I went to Japan when I was twenty for three week, loved it. One of my highlights was I climbed Mount Fuji with a group of USA & Japanese service personnel, (I’m neither) we spent the night on one of the stops so that we could make it to the top by sun rise. I just made it with a lot of encouragement from the service personals and we lucked out as it was a wonderful clear morning without any mist. This was in 1979, One of the best trips of my life, wonderful and kind people. So I hope Don, that both you and Tony have a wonderful time in Japan with great memories.
A friend of mine was visiting Japan and may have partook in too much saki, went into a store saw someone and proceeded to bow. Each time he bowed, the other person did the same. Only to realize he was bowing to his reflection in a mirror. One of my favourite stories, thanks Bryan.
How funny! My sister did the same in Las Vegas. At the Bellagio casino she saw a woman approaching. She stopped, thinking, oh wow, that woman has beautiful hair...then realized she was looking into a mirror. I like your story even more.
I live in Maine. If you tell me that the Japanese are even nicer than Canadians, I can hardly believe it! Especially Atlantic Canadians. They are the best
After 4 trips to Japan I wholeheartedly agree with you about the pleasant Japanese culture. It's my favorite place to visit. As an instructor in my trade, I see young people eager to learn and ready to work. Very refreshing.
Don, I live in the USA and I've been to Japan many times. The best place to change money is the ATM machines at the 7-11 or the Post Office (7-11 is best). Rates aren't bad and there are 7-11's everywhere in Japan. Just be sure you notify your bank that you plan to use your debit/credit card in Japan so they don't block it. You are correct, the Japanese are so kind and polite and eager to help any way they can. And NO tipping anywhere (taxis, barbers, hotels, restaurants)!!
Jerome O'Mara Then you will be insulting the Japanese, it’s not about money it’s about culture and the giving off tips is deemed demeaning in Japanese culture. Try respecting other people’s cultures and traditions.
I was also impressed on how polite and helpful the people were in Japan. Also was astonished on how clean the streets were as there wasn't any trash on the ground and oddly enough there were no public trash receptacles.
Don, great video. I find Japanese people to be gracious, polite, respectful and accommodating. I really think they are taught this from their parents at home. So glad you are having a vantastic time in Japan.
Lived there as a child (Air Force brat) & have added it to my bucket list to see it as an adult. Never thought of cruising there but now I definitely am! Thanks for the information & have a great trip!
My fiance's niece lives in Japan, she teaches the children the English language. Have a fantastic day Don, and thank you for all you do for us. You look well rested , happy and relaxed. Continued excellent health. 🤗
Watching some older vlogs...Don, I learned a lot from this video. I'm putting Japan on my list of places to go. Thank you for such a thorough review of your experience! Wow!!
Its great to get a special send off....i experienced that in Scotland. We were the last cruiseship there for the season so we had bagpipes and drums playing just before heading out...was amazing.
We lived in Japan for 3.5 years, they’re amazing. I’ve never been pushed into a train but have been really too close for comfort with the other passengers. Very uncomfortable for us. They don’t tip because it’s already included in the price. Japan is expensive and they pay their workers accordingly
The Japanese are very polite and helpful. Giving service to others is part of their culture. They can't do enough for you. I have many Japanese friends in NZ and have had them as guests in my home. They are so grateful for anything you do for them and when they left, they gave me lovely tank you gifts of beer and wine and chocolate and even a fancy bottle of Sake'. They are fun people too and love jokes and humor. As tourists they can't see enough and want to go to every place of interest they can and take lots of photos. I really enjoy their company.
So nice to see civility and politeness. No tipping expected is great. What’s not to love. The cherry blossoms 🌸 are beautiful. Pictures don’t do them justice. I have not been to Japan but I have been to Washington, DC where there is an abundance of cherry blossom trees that the Japanese gave to the US years ago. Just breathtakingly beautiful.
What a great overview, thanks for this, Don! "Fall in love with your toilet"...😂😂😂...I'm crying laughing!!! I wish kids in the USA were as polite as Japanese! Can't wait to see more! Watched Tony catch his ride to China this morning. Stay safe and have a blast!! 💖
Aloha Don, I really enjoy watching you sitting in your cabin talking about the cruise I was on with you. Your cabin is the mirror image of ours - 7154. Your videos bring back great memories. Your tips are exactly what many cruisers need. Happy travels. Keep up the good work 😎
Thanks now I gotta go to Japan. Sounds awesome to go somewhere where your welcomed and don’t have to tip. Takes the awkwardness out of touring. Will start looking at that, Thanks for the heads up.
