My car wouldn't start for some unknown reason. After checking all relays and fuses, I found a plastic tip near the clutch pedal. I realized that it engages the clutch position safety switch when you push in the clutch and was preventing my car from starting. I hope this helped you out.
Part # 74015
Dorman products
(just enter the part number in to google and find the dorman brand)
Thanks for this. Mine showed a steady Check Engine light. Using a jumper on the ODB1 was no help (no flashing). All the guidance said that means it's a bad ECU! I ruled out the started with a remote starter and it started right up. Found your video and it works exactly the same on my 1993 Civic Si. As I reached up inside the dash the "nipple" end of the bumper fell into my hand. Excellent, $4 part rather than a rebuilt ECU that would not have fixed the issue.
My friend, I can’t thank you enough. This fix saved my rear end. I changed the starter after Autozone stated it failed the test and swapped my battery. Nothing work except for your fix. You’re a gentleman and scholar sir!
Glad to hear that! This problem was annoying as heck to figure out what it was lol
I replaced the starter. Cussed. Watched your video. And as soon as you held up that little piece (the one I threw in the yard, because I didn’t know what the hell it was) I was relieved. A million thanks for the video 🙏
Lol I replaced the starter thinking the same thing 😂
@@sethbingo same on my turbo 94 coupe
Gentlemen and a scholar. I been having my buddies push start my civic for atleast 5 days( deep inside hating my life because i just got new tires and cant afford a starter atm). Then i decide to throw the dice and see what youtube had to say. Found this. Excellent my dude
I had to push start mine at one point too back when this was my problem. Good times 😂
I've been racking my brain for about 24 hours until I found this video I spent about 80 bucks buying the ignition switch the relays and nothing I just took off the floor mat and all the pieces of that damn little plastic piece on the ground thank you now I can go back and return everything I just bought
Seriously, it was such a bad design flaw. Damn engineers don't think about how hard it is to fix their cars sometimes lol.
Thanks for making this video, after watching, I went out to my civic and found that rubber piece on my floor mat. Saved me a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong. I would have replaced my starter for no reason! Thanks again!
No puedo creer que esta parte insignificante , el trabajo que hace, cambie el starter y nada , bueno al menos aprendi a cambiar un starter 😂😂😂 , excelente video y demostracion, gracias amigo por tu video me ahorraste tiempo y dinero.
Glad it helped out.
I cannot thank you enough I might’ve looked like an idiot in the gas station for 20 minutes but now I’m on the road. Thank you
Glad my video helped you out. I've been stuck in a similar situation like that before haha
Duuude!!! My Son's civic got stuck tonight, I checked every relay etc, and we were about to tow the civic until I watched your video.
So I want to thank You, I subscribed to your channel, God bless you my friend.
Glad it helped! Best of luck.
Dude. Same thing happened to me. Replaced the starter, noting happened. Stumbled across this video, and boom! Sure enough it was just laying on the floor of my car in 3 different pieces. God bless you.
Glad it helped.
After chasing my no crank/start problem all over…I saw this video. I paused at about 1:48 to look at/around my clutch…BINGO!!! Pieces of that plastic part on my floor right under clutch pedal. Now I finally have an anti theft system… no one would figure out holding that button while turning the key..🤣🤣🤣
Great job on the video man!! You saved the day…wish I saw it 2 1/2 days ago. lol. 🤙✌️ 👍👍
hahaha, glad it helped
OH WOWEE !!! Excellent thanks. My sons car civic SI was in parking lot at Autozone we going to do brakes. Went to start it no crank. Crap. I saw your viedo, the broken part was on the floor. Aha, so i pushed in the switch the button hits, with my finger, it started. ( so if you are stuck, not near a parts store, just push the little button in and start the car) Walked into Autozone in stock a pair of two styles of buttons. Drove home put it in Pow. Thank you.
Lucky for you I guess. It happened to me when I was giving someone a ride and I was so lost lol
Dude I want to thank you so much. This was the problem I had! You saved me a lot of time and money!
Awesome! Glad to hear it worked!
This just saved me a bunch of time and money. Thank you, good sir!
You're welcome!
Thank you for posting this, these plastic bolts are the bane of my existence
Yep, gotta love cheap plastic pieces breaking!
Almost didn’t make it to work today. Found those plastic pieces scattered on my floor. Appreciate the video a ton, thank you!!
Glad I could help!
This just happened to me today while I was in line at the drive-thru. I saw your video and realized it was the same thing, so I unplugged the switch from behind and made the switch with a cotter pin I happen to have in the door card pocket.
That must have sucked! Good thing you Jerry rigged it lol!
Thank you! We had the dead car problem yesterday and your video saved the day and some $$. It's a sod of thing to access and the white plastic plug/tip is a sod to ensure it pops through the hole at the top of the clutch lever so it stays in place. I used the wrench from the tire jacking kit and a hammer to bang it in to place.
awesome!
I was about to ask what that thing in his hand.
