At the bottom of all the "How Questions" of Science are the "Why Questions" of Philosophy and at the bottom of those, there is the Logos (ie. The "reason" or "explanation" for everything), but most wonderful of all, that unifying agent of all Truth has chosen to reveal Himself to humanity:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it...The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Jesus Christ is LORD (and that's really good news, because He's amazing! Pray to Him today! Get alone! Seek His face! Repent! Let's go from reason into revelation! Jesus loves you and died for you! Ask Him to show you His glory today!)

John Lennox is such a humble and articulate Christian thinker! I really like his answer to Pilate's question here: truth is objective and absolute - truth is a Person. His point about logical positivism is also really interesting: just because you can't provide evidence of the 2+2=4 type (i.e. formal propositions), doesn't mean something can't be true. Great insights, Brandon and really creative thumbnail featuring a juxtaposition of a white and black swan which ingeniously references both Popper's verifiability principle and Taleb's theory of 'the black swan'. For mathematicians, if you cannot provide evidence that 2 + 2 = 4, then that is not true. 2 + 2 is equal to 4 because we have a theorem for that, and that theorem are built from axioms and statement based on logic that is free of contradiction, not something that could be refuted. And for me truth is something that is proven to be true like a theorem. And by all the arguments John Lennox made for the existence of God, he abandoned the very principle of his profession as a mathematician.

This was solid. A lot of people are living out of assumptions and don't realize that "scientism" is actually a philosophy grounded in it's own type of faith. Just faith in a modality that doesn't get to the bottom of everything.

    • @joshua2707

Not faith exactly, but trust, in a system that progresses with patience, and tends, in the long term, to weed out unjustified short-cuts. Maybe it won't get to the bottom of everything, but, contrary to Brandon's implications in this video, there's plenty of time to try (if not for humans as such, then for our successors).

    • @DM-dk7js

@PastPresented - I think you might be splitting hairs a bit, since the definitions of trust and faith are quite intertwined (look it up...). And while you may prefer the walk of science for yourself, the conclusions that science seems to hold, at least in society at large, seems to me to be based on a number of unproved assumptions.

@Robert-ct6bc Hi there. In Christianity, the creator of the universe is not just an abstract concept or force or some completely unknowable supernatural entity. Christians believe we can know the creator and have a personal relationship with Him, not because we are arrogantly thinking ourselves enlightened, but because the creator Himself REVEALED Himself to us. Primarily through Jesus Christ and His resurrection - which, by the way, if is false, Christianity would completely fall apart.
This might sound like news to you, but the New Testament of the Bible is more than just a religious text, it is a collection of historical documents that provides reliable historical evidence to the life, death and, yes, resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. This is a big topic, so I suggest - if you are really concerned about seeking the truth of the matter - that you look into the evidence for the resurrection yourself. What have you got to lose? Try Gary Habermas's video: A Historian Explains the Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus (Dr. Gary Habermas). Professor Lennox has a great little book called Gunning for God: Why the New Atheists are Missing the Target. He goes into great detail here.
Anyway, I hope you have a great day.

Thank you for the encouragement for me to follow reading the word of God, John Lenox .... good knowledge comes from God as a gift-from “His own mouth”-to those who have understanding (Daniel 2:21; Proverbs 2:6). Believers can ask God for more knowledge (Psalm 119:66). One blessing of good knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of those who have it (Ecclesiastes 7:12b).

