"Lazy Lester was a big influence on my harp playing growing up, perhaps surprisingly, since we have such different styles. I saw him play live at Riffs Bar in Swindon when I was about 16, bought his album and used to play along to it and try to emulate his style. I love his tone, groove and simple yet solid & impactful phrasing. Today would have been his 88th birthday so I am posting this video in his memory. Happy birthday Lester!"

Some really niiiiiiice Lazy Lester harp phrasing! He was a big influence on my early harp playing, as was Snooky Pryor, & Sonny Boy Williamson I, among others...

Did I tell you Lazy Lester spent several nights sleeping in a big thick chair in my home in New Orleans back in '88? Then we'd go down to the Hummingbird an all night diner Lee Circle, and Lester would eat Boudin sausage. I was playing Harp with Eddie Burns from Detroit where Lester was also living. So they knew each other, had the same manager probably why Lester who was in town for gigs was staying with me.
He truly had that lazy, greasy fat way
way of playing "Swamp Blues."

Excellent video Will! I first heard about Lazy Lester from a friend of mine - Marcus the Carcass - from the A-Bones. He told me John Lennon used some of Lazy's licks. I love the swampy acoustic style.
