    Hey Jack, interesting video thanks! I don't have a Decent Espresso Machine, but have had a few other machines (Gaggia, Expobar, Londinium). I've had most luck with VST baskets personally. The IMS ones i've tried have been a bit fussy, but this was a few years back. I've also purchased a Pullman Basket (flow rate definitely higher) as I wanted to try out paper filter on the bottom. Interested in your thoughts regarding paper filters too. p.s. I heard Decent Baskets were VST also, but holes are quite different...cheers!

      Yes and no, i found the 15g unforgiving till i moved to the 18g VST. Yes it does, always produces a good cup. I think your difficulty in distinguishing the flavour notes might be due to the Niche. I would be interested to see how things would change if you switched over to flat burrs. Looks like you have a DF64. Do you have the SSP MP burrs installed?

    • @mycoffeeshow111
      @mycoffeeshow111  Год назад

      I never heard about Sunbeam Barista until now. It looks very close to Barista Express. I don’t know how good the grinder is but VST and Pullman baskets have lots of holes, can be faster than standard basket therefore you would need to grind finer. I probably would go for IMS as they are a bit slower. That is just my speculation, as I said I don’t know this machine.

    They’re all “precision” enough these days. The importance is coverage, Pullman’s has the most bottom coverage and less tapering wall of all. And icing on the cake: if you use bottom paper filter, any 2.25 inch paper punch will make perfect paper filter for it, with minimal wall creep.

    • @mycoffeeshow111

    • @longpvo
      @longpvo 2 года назад

      @@mycoffeeshow111 That’s the misconception I think, pressure is still going to do its thing. You can dial in body in my experience. Bottom paper filter does clean up the palpable grittiness texture a bit. All these depend on the grinder output profile. Square Chemex has the best workflow if you want to experiment.

    2:00 Apparently they're made in the VST factory for Decent, I noticed the Decent baskets are noticeably heavier / thicker than the VST at least vs my old VST (probably got it 8 years ago?) so it's possible they changed things up.
    I believe the VST baskets are ridgeless (can you also get them ridged?) and the Decent Baskets are ridged.
    But otherwise design seems similar to me, on both you have to grind finer, and I find I have issues with channeling on both Decent and VST baskets.
    For that reason I prefer the stock baskets, it's easier to get more consistently good results, vs maybe getting slightly more clarity and a better shot sometimes but a worse shot more often due to channeling. It doesn't seem worth it to me!
    Maybe it works better on a Decent brand machine your shots look like they're coming out nicely.
    The Superfine mesh IMS basket was similar to the stock basket and worked well with a little more clarity and less body due to the super fine mesh I believe, but I didn't love it since it was harder to clean.

    • @mycoffeeshow111
      @mycoffeeshow111  2 года назад

      Thank you for sharing. I haven’t thought about checking the weight. You can get ridgless and ridged VST. Mine is in fact ridged and weighs 33.9g vs 34.4g for Decent basket

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 2 года назад

      @@mycoffeeshow111 Thanks wasn't sure about that ridge thing, I only had the ridgeless VST. I re-sold the 18g VST and my Decent 18g one but the Decent was noticeably heavier otherwise I wouldn't have thought to weigh it either. I just weighed the 15g Decent and it's 33g! I remember the 18g one being just a little heavier so probably like yours (34g). But pretty sure the VST was more like my Stock 18g basket closer to 29g maybe, I'm thinking they changed the VST ones to be thicker / heavier at some point, unless the ridged are just heavier/thicker (re-enforcing the ridge since it's a potential weak point?).
