  • I have challenged myself to activate a SOTA on an upcoming backpacking trip. The only way I'm going to achieve that is MORE CW practice! So tonight we're going to start out talking about how to learn the code and then we'll do some practicing live!

The Space Seed episode that introduced Kahn began with CQ--to bring it back to CW.

If you're just starting out, you should use a straight key. Paddles form perfect dits and dahs, but Morse is more than that. Spaces are as meaningful as dits and dahs, and you need to learn all three. A straight key will help you develop muscle memory for all three elements. SoIwontsomedayhearyousendinglikethis, or the way Reuben described. N8CPA

    Fantastic advice
Bought a relatively low price short wave radio so I can listen into cw in my spare time whilst I begin learning
Not in a hurry, just trying to slowly expose myself and start learning slowly now so I can use it in the future when I can afford better equipment and more free time

True story about the first time I tried head copy. I did a lot of listening for my upcoming 20 WPM, Ham radio QSO's, and lot of USCG weather forecasts. I sat for the code test at my Advance test session, intending if I passed both Advanced and 20 WPM, I'd attempt the Extra though I had not really prepared for it. VE's at the time liked to give CW tests at 20, 13 and 5 WPM sequence and encourage candidates to try to copy all speeds. As the test started, I tried to write down everything, but soon realized I could not write at 20 WPM. So I just started copying keywords, and the rest was head copy. I answered the questions on the test and aced it. It was a true confidence booster. I passed the Advanced, but failed the Extra that day. I tried again and passed it 2 months later. N8CPA

I was recommended this RUclips video and I absolutely appreciate all that you’ve done to make this possible. I am looking at studying my Yhang. I’m also a Canadian Ham so I do have a Canadian cosign. My main question is really if anyone knows how to program a DMR?
