I paid $3.200 for a barely used (8k hours on the clock)accudraft, full downdraft booth with a million btu gas heating system and dry fire suppression setup. I purchased this unit 3 years ago from a shop in PA that was sold to a mechanic that wanted the extra bay for another lift. I paid $1000 to have it hauled to my shop in Hudson county/NJ + plus 3 of my guys to help load and unload. Another $2k for 2 booth guys to put it all together in 3 days. Not a bad investment for a booth that was sold new for nearly $60k new. I have a much better side draft than Mr. Leno has in his shop and it cost me $3000 already in the building when a bought it. I fitted this booth with a new 800k btu burner for another $2500. A nice and clean booth that costs 8K new. In the northeast we need heat 5 months of the year because of the long winters, but in general I bake everything for 30 minutes anyways. In the southwest where is mostly warm most of the time, I can see why a cross draft would suffice, though not very good for painters that have to move against the flow to stay away from harmful fumes.
i used to installed Accudraft spray booth for like 8 years in NY state
tell you what you got a steal from them booth guys put that booth back together for $2000 my old boss would charge you easy $10k or more put that Accudraft back together . when i did service calls my boss would charge them travel time and $200 and hour .

Dang !! I wish I was one of Jay's friends. He gets to do some real historical museum level stuff !! The most I can afford is to restore and paint a few Harleys and a 350Z. I had a Fairlady and a Skyline bach in 81/82 when I lived in Japan. So much FUN !!! I'd bet Jay has some top of the line beer cooling somewhere in his shop . . .
As always, very interesting. These segments always make me second guess my life and career choice. Instead of college and medicine, maybe a good solid vocational skill such as auto painting would have been less stressful and a better choice. What might have been...
But then again, how many car painters can remove their own appendix and survive?

i love the positive pressure face mask. no hard breathing filters change outs.
Not bad considering the good setup you'll have. You can make it pay for itself really quick if you're good.

On Jay's older classics, I wonder if he prefers single-stage urethane paints over greater depth/glossier two-stage base/clear paints? While two-stage often appears richer and more shiny, it doesn't quite have that "period correct" appearance on cars from the 1970's and older IMO.
Waterborne dries better in a cross draft booth. Its probably why they got a cross draft.. The air flow caused by a cross draft dehydrates the paint more efficiently.
Gained mad respect for Jay Leno when I seen his garage.
I am in the same boat as you. But I have used A nice SATA gun and the quality in noticeable. Plus the less expensive guns don't last as long.
Hope you never stop doing these videos Jay! Is there anyway for fans to come see your garage? Maybe you can hold a contest or something and the winner can come by and see your collection!
I have one of those daa vacs, and those things really work. I sucked a gnat out of my clear coat this week with it. Great tool.
Here's a tip that is probly just as good for tools as it is for good music gear-check the pawn shops. For instance, in SoCal there are several right across the street from the Courthouse. This is good stuff the owner didn't want to part with. I saw a sander once that I wish I'd bought. Also get on the Auctions lists for gear and facilities. ;)
Jay probably went with cross draft booth because 1. he found one cheap, or 2. he didn't want a ramp going into booth or to lower the floor in his shop, (which is probably leased so he doesn't have to pay property taxes on it.) or 3. they are easier to move. Not because of waterborne paint. (which Jay may or may not actually use, its not that hard to get solvent based paint sent to CA from Nevada).
Exactly! That money means he can save another piece of history for people to admire.
Wish I had the warehouse to put that booth in like this one is...dang that's nice.
It's nice to have the space and money for all the equipment, but out of necessity I sprayed all my cars outside in multiple coats lacquer and hand rubbed. Lacquer can be sprayed at a low psi and dries very quick.

I'd liked to have heard more from your staff artist on how'd he use the tools, and especially his thoughts on the mask.
plastic tarps, a hvlp electric sprayer, painter's tape, few gallons of paint, and a heavy duty fan in a one car garage that came with my apartment = about $100 gets the job done
The fume explosions are free.
I paint outside I rarely have to buff anything it's all about staying clean

I would have thought that Jay would have a better exhaust filter than the OLD Andrea filter that does not capture much overspray. I would use Paint Pockets Green.
Jay forgot to mention you need a permit from AQMD to run a spray booth.good luck on getting one of those.
actually that is reasonable, the dealership i worked for had a two bay paint booth that could be closed or open in the middle and they paid $12,000 from the manufacturer
What’s best pressure for mount filters is good my gun 5000 brp I use 32 psi but pressure go up down and I have big compressor thanks for your help

Don't you think that a garage with dedicated paint booth is a bit of over kill for your average enthusiast who owns one or two cars and a garage that fits only two cars? I can appreciate the fact that when I will have a warehouse sized garage, I can save 30k+ on buying a used professional booth, but for now on, I think I need something simpler.. and maybe a bit less professional?

Sata makes a nice durable gun. There are cheaper guns out there. But if you are spraying every day a Sata will hold up for many years.

You can, I bought one for 3500 couple states over, painted it up just like jays, used it for few years, then sold it for 5500. It was a great booth.

My dad use to paint outside and it turned out ok. Except one time he painted a car yellow. Every bug imaginable landed on the paint. Needless to say it had to be sanded down. No more yellow paint again.

Just because you have lots of money, doesn't mean you have to go wasting it all on things you don't have to. $2500 is one hell of a deal! It's a paint booth, it does it's job, that is all.

There was a body shop that up and left on the other side of our building and the land management would have given their booth away.

700 to 800 dollars for a spray gun seems excessive to me. I think the DIY enthusiast can find a proper gun for less than 100 dollars. I even paid less for mine and works like a treat.

I don't know where or how Jay comes up with a price for that booth of 30 or 40 thousand???? NEW, Its nothing but a standard cross draft booth. Look on ebay you will find them BRAND NEW for $5000 give or take a couple bucks. There are some new ones there for $4500. So he paid 2500 or 3500 for a USED booth that he could have purchased new for another $1,000.????? Don't believe me??? look on ebay for yourself.
I learned recently that quite a bit of the brand name stuff on eBay may be a forgery. Just my two cents but with something this important, my twwo cents is do some research on the seller. Be well.

sata"s are overpriced pieces of crap I've been a professional painter for over 25yrs I just bought a sata rp 4000b digital spray gun paid over 800$ for it !!!! the first time I took it apart to clean it the clean it the cheap plastic air distributor cap was never the same leaks air out of the nozzle what a joke should have bought a Devilbiss ProTech.much more durable and sprays as good if not better and only 480s😠
