  • Businesses will have to pay workers higher salaries when the updated Local Qualifying Salary scheme starts in July. They say the move will put a strain on their businesses as they find ways to pay a higher wage. But other companies say they are benefiting from other Budget announcements like the S$1 billion top-up to the Progressive Wage Credit Scheme.

The local currency is getting smaller each day....back in the 70's. A grads with 200 dollar are able to feed his entire family, pay the house loan, in the 80's a 3 rm hdb is only 8k to 9k, pay pub bills etc...and the wife a house maker taking care of the children. Now , hus and wife total incomd 8k and still abit struggling but comfortable. No need starve but cant aave to be rich....and the best thing is all the people r dumb to think 4k monthly salary is not bad...and their wife have to work too. Wake up dude

People need to remind themselves that every company that exists operate for the reason of profits. Though this is a good and much needed for individuals and part timers, higher interest rates, inflation and higher wages also means that your bill would have to be higher. We all need to bear it to support the workers extra pay gracefully.

@@Maris_S28 Don't forget we were also once poor. Singapore also was once a bustling migrant hub where most of our parents here were also migrants. The right policies were there and even though it wasn't a land of honey and milk. But slowly it became a land of honey and milk. Migrants didn't seem to be the problem then. And i don't think it is the problem now. It's the policies. When we teach people they are entitled to the labour of others. The rich have robbed them even though they have never heard and even seen them. The labour they have worked for belongs to the society and not to them. That's why we keep having more gst, higher transport cost, higher rent, higher ulitity bills. I want to for once ask. If you said corporations are bad. The rich are evil so we have progressive taxes. Why the hell are u asking for more gst, higher pay when the standard of living of singapore is going down the toilet. When the cost of living go up not the standard we are charge more property taxes, we can only realise property gains when we sell them not when we are living in them. Don't tell me you all don't know that?
Now back to why I think everything is going to change. Harry Dent also said similar. We have reached the peak of the working population aka boomer generation. They are retiring. They are going to take out their cpf. Their investment in houses. stocks. cpf. So that they can retire. The gen X and Millennials. Are depressed from the
low value they are getting out of work and couldn't make enough to buy houses and live well and so they don't have babies. Then now the problem comes. As the boomers need
to be taken care of in their old age. The gen X and millennials are going to take care of them. But since gen X and millennials don't have much children. Who is going to
take care of the gen X and millennials who are going to retire.
That's all coming through the ages where the merging of the primary and secondary school here in singapore. In japan we have also heard for years of schools and people going
to the town side. But when even the towns are losing population.
Who is going to take over the dying ruling class? Some places like in china I don't even know who is going to? In singapore when there are no cars on the road are they going
to tell you coe because jam, erp because jam also? When we go out then look around are there more or less people? How do we tell if there are actually more people coming in?

The Govt is becoming more anti-establishment. Higher Wages should come with more productivity and value created. Low value creation = lesser salary, period. Don't mess this system up and increase costs for everyone trying to live here.

    • @nietanbeechin
      @nietanbeechin 7 месяцев назад +7

Agree with your statement "Higher Wages should come with more productivity and value created". But are u sure these workers are asking for higher Wages? They are asking to be paid accordingly. Meaning their pay is artificially suppressed cos Govt is not anti but rather PRO establishment. Why do I said that is because basic rule of any economy: supply vs demand. High demand for blue collar workers yet low local worker supply. PAP had suppressed the pay of these workers by introducing foreign labor, reason being Singaporean do not want these jobs. Is it true? Nobody can answer this question unless these jobs are being fairly compensated. What is then a fair wage? Obviously, the Govt, being pro establishment, had no intention to find out. That is why the call for min wage of SGD 9 by WP was out. But is SGD9 fair enough? I do not know but I do know that min rate in USA is USD15 to 20, depending on the state. Take note that cost of living is higher in Singapore than NY.
Nobody is trying to mess the system up and increase costs for everyone trying to live here.
Higher operating cost in Singapore is not the reason for higher retail price. Let me give u a solid example:
During covid, as the majority of foreign labor reach for hometown, do u see a increase in price? The increase came after. During the pandemic, local blue collar workers are paid double or triple to come to work. I am a living example. My hourly pay as a dishwasher increased from S$11 to S$20. Zaobao reported that experience part time waiters went up to S$30 to 35 from S$12 to 18.
When outlet complained Abt higher operating costs, they are just trying to signal to PAP to increase foreign labor quota or a prelude to future retail price increase.
And do take note that food prices, at least for cooked food, is abnormal in Singapore. Singapore is probably the only country in the world that cooking at home is more expensive than eating out.

I don’t think artificially depressing local wages with cheaper imported foreign labour is the way to go in the long run - just see what happens in countries that do not take proper care of their citizens’ livelihoods and aspirations. I find that it’s very expensive living in Singapore though my needs are simple.. and bots, don’t ask me to move out of Singapore if lm not happy. I’m a true blue and l have my citizen birth rights.
l am not surprised if our native birth rate continues to fall below the replacement rate. Am l the only one concerned about our traditional racial, social and cultural makeup and national security with so many foreign nationalities now as Permanent Residents and new citizens?