This is not brain power, the mind and the brain are two separate things. Our spirit is where are mind and emotions reside.
      As for Lennox and his hyper intellectual language, please consider the following strongly;
Logic is arithmetic, they are inextricably one and the same _[which many today are confused (made to think like a pagan Greek or Roman) and thus confuse it with 'reason'],_ and the authentic austere Scriptural Jesus the Christ declares that faith in Him is not based on logic/arithmetic _[what philosophers use, go see Colossians 2:8-9 as one of many Scriptural proofs of the Spirit of Jesus this time through Paul of why philosophy is opposed to what God/Jesus teaches]_ = mental agreement/intellectual assent, but rather that when examining Scriptures in the Jesus taught Acts 17 Berean _[exegesis]_ /John 3:1-21 qualified way, it becomes inescapably clear that faith according to His Holy Writ/His Scriptures is a heart issue _[*_*_*See Hebrews 11 as one of many Scriptural proofs for this***]._** James 2:19 declares that even devils have an intellectual knowledge of God's//Jesus' existence and tremble in fear. So mere intellectual assent/mental agreement in correct Acts 17 Berean **_[exegesis]_** / John 3:1-21 qualified study, is ***not*** true saving faith. To describe faith that way _[as intellectual assent/mental agreement]_ is to demean it as an academic exercise, trivial, ***when in fact it is no such thing.*** What faith really is according to the true God/Jesus of the Scriptures…is the incontrovertible, diamond hard, unwavering, unmoveable, unbreakable, ever-firm inward conviction - childlike trust - an act of appropriation - an act of true and complete trust - that what God/Jesus declares to us in the Gospel - the truth of the Gospel - is true no matter what man's earthly, carnal, fleshly, worldly wisdom _[philosophical etc]_ states. Faith means just that -> Faith _[again, read Hebrews 11 as one many prime examples of how God/Jesus defines faith so you may learn to discard man's definition which violates Luke 16:15, Acts 5:29 and many parallel verses]._
If we attempt to overlay Greek/Hellenic pagan way of thinking [Socratic, Platonist, Aristotelian etc] over the God/Jesus first century born again John 3:1-21 qualified/Acts 17 Berean Israelite way of thinking, we are in essence in grave error how we are studying the Scriptures and thus not obeying the true Jesus in how we are to study the Scriptures as Jesus taught. This is why, as one main example, Paul the Apostle in his letters to the Greeks especially on Mars Hill, refutes and annihilates their whole way of thinking - how they see the world - for it inherently is founded upon fatally flawed foundations that are intrinsic to the spiritually darkened pagan mind inspired by the Devil who seduces mankind with carnal worldly wisdom that is deceit mixed with out-of-focus truth that leads to eternal perdition [Colossians 2:8-9, one of many Scriptural proofs] but sold as in focus truth of utmost sublimity when it's not, and thus incontestably diametrically opposed to the one and only true God/Jesus of the Scriptures teaching us about the origin of man + how to view all things through His eyes such as the nature of reality He created. God/Jesus taught "come let us reason together" not "come let us be logical" which by the way: Spock from Star Trek would tell you to be 'logical' since Gene Roddenberry, a high level Freemason/diabolist, deliberately invented the character Spock to represent the archetype of satan to deceive the audience to not know Spock was actually representing satan [interesting also is the word 'Spock' has the same amount of letters as "satan" and both start with 's'.]

Reality by its very essence is open and does not have properties. Reality is the ultimate negation. Reality is defined by what it is not. You cannot prove that something is real. You can show something is real by demonstrating that it does not go away in the absence of belief. If everyone stops believing in God would he fade into nonexistence? We know that whatever people belief about the Cosmos has no effect on the Cosmos. Beliefs just affects our survival. Could the Cosmos have turned out any other way? We can imagine that is the case but in the end the Cosmos turned out how she turned out and that is all to it.

Thank you for this video. I love how John Lennox explains things. God has placed him in a very critical point in history to help us understand more about our faith in Jesus Christ.
If you allow me a comment on the video. Reading John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life” and being Greek myself I cannot help but share the meaning of the greek word for truth, which translates to “Aleethia” (Αλήθεια). The greek version of the verse in John 14:6 is: “Εγώ είμαι η οδός και η αλήθεια και η ζωή”. Looking at the greek word for truth I realize that it consists of 2 parts. The first part is the negative particle “alpha” α (α-λήθεια) and the second part is the word “leethee” (λήθη) which translates to “oblivion”. By saying the word truth (aleethia, αλήθεια) in greek, we refer to something that everyone will remember when everything else has been forgotten. The word of God is truly amazing. Praise be to God!

