      Accessibility. The value of owning my studio versus renting “studio time” is an investment that’s paid itself out 1000 times over… I use calibration from Sonarworks Reference 4 Which has really helped me pinpoint a reliable frequency response for my room that I can trust - saving me multiple trips to the car that we all know too well to check our mixes! So yeah, accessibility and reliability! Another great video Andrew :)

    Funny enough, the best part of my set up is knowing that it's going to change in the future. It's an unfinished basement right now and I'm making the most of it for the time being. My wife and I have plans to finish the basement and we have plans to have a studio. Right now, recording means I don't take it too seriously and as a result I'm producing content (music/video) and this is what I need to do to get better at both. I used to get caught up in the fact that my gear was holding me back. That a lack of access to high end equipment was going to be the deciding factor in whether or not, my music would be successful. Right now, I'm making the most of my current set up and hopefully when I'm ready to create a proper space, I'll be that much more clear on what my needs will be. I love that yours is all in one space and knowing your dimensions are super helpful to help me envision what mine would/could be. Great tip about the wireless mouse/keyboard too!

    Late to your post. Things I love about my NEW setup:
    1. Everything I need to do audio and video is close by and accessible.
    2. The lighting in my room is extremely controlled. There are NO windows.
    3. The room is behind a Hidden Murphy door (or it will be as soon as I install it) so it is very private. It's also in the basement so it is very isolated.
    4. I have my keyboard, mouse, Faderport 8, Console One, and MIDI keyboard within my chair swivel.
    5. The room looks cool to me. This is an important point. It makes me want to be in here.
    6. The room sounds pretty good because I am set on a diagonal on a square room, so I have a lot of room behind the desk so it's not close to the wall and a long throw behind me because there is an open doorway into a closet/foyer into the room, giving a longer room than would be normal for a square room (13x13ishx9feet tall). So there is no flat wall in front or behind my but I'm still not in a corner (like I used to be).
    Here's a walkthrough of the newly laid out room: ruclips.net/video/R7vjTBN9G7I/видео.html

    That's a cool set-up and work flow. I've got a similar situation where I have my drum-kit always ready to go. But, where I differ from you is I use primarily Logic X. With this, I can use an iPad to remotely control my DAW from the drum kit. Makes it easier to see what I'm doing, and I can change my ear mix on the fly. See if you DAW's have tablet control.

    • @AndrewMasters

      Andrew Masters That’s understandable. I too had a very outdated iPad, but went and bought the new 7th gen $329 iPad (got it on sale for $275). It’s a little choppy under playback and record mode, but works fine to have remote control and make sure nothing is clipping.

    Hey Andrew. Love your studio setup. I also use only 1 room. One thing I really like about my setup is how I use the USB ports. My laptop sits on a stand with a USB fan on it. I have a lot of gear, but my laptop only has 2 USB 3's and 1 USB C. But I have a digital mixer that I use as control surface as well as presonus faderport for transport controls when I record vocals. I have the atom beat pad from presonus. Native Instruments komplete kontrol 61. Wireless mouse and keyboard. Hard drive docking station. Another portable hard drive and my interface. I figured it kut. I use a USB C docking station. And two USB 3 docking stations. 1 runs into the other. And my interface plugs directly. The docking station also powers the laptop. It's a quick setup with everything plugged in and on in 10 seconds. Another thing I like with my studio is smart lighting throughout. I have 1 switch with programmed scenes, and also a motion sensor to trigger a standard look when I walk in the room.

    My drum room was added onto the end of my house. So that wall has a big gap between the house and room. A 6" thick middle wall (there's 2 rooms in a big add on about 800 sq feet) seperates the 2 rooms. The front wall and outer side wall are both double framed/double OSB sheathing/insulation 2x4 walls. I need to add to the ceiling badly. The room itself is about 20'x13' too haha. My ceiling is 10' too. It lets the drums really sing.

    • @RickK1988
      @RickK1988 4 года назад +8

      I don't use much though. Drums, mics, Tascam Model 24 mixer, Zoom Q8 camera, GoPro as a secondary camera, desktop PC for DAW editing and cutting videos. The majority of my mixing is actually done on the Model 24 itself.

      @@AndrewMasters it's a pretty simple and minimal setup honestly. I use a stage snake with all of my excess mic cable coiled up and zip tied for better organization with that (14 cables sometimes). I've got some good mixes and some terrible ones. I just enjoy the freedom to create and do as you wish with the content. Maybe one day we'll all hit the "big time."

