggestions for it , it'd be on a desk) I SHOULD mention a cheap studio as I just do live streams with it but plan to do voice overs eventually.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Rode PSA-1 boom is what I use.

The ending of this video had me cackling like an old witch. BEST REVEAL EVER! IMO the Sennheiser sounded the best :)

Hey! I am considering to get the Aphex 230, I already have the dbx286s and a Audio mixer with built in audio interface (but it only have 16 bit sound) And I want 24bit, therefore Aphex 230. is it worth it?

I have the 'Aphex Channel' and not the 230 but I think they are pretty similar. All I can say I've kept my Aphex Channel and have no intentions of selling it in the near future.

Great comparison and video. What were the settings you used on the Sterling ST55? Thanks!

Thank you, but I do not remember the settings I used on the ST55, sorry. It's been a while since I made that video. As far as EQ goes, it was probably flat.

Interesting test, thank you.All great mics. I listened to the "pure" test a couple of times (applying EQ etc changes a lot). The Sennheiser is the clear winner, which does not surprise me. Superb clarity out of the box. I also liked the NT1, which sounded a bit dull, but it was so flat all across the spectrum that I might give you the chance to EQ it to best match your voice. The.other two mikes were okay, but nothing like the Sennheiser. I did not really like the NT1A, cannot really say why, it somehow sounded lower quality than the rest of the bunch. Then came your EQs changing things around a bit. The Sennheiser was still the best to my ears, but I would have picked C, and surprisingly the NT1A. Your EQ did wonders to that mic. I am not sure whether your EQ settings for the NT1 are indeed the best for your voice, but probably it is just that it immediately followed the Sennheiser 416 and whatever mic would follow it would just be a drop in.perceived clarity and crispness.:)

I'd say very subjective. I think 5 sounded best. Rhode.

You may have just convinced me to NOT go buy a new microphone. The one I already own surprised me in your test. I think I just need to get to know it better. I will give it another chance. Thanks
Must also say - very satisfying test - very well done.

Yep, microphones/audio can be funny like that. Come back to something after several months and your opinion can change.
