@@hypercomms2001 Traditional ferries also operate between the mainland and the Isle of Wight. Hovercraft offer speed.
the british contribution to transport was the hovercraft but its not really practical.
Hovercrafts were the western competitor to ekranoplans as the dumbest means of transportation.
Hovercraft are infinitely more useful than ekranoplans.
For the military they are perfect.
