    I am 45 years old but I have to say Smiley Bates brings back many great memories.My fiance is 55 and he is just not into this music.I remember on Saturdays here in Corner Brook,Newfoundland,Canada,myself and my Dad would dance in our kitchen to his songs.We would also dance to Hank Williams Sr,Hank Snow,Johnny Cash,Merle Haggard and Gene Watson.I also loved Johnny Horton.Whenever I hear these songs,great memories would surface which would bring a smile to my face and tears to my eyes,remembering my Dad and all the good times we would have.I also remember my friends would all go to the mall on Saturday afternoon but I didn't and the reason was I just wanted to stay home and dance with my Dad.Some of my friends would find that it was weird and some did not.The ones who did laugh at me are the ones today that when we see each other they always say they wish they had those times back so they could spend some time doing something with their parents.I miss my Dad so much and I still love listening to the old Country Music Stars.Sorry I need a tissue.

    When I was about 8 years old, I lived in Kirkland Lake. The television station there had a childrens' program on Saturdays called "Kiddies On Camera" My mother would dress me up, do my hair and take be down there to sing. Smiley Bates would back up anyone that wanted to sing with his guitar. I'll never forget this, it was 60 years ago.

    I had the great fortune of playing with him at two festivals. Powassan Fiddling contest and Shelburne. I played 5 string Banjo and met him in the park where he asked me to join him on stage. Was an amazing feeling to be on stage with him and i still remember the smile he gave me when I played a break in one of the tunes. Thank you Sir, for the memories!!

    This is a good version. RIP Grandpa Dehart. If anyone reads my comment. Grandpa Dehart used to take me to bluegrass fiddle contests in the 1990s. He died on June 11, 1997. I was the last person to see him alive. I woke him up as he was sleeping and left his house after about 1:30pm. My grandma came home an hour later and he was dead. I always beleived I scared him when I woke him up and killed him. I still beleive it. My family all went to hell, after he died. I never married or had chikdren. If there was anyone I ever actually did love, it was him.

      Smiley Bates was born Harvey Bates in Kirkland Lake Ontario in 1937 and died in Bent River Ontario in 1997. A lot of people seem to think he was born in the maritimes, I don't know why.

    • @Garr1984
      @Garr1984 10 лет назад +1

      tooez90 I would guess that people think Smiley Bates was a Maritimer because his music was always very popular down east. Smiley's Idol, Hank Snow, was from Nova Scotia, and Smiley's music always had that "Pure Country" sound that people in the Maritimes seem to love.

      Susan Broomfield Mac Wiseman a blue Grass mucian I believed that wrote it. The song is based on a true event that happened somewhere in Arkansas. However there are probably similar stories or things like that really happened. it's a tear jerker.