    Amazing setup mate, it looks sleek and functional! Little suggestion, if you have an old MacBook (Pro or Air) or any iPad lying around, you could get Luna Display and effectively use any Apple device as a wireless remote screen to use when you're on the drums! I use this configuration when I'm playing keys and not facing my screen and just have my iPad Pro on a music stand to see my Logic session or virtual instruments on the second display! Combine this with a keyboard + trackpad all in one solution (£20 on amazon) and you pretty much have a second workstation on the other side of the room! Thanks a lot for your videos man, I hope this helps!

    my room has two different heights, one being about 2m tall and the other about 5 or 6 meters. The smaller ceiling part I use as a pseudo-control room and the other one as a "live room". I love that making small spaces based on function makes everything look bigger than just spreading things around the room (I have a little guitar corner, a drum corner and a piano corner and a hardware rack corner). I'm thinking about putting a heavy courtain between the two main spaces just to control a little bit the reflexions, and I could close them down when desired to make the acoustics bigger :)

    Buddy. I enjoyed your video. VERY nice workflow. I’m still figuring my flow out. My favorite part of my studio is my stupidly large bankers desk. 6ft wide and 3ft. Deep. Everything fits on it. My listening spot is perfect and I can listen and mix comfortably. But the truth is I need a proper desk where I can hide my midi keyboard for better workflow. I like that my 88 stage piano is the right of my desk. I simply swivel over there and hash out arranging or chords or whatever before starting the recording process or music writing process.
    I will steal some of your ideas as far as workflow with the desk and drums. Thanks again.

    Great vid Andrew. I love how clean your shots look. Your room definitely plays a role in that. I always struggle with lighting ...soft boxes in particular to get the shots I need. I do have 1 soft box hard mounted above and to the side of my desk for tutorial shoots but then struggle to get the right shot If I need move about the room. It then becomes a re - lighting or rigging situation for me and disrupts my flow or pitch if you will. I always like to go for the “Peter McKinnon” style of the shoot if I can but sometimes that’s not always the case and I end up with a poorly lit shot. Work in progress.

Your videos are helping me tremendously with my home studio. I'm working with Roland Studio Captures and mostly Shure microphones with Logic Pro X. You have me reinventing things every video. Would love to brainstorm the idea of recording 2-3 mins of myself playing, just loops with my SPD-SX and see if you would give me some suggestions for a tighter sound and maybe mix it to give me a professional example to learn from. • @AndrewMasters

      You know, I rarely record myself on electric guitar. I decided to sell my only amp a couple of months ago after working with an incredible session guitar player. He used the HX Stomp box and I was SUPER skeptical of it. But wound up being blown away by what we got with it. Now to be fair the guy ripped on guitar, had a fantastic guitar and knew what he was doing. But long story longer. I decided I didn't need mine, and used the cash to buy the AEA R88 Microphone. haha. I usually hire out guitarists for projects I'm producing so they bring their own rigs.

Super convenient, completely out of the way. I'm in one room the size of Andrew's so, it's a bit simpler now.

    People really underestimate the value of a really nice studio desk. Not just one that looks good, but one that could potentially last as long as your music career does. If you dont cheap out, It's probably going to be one of the most expensive pieces of "gear" you have in your studio for a long time. Budget accordingly, there's not point in have a pair of distressors if you don't even have something to sit/stand in front of.

    You have got an awesome setup and some very clever solutions. I am just beginning to plan my music room. It will be mainly a guitar room with a control desk and a space for a keyboard. They idea is that it can serve as a practice room for me with my guitar rig and pedalboard, and for music learning (piano and guitar) for my daughter. I also like transcribing songs, so I need my computer and stuff. My challenge is that it is a dead square 10x20 ft. basement room with thick concrete walls and relatively low ceilings and two tiny windows. So I need to figure out which flow works best, then do some sort of sound proofing and sound treatment (insane small room reverb) and then work on the aesthetics (want it to be my music sanctuary). Any ideas on how to approach that? 😊

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  4 года назад +4

      Sounds fun! Yeah sure, make a list of the things you want from the room, another list of the problems. Then work out which problems need to be solved to achieve the list of goals! Have thought about doing similar with my home studio setup, although I’ve had problems with tracking drums and trying to hear the input signals well enough to get the mic positioning right at the source(with headphones on), when there’s so/too much acoustic noise (that’s overpowering the input signal levels in the headphones) from the drums behind me to get the best possible drum sound before commencing recording. How do you avoid problems like this or work around it? Any suggestions/advice is much appreciated, cheers man!

    • @AndrewMasters

      There’s a lot of testing. The more you do it the more you know what you like and what to expect. When I’m placing the mics, at this point, it’s like grabbing a G chord on a guitar. I know how it’s going to sound and what is appropriate for the sound I’m looking for. But nothing works better then get things placed record 8 bars, and then check it really quick. Through the speakers how you know and understand it.
