Not sure about the 100km on electric, I've watched a NZ review where he made 88km on full electric before the motor cut in, but that was a pre-production vehicle. But honestly say 80 is still very impressive for day to day driving. We're looking at buying a twin cab next year and this would have to be on the list
@@grointastic4242BYD is currently selling the Shark at cost or below, so that's why they chose to use fewer Blade modules for this vehicle (battery is 60% of the vehicle's cost). The Shark would be something like 80k AusD with 300 km battery range.
I bought my 2007 SR5 Hilux new, and have loved it all that time. About 5 years ago i was going to trade up, but the new Hilux wasn't that impressive and the price was crazy, not to mention the waiting time. So i decided to see how the battery and hydrogen market evolved. Toyota took a gamble on hydrogen and failed, because the infrastructure required wasn't ready. BYD recognised this and came up with the perfect solution, and then coupled that with a good looking ute with great technology. They've also got a good track record with the sedans, and have used that to set up their Australian service network. Consider the fact that they are selling the shark for less than cost, and that should help the 2025 shark hold it's value going forward. My old Hilux is still in pretty good shape, but in my mind the time to take the innovation leap is now.
Still driving my trusty 2009 Hilux, but realizing that a replacement is due sometime. This truck has definitely caught my attention. It looks like we will be getting them in South Africa soon.
3500 max weight 2710 curb (assume dry) 60 fuel 170 humans (2 adults, 1 child) and carry on 80 front bar 25 rack 80 canopy 415kg 2710+415 =3125 375 remaining for payload and towball 200kg towball weight for 2t trailer (atm) 175kg remaining for gear in the tub. Not complaining, just running my numbers. Anyone disagree or see an issue with that? Can’t find GCM anywhere, but I’d assume 500kg left with the above scenario.
Hi Felix, am also very curious about the apparent 2700kg of the BYD Shark and what it is able to carry. Like you, not out to be critical and merely devil's advocate more so. Joined the BYD Shark group yesterday out of interest and prospective owners are definitely motivated to run numbers too. Our full time touring Musso is 2110kg dry and when trip ready with ball weight she's 60kg off the 3200kg mark. That's with alloy tray and canopy rather than tub. And in speaking recently with another full time tourer (we're about to start the grain harvest here in S.A.) his DMax is also close to its 3200kg gvm with all necessary bits to support full time work/travel. By the time we calculate your solid estimate, plus add drawer system, packed 40ltr fridge, 20ltrs of water, a side awning, camp chairs and other camp gear for just a long weekend the potential limits of the Shark as more so a "weekend warrior" and less so full time tourer are drawn into focus.
@@nathankelly1708yeah there’s no harm with it being that role either as you said. I’m a numbers guy so I like running a scenario just to see how it actually goes rather than a quick mention. Build lightness. I was a surveyor all over central Oz and the top end, in all seasons, 90kkm pa on all types of roads, but much of it was on barely tracks on privately owned land. Had 2x 80 series and 2 GU Patrols is various configuration, plus various hire 4x4s and loaner troopys. Build lightness. After day 2 you will regret driving an overweight whale. Alloy roo bar, no RTT, alloy rack. Can you get by without a winch, ie, use a Tirfur instead. No draws - just dont add drawers = unnecessary kgs. GUs had a surprisingly low GVM and with a steel roo bar, winch, rear step and steel rack, with 2x 100kg blokes + full fuel, on the weigh bridge in Alice there was only 150kgs legal allowance left, eg, the fridge + lunch plus a few beers, let alone everything else. Thus we legally had to tow a lightweight alloy box trailer. Just build lightness.

Hey mate , with the canopy I'm guessing the back window from inside the car can't open to let aircon through the canopy ? Just because people have dogs which we take camping. Makes no sense to have a dog inside there with all windows shut off suffocating in hot air.
Its about time, this is just the beginning, quite exciting future ahead. Thanks for the review, will be interesting to see how it tows a caravan. I think the big players have lost the plot.
Looks good with a bit of brawn added, and that canopy top is tidy as (but clearly about as dust proof as a fly screen door......! Certainly a nicer looking build compared to the clearly in-bred buck-toothed sister kissing Tasman
Love the look of this . Questions- how was the range with the accessories and change in tyres? There appeared to be lots of dust in tray area, do seals need modifying or is this still a test range? I am going to look at one this week.
Hi Titan, I can at least let you know that moving from the road going tyres on our Musso at delivery to a slightly taller A/T (same width) tyre definitely had an impact on fuel economy. And in considering specifically the Cooper ST Maxx for our ute they are indeed a heavy tyre due to their ply rating and construction. A good tyre and kudos to BYD for the instant move to an R/T (rugged terrain for those unfamiliar) but any claimed range on the standard Shark will be reduced by tyres alone, let alone further accessories.
Would have loved to have heard more about how to manage the range. Do we need to plug in after a few hundred k's? If so be no good for long trips. Also, what about locking the diffs? Is there a diff lock on the back? Need to wait for non sponsored videos to review this in the outback
The engine supplies power once the battery is low, so youre burning fuel at that point. There are no diff lockers required because there's no rear axle.
Apparently the water immersion issues were sorted out well before the shark, but in saying that will Toyota cover you for drowning your hilux on the beach? BYD report the water depth as 700mm.
I'm one of those annoying people who requires the road to be more than simply unsealed to be offroad. I'm most worried about the extra weight of the battery making getting bogged in mud more common
Yeah I lived in Broken HIll. The country side around there is mostly flat, dry and rocky. Bring the Shark to the Top End or FNQ in the wet and lets see what it is really capable of.
I wonder if it can still be locked in 4H when the battery is depleted, the combined kW figure means the engine is driving the wheels and not a generator alone, but with the battery in the middle of the chassis the electric motor is all that can drive the rear wheels
The battery needs to be double the size to make it useful. Not enough range in this vehicle. Where are you going to go camping??? In your backyard??? Seems a waste of a good vehicle.
@@grointastic4242 It has a reported 800km range; but that will be using fuel most of the way. Seems its mostly aimed at tradies and the quick trip out of town.
Awesome Review! Can't wait for mine! Couple questions.. 1. What happens when the battery runs flat/low.. does the power get restricted to keep up with the generator? 2. Does it come with tailgate seal kit. There wasn't an option to add it but looks like you got a bit dusty in the back so I'm assuming no? 3. Does the roof rack come standard with the lights? Thanks again! Keep up the good work :)
1. What happens when the battery runs flat/low.. does the power get restricted to keep up with the generator? -- the system will keep 20-25% of capacity. If you are on highway, just drive, the engine will recharge the battery automatically. If you are doing serious off-road trip, I suggest park you car and let the engine to recharge the battery for 30 minutes.
@@liuyangyang But what if it can't? or does the generator just rev up more and use more petrol? So basically im asking if the generator can keep up charging the battery while giving you full 320kw all the time until the petrol runs out? Thats great if thats the case..

