- This is only my second visit to the 'new' Amoeba Music location in Hollywood since I moved back down to SoCal. I loved the first location and I went there quite often 'back in the day'.... Every day is a good day at Amoeba!
I show some footage from inside the store and then show you the CDs that I picked up!
Great tour of a store I need to put on my bucket list. I would have snatched the Taking Liberties CD if you hadn't. Yes, my nose hairs would have been singed too but I take comfort in knowing that you are the best Beatle channel! A fun episode. Thanks!
Thanks Andy. Haha. The best Beatles channel. As you may or may not know, the Beatles ARE my favorite band but get little coverage on my channel cuz they are talked about everywhere else. I don't know why I thought it was humorous to say I was the 'best Beatles channel' but at least it makes people chuckle! And now I have a spare Taking Liberties with faded spine.... Here's a funny thing: I bought the new TL CD to replace the one with the faded spine but the 'best of EC and the attractions' CD's spine is so faded, it is pure white! I didn't notice that until I was putting the CDs away!!!
Great video
im CD Junkie as well so ill be watching all the time
Keep collecting
Happy new year
funny enough i’m posting a video from a recent visit to that Amoeba later this week. first time at the new location. miss the parking garage underneath but still awesome. glad they didn’t just close up the shop for good. i got that great 2 CD Paul Kelly album. Actually bought it in Australia. Kind of a blind buy all i knew was Dumb Things. Thats a cool version of the Slits album. I just discovered The Saints earlier this year. Not sure how they slipped by me all these years. cool pickups.
I'll keep an eye out for that video, Steve. And The Saints' early years are their finest, although there's so much in their catalog to love!
My hands burning in the vinyl sections...lol. You got a lot more than I thought and many I don't have. I would like to visit there if ever in the neighborhood. It looked like a great day out. Now to look forward to all the great music to come in 2024...take care
Hey Stephen, stores like that are so daunting to me that I probably wouldn't have picked anything up. I love the the Joe Strummer Box Set was on Dark Horse. Sweet finds BTW... Take care...
I get lost in these stores and forget that there's a real world that I need to return to!
Oh my gosh I’m drooling! I would be like, totally overwhelmed in there! I would not know where to start! Plus extras like mugs, tees, posters and other music paraphernalia! Fabulous! Thanks for the tour! Cheers 🍻
Make that visit happen, Mr. Street! I'll take you there!
Great video Steve! I'd love to see that in person! I've never done CA.
It's "What's In My Bag?" with Stephen Schnee! It's nice to see a record store with people inside it! People still want physical product! All good!
And you pretty much filled your bag with artists known and unknown. Gogi Grant should be a banger!
Great video by The Most Popular Beatles Channel On RUclips.
Thanks, Doc. I had a grand time.. but like every time I go and spend my credit, I regret not getting things that I should have picked up. I guess I'll never be 100% happy!
@@StephenSchnee None of us are 100% happy with what we have. That's why we keep buying!
Awesome pickups!! Loved all your CD finds. The Strummer box looks very cool. Thanks for sharing..
Thanks Progward! You need to make it to Amoeba!
That Joe Strummer box set looks wonderful. Have never been to tgat store, but maybe one day I will get there.
Yeah, I was glad to finally get that Strummer box! And yes, Wally. If you ever come to the West Coast, Amoeba in San Fran and Hollywood are essential. The Berkeley store is great, too, but smaller.
Thanks for the view the shop. How does this location compare with the San Fran and Berkeley locations in terms of size?
Hi Eugene. The original Hollywood location was bigger (and probably the biggest of the three), but this 'new' location probably compares to the San Francisco store more than the Berkeley one.
Aaaaahhhh … thanks for the retrospective, Steve. On my work trips to LA back in the day I would always fit in a visit to the original Amoeba store. A music lovers heaven! I could, and did, spend hours there. The new store is still pretty sizable.
Muddy boobies!
Thanks DC! I must admit that the old 'Meebs was better than this new one, but this new one is still great!
I just picked up the same Gary Myrick album at my local record stores 3 FOR THE PRICE OF TWO sale! Score with WALL OF VOODOO! Fun video Schnee! You’re the best at what you do! Curious what you think of the RED & BLUE CDs
Seriously, I NEVER knew this came out on CD until yesterday (when I made the video)! And thank you very much for your support and kind words. I've listened to the RED & BLUE and I'm neither elated or disappointed. Some of the songs sound a bit odd to me (She Loves You and I Am The Walrus in particular) but the great thing is we have the original mixes in our collections already so it doesn't ruin the songs for me - in fact, it is 'interesting' to listen to - but I'll stick with original mixes if I'm going to listen to these songs in the future. I do like the fact that they exist, though. If I hated 'em, I'd have to be honest about it... but I don't hate 'em at all!
I have Dark Continent as part of a double with Call Of The West. The A&M reissue is pretty hard to find as it was deleted so long ago. Love their version of Ring Of Fire on index masters. I wonder if the chain is named after The Adolescents song 🤔.
