something my Grandfather taught me about chicken roosts. rounded roosts make the toes curve outside of the feathers, in cold weather the toes can freeze. He always put a flat board for them to roost on so they are more protected from the cold.
We used to have chickens in the early 80s. At night they have been been sleeping up on the rods. As soon as the first woke up and went down the chicken ladder it had to jump on a thin wooden board. On the board my father had strings attached for a mechanism and the board in front of the chicken door opened then up automatically, so they could open up for themselves 😃🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥❤
I love the way you edited this video. Really nice. Congrats on your new livestock! I'm going to be curious to see how your floor holds up - so - I'm sure you'll keep us informed as to how all of these materials held up. Very nice to know you will be building a house - very cool!
I love your idea of building a mobile chicken coop on a hayrack frame to help keep your chickens safe from predators ... it's perfect! And your feeding system and laying nests are fabulous too! I don't know if it's something you would be interested in for your chickens, but when we had livestock on our farm we had solar powered watering systems for their water, especially in the winter in Iowa out in the distant pastures. There are different sized waterers, depending on which animals it's for, and the water heater was run by a solar controlled mechanism. When winter arrives, something else you will need for you chickens will be more insulation too, which you may already be aware of ... maybe a healthy layer of straw or other bedding in the nests and on the floor.
Hang a solar light inside the coop. Amazon sells some pendant ones that have a timer to turn on at dusk and will turn off automatically after 30 minutes or more. The light will help them return to roost in the evening. I would suggest you use 2 x 4's for the roosts set so they can sit on the 4" side, keeping their feet warmer instead of the trees.
I know they make chicken water heaters, but not sure if they have a solar one. You may look into a 5 gal bucket for water and installing the red drinking nipples for the birds. Most folks hang the bucket or set it up on a stump. Best of luck to you and your family. I just subscribed
Crikey; 30 chickens are A LOT! Even once you've culled the males you are looking at 20 eggs a day (except during moults). Are you intending to sell eggs? Water will always be a problem. Hens poop everywhere! You'll just need to visit twice daily in cold weather to rinse and fill water bowls/vessels. A flock of chickens is a wonderful little society to watch through the year. I hope you're able to place the coop close enough to your house to be able to observe their daily interactions and their characters. I think you'll grow to love them!
WOW 😲 you did it again! You can build me a house 🏠 I live in Tennessee lol. No jokes you did a spectacular job. You have more talent each time I see you do something I just have to say he did it again.
Oh my have not checked in, in a while. Been into politics too much. (Lot of good thst did me- NOT) Yall definitely have the right idea. Shqueeze your baby he is too cute! Congrats on everything!!!!❤
How are you gonna make the sidding look good for your house? I feel like it would look pretty intense to make your whole house siding out of this material. The roof makes sense to me, but the sides not so much.

Really enjoyed this video. My wife and myself are 73 years old and enjoy seeing your family grow in wisdom and experience. God Bless you!
Jeeeeeeej! I thought I missed this somehow in the previous ones, but the chickens got their own episode.. 😍
I suggest you do rain catchment off the chicken roof and then you have water were ever you move the chicken coop. Looks great xxx
I watch a lot of homesteading channels, and I do believe your chicken coop build is one of the best I've seen.
WOW SO GOOD! You did a fantastic job!
Lou is a modern day Charles Ingalls. Absolutely love your content. Mini stories to escape to.
I love the music you've been selecting for your videos 😊

That turned out soooo good! Definitely giving me ideas for my one day property!
They’re going to need heaters or more insulation in the winter. Even cold hardy breeds like RIRs will want more bedding than that to stay warm
Congratulations on the addition of chickens to your homestead. Best wishes.
Lou your nesting boxes are so cool!

We always put a piece of vinyl on the floor of our chicken house. It made it super easy to clean.
You two are very good and interesting couple. You are blessed 😇😊❤

Great chicken coop love it ❤❤❤
Great soundtrack to this video🔥🔥

Very well thought out!

Very nice video this week

Get the little chicken waters that you screw into a bucket and the chickens peck at them to get the water out.

Nice chicken coop! Question about the metal roof and metal siding. How would they be with heat and cold during seasons?
If you’re eating the eggs, do you want your roosters with the hens?

My husband loves Lou’s sunhat in the beginning of the video! If you remember where it is from, let me know :) ❤
Solar water!!!
So the chickens can open the door by coming close to it. Do you have a a plan for when a predator climbs the ramp?
I wonder if it closes at night and opens in the morning so they are safe from nighttime predators. My brother has one like that.
@ on a timer. I bet it does☺️
Please insolation 😮!
Please a way to clean easily 😊
i like www.youtube.com/@FreeRangeLiving. if i ever buy property i am going to use them as a source of ideas.