I've seen that the Mexican version has a retractable step in the tailgate for stepping up onto the back. I wonder why we didn't get that version in the Australian version?!
Chasing answers on a couple of points. Does it have a dash cam charge point on rear view mirror? Or does the cameras record Tesla style? And does it come standard with towbar?
The red dust in the tub 5.15. Not sealed very well. I hope the accessories are improved in the future , not what you need pulling up at camp having to clean that off your gear
don't quote me, but the addition of a bullbar doesn't add much weight as the material that needs to be removed accounts for a fair bit of the weight of the bullbar. the other additions, no idea.
Having fitted many a bullbar it wouldn't be hard to add 70-90kg for bar alone, canopy if aluminium maybe 45-60kg depending on thickness and reinforced areas, rack could at least be 30kg.
@@nathankelly1708 fortunately it's an Aluminium bar. I'd prefer a steel bar, but that would eat into your payload. I have an Everest which actually has a similar payload to the Shark, but I've had a GVM upgrade. It's not clear if GVM upgrades will be available for the Shark.
@@BrianRaynor alloy bar is a good idea for the front. Imagine someone will be keen to work out an upgrade. Have found quite a few Musso SWB owners that are content with their 790kg payload and a lot of them, whether in mid or top spec, don't seem to carry much at all and choose to do more towing than carrying if they are put to work. Looks magnificent. The only thing that would have been good to cover is how well it drives with a decent load on the back. But based on everything else I've seen and read I'd guess it'd be solid.
Great advertorial. Will be interesting to see more independent takes on the softroading this is capable of.
I've got an Atto 3 and it is top quality. So the brand is solid, just a matter of whether this model is up to that level at launch or whether it takes a year to bed in the new model and tunnings. I want one, I reckon the demand will be big.
Real Australian environmental review. Thanks.
Not sure about the 100km on electric, I've watched a NZ review where he made 88km on full electric before the motor cut in, but that was a pre-production vehicle. But honestly say 80 is still very impressive for day to day driving. We're looking at buying a twin cab next year and this would have to be on the list
I think that 88km was only down to 26% of battery
I think it really failed on the battery on this. It needs 300klms range at a minimum
@@grointastic4242BYD is currently selling the Shark at cost or below, so that's why they chose to use fewer Blade modules for this vehicle (battery is 60% of the vehicle's cost). The Shark would be something like 80k AusD with 300 km battery range.

With the extra weight of the bullbar and accessories, along with the extra rolling resistance of those tyres it would be less on this one for sure.

Questions- how was the range with the accessories and change in tyres?
There appeared to be lots of dust in tray area, do seals need modifying or is this still a test range?
I am going to look at one this week.
I’m keen to know that as well. I will likely get one of those bullbars, but may consider the raid one of the big boi hooped one is made of full steel.
It's range is 850km+ without stopping.
“I’m shocked at how little the vibrations are entering the cabin” - camera cuts to the screen and steering wheel shaking to bits! 😂
Could you plonk some solar on top to recharge the battery when out touring, instead of using too much fuel?
Does it have anchor points for children's seats in the back?
Yes.
I think byd have absolutely knocked it out of the park with the shark.
I think they have already done that by Seal and Atto 3, but Shark is definitely a cherry on top for the moment.
ordered one today arrives in march well see how it goes. very exited!
Also How dust proof is the canopy? It doesn't look good.
Looks like the rear canopy does not seal very well - lots of dust visible inside.
So, how is the warranty if you go through water, and maximum allowable depth please?

As an off-road vehicle, this thing chews up juice so what is the point of it?
What payload is left after adding the bullbar, roof rack and canopy?
don't quote me, but the addition of a bullbar doesn't add much weight as the material that needs to be removed accounts for a fair bit of the weight of the bullbar. the other additions, no idea.
payload is Achilles heel. Need GVM upgrade option for family of 5
Having fitted many a bullbar it wouldn't be hard to add 70-90kg for bar alone, canopy if aluminium maybe 45-60kg depending on thickness and reinforced areas, rack could at least be 30kg.
With having been on the road for 18 months I've noticed quite a few caravan haulers that are predominantly bare-bones cars or utes with hardly anything in their load spaces.
I wonder if these can run a tray/canopy setup