We were lucky enough to live in Okinawa Japan for a few years. The cherry blossom festival is wonderful and so fragrant. Japanese are polite and giving. Looking forward to more from you Don! Thanks!
I was in Japan in July for 3 weeks and fell in love it. Outside of tourist areas, not much English is spoken but I managed with pointing, using Google translate, or hotels have a translate thingy. I'm going back again soon as I fell in love with someone in Japan!!
@Jerome O'Mara Great ! Thank you. If tips are not expected, I shall no longer leave any. Think of all the money I will save. If asked why, I shall refer to you, Jerome.
Hi, Don. I really enjoy your travel vlogs! I understand from Tony and Jenny's vlog, that you'll be going to Osaka. Such a beautiful city and so clean! If you should use the train system, keep an eye out for the 'women only' cars! Apart from Universal Studios Japan, there is also a wonderful aquarium, Osaka castle and an enormous Ferris wheel! It's a great place to do lots of walking and sight-seeing. Enjoy your trip with Tony! It will be exciting to see the vlogs that come from this trip!
The Japanese people are well known for their politeness and they teach this in the schools from a young age. I think it's a beautiful looking country and a wonderful place to visit if you are lucky enough. Great video again Don. 😀👋
Another great video Don and really good tips on traveling to Japan. I agree with you about Canada. I love Canadians and how polite and cordial the Canadians I have met on cruises as well as my travels to Canada.
Trains are crowded during rush hours. If you avoid the 7:30-9:00 times you might have to stand but you won’t feel too crowded. The uniformed “pushers” you mentioned are found in Tokyo and Yokohama and not in Osaka, Hiroshima, etc. and only during peak times. You must watch for the “women only” cards in other cities, though.
Your review has heightened my desire to travel through this nation, and am trying to get there for the Olympics next year. Japan and Canada are my two bucket list nations to travel through!
I'm surprised you didn't realize there was skiing in Japan. In your video was a photo of a snowcapped Mt. Fuji and there is a well known festival called the Sapporo Snow Festival. The Winter Olympics were held in Nagano I think in 1998.
I agree Don.... couldn't believe how nice and polite Japanese people are. I loved the order and respect accorded to everyone. Would love to go back one day. MickieG Adelaide Sth Australia
We are on a Diamond Princess round Japan in November. Been before but only a couple of ports. We are really looking forward to it. Especially after hearing your enthusiastic report.. Hope you are still feeling tip top health wise. Regards from Brisbane, Australia
Hi....I just booked last week a back to back to back to back 45 day cruise to japon. Only 2 ports will be a repeat....ship day at port. Hilo is an industrial port.
Great video. Sorry you missed the Cherrie blossom thing but not a big deal if I went to Japan. I live in NYC .. major show of cherrie blossoms in parks and also great to go to Washington. DC when they are in bloom in the spring. enjoy Yourself
Hello Don, I have some questions about cruising to Japan, 1. Where can I go to set up a cruise to Japan? 2. Is it necessary to get a Hotel room once you disembark the cruise ship? 3. Can you return and leave the cruise ship as you please anytime of the day or night? If so, how does getting into the City and getting back to your cabin work at your leisure? 4. Are full course meals included and the price of your cruise tickets? Or must you pay for meals on the cruise? (probably a silly question)
Thank you so much for sharing, It has always been a dream for me to visit Japan and China. Thank you for bringing us along. Don, if you can join in a Tai Chi class while you're in China..🎏
omg you have to visit the Harajuku district next time you go to Japan. you'd get quite a laugh from all the colorful alternative fashion and cute anime characters
Trains in Japan can be crowded depending on the time of day. The only place they have people push you on the trains is Tokyo and I was told when I was there in April that was going away. The trains and subways are really easy to get around and use and if you need help just ask. Japanese people are super friendly and helpful. I was in Japan for 4 weeks travelled on the trains a lot and only ran into super crowded trains three times. Once was a super crowded tourist spot and the other two business rush times.

Subways in Tokyo can also be complicated. On the same platform trains can be going to different directions, branching off onto different lines. You must be careful to catch the right train. Politeness and respect are important in Japan, so foreigners who are loud, who shout, or who mess around would be frowned upon. By the way, I hope, Don, that you have got yourself a new puppy. I know how sad you were when you lost your sweet friend, your dog, and I felt so sorry for you. Stay safe.
I love the Japanese. Such a wonderful culture.
Don't feel out-done in the politeness... Canada is just as nice, just not as organized about it. ;)
As a Canadian I'm sad that we're outdone, but then again my children are monsters lol :)
Thanks for the info
I am Canadian, but based on your story of the schoolkids, I'm now looking for a good temporary boarding school in Japan for my kids. ; )