Yes, I'd like that WoV CD or the one with Dark Continent on its own. It can be had online but is usually out of my price range!
I have an Amoeba t-shirt but I've never been to California! We had Vintage Vinyl in New Jersey, but it closed a few years back.
i did a video on my last visit to Vintage Vinyl when they closed. that was a bummer. even loved the Vintage Vinyl they used to have in Ocean back in 90s. Amoeba is great if you ever get out there.
@@STEVEHEROLD That would probably be my first stop if ever I find myself in L.A.
I lament the closing of Vintage Vinyl……
@@popdetective1000 yeh at least it seemed it closed on their terms cause they wanted to retire as opposed to shutting down due to pandemic or poor sales. although not sure why they didn’t try to just sell the place or try.
I wish we had a store like that here! I'm sure I'd be able to find many CDs I'm missing for my collection. The prices don't seem all that bad too, but then again, I'm up here in Canada. Great video!
Thanks Morris. The great thing about Amoeba is that they don't always have everything you're looking for, but they always have just enough to keep you coming back for more. And I think that is even better. You can come back every few weeks and find new treasures that weren't there before... or maybe you missed the last time!
@@StephenSchnee Sounds awesome!
Big specialist record stores like Amoeba have all but disappeared here in Australia. We have a big national chain who do an OK job but sell heaps of non musical stuff as well-phones, cd players and turntables. coffee machines and even fridges. When the chain has what I want (eg box sets from McCartney, Beatles, Dylan etc) it's usually prohibitively expensive and much cheaper online from Amazon, E-bay and the like. There are small shops still around but these can be hard to find and often don't carry a lot of what you want. Loved the video.
Thank you so much for taking the time! Oh, boy, how I'd love to visit ANY sized store in Australia and go through the used bins! There's still a few Aussie only CDs I need from Mondo Rock, Australian Crawl, and a few other artists!
It’s always nice when you go into a record store and you find something that jumps out at you. I shop used for both CDs and vinyl. I found ColourBox - Baby I Love You So, 12” for $3.00 on my last trip.
Now that's what you call In Store Credit! Probably would take me 5 Hours to figure out what to purchase!
Got that Alphaville CD, but still only have Fleshtones on vinyl. I also own the Slits deluxe (which I got at Vintage Vinyl!) as well as the original LP....for the cover and the Index Masters.
Like the Slits, the Fleshtones come and go in my collection, depending on whether I need money or not!
You’ve had a good run if the “condition slip”-ed CDs you’ve bought there in the past have not been so bad. Little known fact: there’s also a pricing tier between “max” & “condition slip” called dollar down. It’s unlabeled & just a buck off the “max” price if there’s a slight imperfection.
Yeah, I've had a great run (so far) so this one disc was kind of a surprise. But I'll invest in a CD buffer when I can afford it ($50 or so). Talk to yooz later today!
Thank you for the video. I like to visit a long time ago since it was on 6400 Sunset Blvd in March 2019 but I can't too long by car, I have to stay seated for all time on the plane cannot stand up I cannot sit too long and I live in ottawa. I'm sorry. I don't live in LA or any cities that is closer like Long Beach.
The one on Sunset was better, but this new location is great, too!
You should get a CD resurfacer. I'm pretty meticulous about my CDs, I never touch the underside and always put discs in jewel cases if they originally came in cardboard sleeves. But if I buy something used that's scratched, it's only because it's rare or out of print. Resurfacer is good for that. Electric one, not the hand crank.
I wonder how much those are?
@@StephenSchnee Check Amazon
CLASH ON BROADWAY?? Intriguing!
Lauryn Hill candle! She rented movies at the video store I worked at! She owed us a lot of late fees.
I never quite 'got' Lauryn Hill. That doesn't mean she didn't deserve her fame, but I sometimes wonder if she was way more popular in her own house than she was in the real world. But heck, I'm the most popular guy in my place, and I don't even like me!
@@StephenSchnee I think she had a good voice and the one song "Doo Wop (That Thing)" that got attention was good, and I like a few Fugees song....actually liked their first album when it came out, and no one cared, But their cover of "Killing Me Softly" and "Fu-Gee-La" were both really annoying. She was very cute, though.
Why are you blaming the record store for the sunbleached spine? It’s almost 100% more likely that it was traded in like that & the former owner’s fault.
Amoeba in SF is bigger and better. It fills what used to be a bowling alley. The original in Berkeley is much smaller.
I love the San Francisco store. And I now think it is the best of the three. The original store store in Hollywood was the best, but they had to move.
@@StephenSchnee Plus the old Hollywood location had easy free parking (at least it did the last time I was there in 2006).
I worked at Amoeba for a couple years back when it was in that giant 2-storey palace on Sunset. It was a wonderful place to work, and I made several very good friends. It's still a huge and great store even in its reduced state. Also - shout out to Big Stir Records! Go Christina and Rex! Thanks for the video.
I'm sure I must have seen you at the old location since I was there a lot back then! And yes, Rex and Christina are doing great work with Big Stir!