One person might believe the earth is flat while the other might believe the earth is round. Just because their opinions differ doesn’t make the truth subjective. Our perception just isn’t perfect so we have to continually make a case that our belief explains more of reality than the opposing side. Morality works the same way. If I say a speed limit of 100mph is best for a neighborhood street, my opponent can probably pretty easily provide more information on why a 35mph speed limit is better, because it will likely lead to less suffering for the people we care about. We never really know the perfect rule, but that’s how morality still works. We might be a bit blind but morality is our attempt to still walk towards happiness. On one hand, John Lennox seems like such a sweet, genuine person. On the other hand, he claims to love logic but resolutely refuses to use it when it comes to Christianity. I rarely watch his videos from beginning to end because, frankly, they're a waste of time. This is one time where I have made an exception.
    1. His statement that truth is difficult to define is demonstrably false. In a nutshell, truth is one of many forces that govern the reality in which we live. And as we continue to learn about the universe around us, we will learn things that are true or false. That's it. There's nothing mystical about truth.
    2. "The idea that God exists is non-verifiable, I would contradict that straight away. **I think it is verifiable in the sense that you can adduce evidence for it. In other words, you could begin to put up a case that corresponds with our experience of reality.**"
In other words, John can infuse his own reality with cherry-picked passages from a book that is as logically false as it is a moral failure.
Conversely, I can much more easily deduce that the god that John worships does not exist while he continues to engage in logical fallacies in order to justify his god's existence. For example, I can logically deduce that the idea of owning another human being is absolutely wrong. I can point out that the Bible teaches that not only is it acceptable to own a slave, but it is very specific in stating how severely and how long you can beat them. I would like to think that everyone in this channel, regardless of the sincerity of their faith, would agree that this is horrifying and wrong. But John would rather conveniently ignore that fact and continue believing that the god he worships is the author of all that is good.
However, Jesus - the man who supposedly walked on water, fed the multitudes from scraps, raised the dead, restored sight to the blind, healed the sick, etc., - never spoke a word against slavery and could not have foreseen that there would come a day when humanity would identify it as evil? Please. He had the absolute power to do anything, including at the very least demanding the end of slavery, but he didn't. Moreover, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke do not align regarding the birth narratives of Jesus. Finally, the pieces of evidence that Jesus gave regarding his return in Matthew, Luke and Mark are demonstrably false and contradictory.
Ergo, if Jesus can't even get the details of his own birth and return right, and not denounce slavery as evil, then how can you call him God? Yet, John continues to believe Jesus' statement, "I am the truth," when he clearly is not.
    3. "The basic God question in my mind is if there is a God, has he revealed himself? Now, the other big claim of the Christian faith is that God *has* disclosed himself in two major ways. One by speaking through his word, which we have written in the Bible. And, at the deepest level, in Christ, himself."
I was listening to my wife read a passage to my son last night about the things that God supposedly hates, one of them being the shedding of innocent blood. If that is true, then how can John continue to defend verses like Hosea 13:16 or Numbers 5:11-31 since he claims to love logic? If Jesus is God as John believes, then why did he command the genocide of Israel's neighbors, r*ping of women, and slaughter of children as depicted in the Old Testament? Or better yet, how can John defend such atrocities?
So, yes, I agree with John that the god of the Bible has revealed himself. Which is to say that he is nothing short of a stone age deity who revels in the shedding of innocent blood. Why would anyone want to have anything to do with such a being?
As an agnostic, I like John Lennox. I really do. But in spite of his intelligence, the fact that he continues to espouse faith in a god that is contradictory and anything but logical grants me the ability to ignore his claims about truth and logic altogether.

John Lennox makes an incredibly weak argument here.
First, no science makes the assertion that science is the only path to truth. Science doesn't even say it reliably produces truth at all. Theories are disproven all the time. That's a strawman.
Second, he says that rationality and revelation are not contradictory, which can be true. However, he then substantiates his belief in God using a horrible logical argument. He says, "If Goes exists, then has he revealed himself?" He then provides two pieces of evidence for why he thinks God has revealed himself, the Bible and Christ himself. Right after he says that falsifiability is not a prerequisite to truth, he lists a predicate that absolutely is falsifiable. The Bible makes historical claims, and history is a field that allows falsifiability. So, the question is, is the Bible accurate? That has a yes or no answer, thus, that can be disproven. Not like that matters, because his question is conditional and his argument assumes the consequent. It could very well be the case that God does not exist and the Bible is irrelevant.
If you want to believe in God because God has revealed himself to you, fine, but don't make a bad, logically useless argument to support it and to convince other people. Let God reveal himself to them.

The carnal mind can only work with concepts, ideas about things, belief systems etc, and when God doesn't fit into any of that the immediate reaction is to write Him off as nonexistant. Once we come to know Him as the Person that He IS, ALL of the misconceptions turn to dust and blow away. You either know Him or you don't. Truth is what IS! Is that meant as a hyperbole? Becuase I have been under the understanding that love, sex, happiness, meaning, emotions, all have understood reasons for existing, have varied forms of expression, exist in different forms across the animal kingdom to different degrees, have been studied by many people, play a large role in human life, and predate religion?

