I wonder if you could add a stiffener by doing a carbon fiber or fiberglass layup around the perimeter. I'm sure even a layer or two would increase stiffness substantially
I love the project! I wouldn’t use CF in plastic that touches the lines, its abrasive nature could damage them over time. Look forward to seeing version two
@@CalebJohnsonlivingca I've been looking at Al using 3D printed parts only for some of the joints on the cage, but there are a very limited range of Al streamlined extrusions out there (Wicks Aircraft). If the hoop flex can be reduced, this becomes a really intriguing option. BTW, really loved the integral netting loops you did!
Thank you for you honest design debrief 😄🙏 I have built a cage for an electric paramotor and can support everything you mentioned. The big prop sounds very quiet, is that correct or just the audio?
Great work!!!! I am also making my on main frame with carbon fiber tubes. I am planning to use 16mm diameter tubes. What diameter and thickness tubes did you use? Is tha main rami strong enough? For the engne support I am planning to use carbonfiber plate but I see you are using aluminium. Why? Do you think that CB plate wont be strong enough to mount the engine? Is there any chance that I could buy you the 3D printed joints and make the frame the same as yours? For the ring or cage, I am planning to use titanium 12mm diameter tube. Thanks for sharing and looking forward for your opinion on my CB frame project ;)
My frame used 14mm (2mm wall) tubes. If I did it again, I'd bump them up to at least 16mm.... maybe even just go with 20mm with 1mm wall? I used the aluminum for two reasons: 1) SendCutSend will cut complex shapes for me and thread the holes. 2) I was concerned about vibration fatigue. The plates I ordered ended up being WAY overkill. You could lift a truck with the 7075 plates. Unless you can already weld titanium, I'd just go with aluminum; that's my plan for v2. Don't build my exact design, it had lots of issues, some big and some small.
Love this, Caleb! Looking forward to seeing more!
Absolutely awesome! This is why I love FAR 103. I have a welder and a machine shop, sure wish we could have collaborated!
@@YankeeinSC1 next version is aluminum... I'm gonna start learning soon.
@@CalebJohnsonlivingca Aluminium? Why not CB again?
Awesome video. Would like to see more on your next version.

@@fgbhrl4907 on the printed parts? I was considering it for v2, but I'm just gonna jump to aluminum.
seems like it is much quieter with that big prop.

@@ryankeating5473 indeed, it was much more abrasive than I expected.
i'm not an engineer or anything but what if it were coated with acrylic or something?
@@nindoninshu I did experiment a little with acrylic paint actually. It sorta works, but the plastic still needs sanded first which makes a huge mess.
@@CalebJohnsonlivingca ahh fair enough, makes sense
not sure if id trust where the swing arms are mounted but other than that, it looks wicked!!
so freakin cool! stoked to follow the changes.
Incredible attempt.
Awesome, currently building my own.
Hope to see more.
Absolutely brilliant, Caleb! Gave me lots of ideas for my current trike build :) Thank you. Roll on V2!
@@rbtkraisee7380 if weight is less important for you, going composites like this might be much more viable.

concept success, and good iterative design step forward. Congrats again on holding the record for largest foot-launch prop ever flown, lol!
This is BA! Nicely done!
New sub! Congrats on your project!
Brains AND balls!
Sick!!
There are a lot of people on this planet who are smarter than me. You, sir, are definitely on that list.
This is awesome, congrats! How did the overall weight compare?
Great proof of concept project Caleb! How much reduction in fuel consumption and propeller noise?
Just bought a 3d printer plan to build my own as well

How many hours of printing was required?
@@paramotortheory about two weeks. To prevent warping, I printed these slooooow.
Well done man! Were the swing arms printed and everything? Please tell me you’re flying with a reserve though 🙏
