  • I grow a lot of kale and I often get asked how I harvest my kale, and what I do with all that kale. In this video I talk about that a bit, and then show how I harvest my kale in a way that ensures a steady supply right up until the ground starts to freeze.

    Help!! I have a problem with my Russian kale. Several of my plants are dying because the stem has a rotten mushy place. I have been harvesting leaves since March. I also have some worms but not the green ones. They are darker with a yellowing stripe. Slugs have also found the kale. I am going to use BT on them after picking them off. I've had that happen too - and for some reason it can spread to most of them. It's some mind of pest. I think the affected plants are doomed. Pull them out roots and all, and then treat the ones that are still good with an insecticidal soap once a wee for a few weeks and see how that goes. Absolutely do not plant kale anywhere near that spot for a couple year :)

    Can you expound a bit on why pick in the morning? I ask because with hay, it's best cut late afternoon because it's been photosynthesising all day. This means the total digestible nutrients (AKA TDN) are highest late afternoon, so you are storing hay with the best nutrient level it can have since at night the plant is using up the sugars it created during the day.
    Having said that, mostly I cut in the morning due to scheduling and/or weather concerns, and I can see that with you it works out better with being away at a job during the day and wanting to have the start of your evening and meal preparation go smoothly.
    I know it's something like a percentage point or two of TDN, if I remember correctly, so not really a big deal for most purposes, but you've mentioned it several times about harvesting in the morning and I was wondering if there is a plant physiology reason for a morning harvest?

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887  5 лет назад

      The plants are at their best in the morning because they've had the whole evening to recover, re-hydrate and grow - that's it - and it's also cool outside, and the horse-flies are not around yet at that point in the day. That's it. Hay is cut in late afternoon because it's very dry at that point in the day. If it's not dry when it's bailed up it will rot.

    • @NewYorkJennifer
      @NewYorkJennifer 5 лет назад +1

      @@maritimegardening4887 Hay is generally baled in late afternoon because it's dry after being cut a day or two before and it's had a good sunny day or two to dry. When you cut is a function of how wet the hay is (rain the night before, heavy dew, etc), and what the weather looks like for next day or two, and if you intend to rake or ted it. It's true you can't bale wet hay or it will heat too much and rot--- or burn your barn down through spontaneous combustion.
      I don't think too many people realize that a bale is not simply dry hay just as it came out of the baler. When baled, it goes through a curing process where it heats through bacterial action before it cools down to its final state. It is a mild process for the most part unless you baled it too wet, nothing too noticeable unless you break open a bale to feel the heat which lasts for a few days following baling. You will also smell hay as it's curing. You can drive by hay barns in the summer and smell freshly put up hay. Which is a different smell from freshly mowed hay.
      Will get off my hobby horse now. :) I'm in the middle of haying right now since it's such a late year.

      @@maritimegardening4887I used to go to a big farmers market on Saturdays in the parking lot of the center mall. During summers alot of local fruit and produce was available in large quantities. I remember working on the farms as a kid picking Cherry's in Grimsby and peaches as well. Not many fruit tree farms left on Niagara Peninsula now. Alot have been converted to wine grapes and the rest into suburbs, big shame.

    Do the plants have to be

    Doesn't freezing vegetables kill the living enzymes?

      It depends on the enzyme. Some can take it and some can't. The ecology here freezes every winter - if that killed all the enzymes it would be a wasteland right :)

    You've got what other poeple would pack into 5 videos here... I love the Stoic... just... "here ya go" attitude with the gardening knowledge and skills... rather than some "TOP TIP YOU NEED TO KNOW" video..
    Although... if you want to get more views.... I mean... you could split this up into 5 videos and be a hype man... *shrug

    If you walk through a forest with cell phone towers you'll notice the tops of the trees are the dead ones.