*_(regarding Christ) "...I am the Truth..."_* (4m 5s). This reminds me of the notion that learning many concepts requires that you [mentally] "stand" in the right location in order to understand something non-solid, like a type of relationship, or a personality trait. Sometimes an abstract idea can only be understood by extrapolating from two or more other abstract ideas.
The Bible is like this, for it is a book of *_Spirituality._* And spirit is non-physical (consisting of NO space, NO time, NO energy, NO mass, and NO ego). The Bible discusses spiritual topics through metaphor, simile, analogy and parable.
In many ways, the Bible points to Truth, but indirectly. It is like the old saying of the Wise Man who points to the Moon, but most people only see the Finger. In this metaphor, the Moon represents Truth, and the finger represents the literal ("ink") text of scripture.
The Bible is FULL of *_Intentional Contradictions._* AND many books were left out of the biblical canon because the POLITICIANS of the early church could not stand the degree of contradictions they found there. *_HOWEVER, the contradictions are NOT "errors" in logic, but PROMPTS for the reader to look beyond the literal to something Non-Physical._*
    *_Example of Apparent Contradiction_*
    -------
One of many examples which comes to mind involves Jesus telling his followers to eat his flesh and to drink his blood. BUT there is a Mosaic Law which prohibits the drinking of Blood. Jesus knew this and by this apparent contradiction he was weeding out the Biblical Literalists of his day -- the Pharisees, Sadducees and others.
We see metaphor right from the start of Genesis: We see "Light" before there are sources of electromagnetic radiation in Genesis 1. The first mention of "Light" is not the physical kind, but the metaphorical kind -- the *_agency of Awareness (spiritual)._*
And the story of the Garden was one of non-physical *_SPIRIT_* (Heaven). God said that Adam would die on the day he ate of the forbidden fruit, but Adam lived for 930 generations, for Genesis 5 tells us that "these are the generations" of Adam, and "days" were "years."
The *_"fruit"_* which Adam ate was *_non-physical_* -- a Matrix of *_dichotomous_* (2-sided) Non-Physical "things" -- good-evil, wisdom-stupidity, compassion-indifference, love-hate, hot-cold, action-reaction,... AND the Tree of Life, also in the Garden, was the non-physical matrix of attitude traits which lead back to God. This Tree of Life matrix is embedded in the 2 Genesis chapters following the 3 words at the end of Genesis 3 -- "...Tree of Life" (etz ha-Chaim).
"Fruit" means "product" or "end result" of one's efforts. Like, we can know a tree by the fruit it bears (which really means, we can know a person by their Behavior). Thus, the "fruit" eaten by Adam, and the Blood offered by Christ, are NOT physical, contrary to the claims of Catholics. AND thus, Christ was not talking of drinking physical blood, but the symbolic sacrifice which we can "see" and "touch" and "consume" ONLY by SPIRIT, just as Adam consumed only by spirit.
    -------
    *_END: Example_*

Adam and Eve were not real people they were legendary figures. Looking at their names reveal that fact. Adam’s name means Earth and Eve’s name means source of life.
The writers of the Bible were taking facts sourced from the knowledge that previous civilizations discovered and translating them into the language and symbols that they had access to.

The heat death will result from the universe continuing to expand (ever more rapidly) with lower energy density driving all thermodynamic activity to zero and, by current calculations, is many (many many many) billions of years into the future.

Many folk don't understand that it is only our own minds that are responsible for all experience.
The world has no purpose or meaning of its own, because only your own mind can give meaning and purpose to anything.
And this varies enormously, which is why there is so much conflict in the world.
Everything is only an individual INTERPRETATION .
Two men look out from the same bars.
One sees mud, the other the stars.
Those interpretations are always a reflection of our own thinking , and emotional state.
A kind , forgiving person will see a totally different world from a fearful, angry person.
Christianity has somehow ignored the centrality of the mind, yet Jesus spoke about it at length.

He came and proclaimed his authority and divinity without a single moment of hesitation. His word was so powerful and touching that even after He has been gone for so long the majority of the world still bows to his authority while the others are merely considered wise men. Kingdoms and empires have risen against Him and all have failed. Yet without raising a single sword He has conquered the world. He is found in the great and holy texts of other religions. These things should be enough to consider Him more than a man. No man, in all of time, has been able to do that before and after him. Jesus Christ is God.