Thank you so much! We spent most of the day replacing the starter for it not to start and then I found this video and we had it running in 10 minutes! $140.00 on a starter later but thankfully we didn't have to spend more money!
Awesome! Glad that my video helped you out!
I don’t ever comment on RUclips. But this was exactly what my problem was. Thank you so much and you deserve a comment and thanks.
Glad I could help.
Thank you for your help. I had this problem for two weeks until I watched your video and I immediately went to see if it was the same problem and indeed I was able to start my vehicle without a problem, thank you very much friend

Glad it helped!
My brother... I had to sign in and leave my first RUclips comment; I've been diagnosing my car for 2 days before I found your video of this stupid issue. Thanks for curing my headache!
Glad my video could help!
2003 civic ex 5-speed..... had EXACT same thing today. Thank you.
you're welcome!
Found a bunch of videos on this problem and nobody got right to the first thing you should check, except yours. I wasted hours checking EVERYTHING else. Starter, battery, all wires leading to and from both, relays, ignition switch and inside fuse box before testing that particular switch. For a temporary fix we jumped the connector with a paper clip and it fired right up. Had to remove the clutch pedal assembly to actually replace the plastic part and the little broken off tip fell out. I had already replaced the plastic part for the other switch on the clutch (for the cruise control) and the one on my brake pedal (that let brake lights stay on all the time draining the battery) and saw that it is almost impossible to even see the plastic part on the upper switch. Anyway for anyone experiencing this exact problem check for the plastic part that operates the upper switch on the clutch pedal assembly. BTW I fixed it for 0 dollars which is the best part by just putting a nut and bolt in the hole.
dude it was the dumbest thing ever, poor design at it's finest
That was my same story. I cleaned my battery terminals so many times. It was a dumb plastic/rubber piece that broke.
Thank you so much, I seen broken plastic on the floor and didn't think much of it until it didn't start. Sure enough this was the problem. Thank you again
Glad it helped!
Lol. I found this piece of plastic on my floor mat. I have an automatic and the plastic was from the brake pedal. So my brake lights stayed on all night and killed my battery. Thanks for sharing.
Eduardo Aguilar did it work?
@@Gamer-db6xp I believe he did fix his problem, lol.
@@Gamer-db6xp Yes, i fixed it. However I didn't buy a new part. I just used a screw and a nut to replace the broken plastic piece. Sorry for the late reply.
Eduardo Aguilar cool thx for getting back to me .
I figured out i have the same situation going on thanks to your video! I replaced the broken plastic plug with a tile spacer and it started up again.
Thank you so much!
Awesome! It should hopefully last longer than the silly plastic piece.
Saved me bud appreciate the video. Got stuck at the store pulled the panels and low and behold that little rubber plug fell out. Saved me tons man thanks
Glad my video helped!
Thanx for this video, this literally is my exact problem. I just watched the video, went and tried it, car started right up... I was thinking it was the starter, not to mention this video made me check my floor and sure enough the broken pieces were there... I had the same thing happen on another car for the brake lights...
That sucks man! Freaking cars these days I swear! 😂
You saved my life bro !!! I thought my car was done i thought it was the starter , or the battery , but it wasnt thankfully i saw that little piece on the floor in my car so i was like boom this must be it and it was thank you my car is running now
glad my video helped.
Don’t worry man, you figured it out way quicker than I did, my 02 ES2 sat for a month and change because I completely overlooked that shit.. replaced the starter, ignition switch, and the crank position sensor.
That's sad to hear! Hope it gets running soon 😢
In addition to this part causing the clutch switch to not engage, the brake pedal has a similar part that will kill the battery when it crumbles / falls apart because it too needs to disengage a switch.
How do i find that
Interesting, I never knew that!
OHHHH MY GOD!! THANK YOU. YOU SERIOUSLY JUST SAVED MY LIFE…a new starter later, and thanks to you!!
glad it helped!
I just spent 2.5 hrs at my honda dealer today with this same problem. They told me it was my fuse box. I just spent 250 on that a month ago and put it in myself(long story) dealer wanted$540. ,anyway got home and found these plastic pieces in my floor board. replaced it and it fixed my problem. From experience JUst replace all of them on the clutch pedal and the brake pedal it will save you down the road. If the brake pedal thing breaks your brake lights will stay on and the other one will keep your cruise control from working.
Helpful tip! Glad this video helped.
So I went to the dealership to get both the button for the top and bottom switch since both had broken. They were ridiculously priced at $8 a piece, but on my 2003 Civic I was able to pop them both in without removing the assembly.
I fixed in 15 min bro Thanks. Used a flathead screwdriver taped it to flat side removed the front seat 2-3 min. Lay down stuck the tip and wedge it in. Double check it was laying flat car start right on.
Awesome, I'm glad my video helped!
Thank you soo much for saving me money and trying to diagnose the problem without actually knowing what was wrong after I watched your videos I went to check and sure enough that stupid little rubber was missing thank you my friend
You're welcome! Glad my video helped
Glad you made this video. Got my car towed home and the starter has been acting fine but I couldn’t start it out of the blue I’ll check on that first thing in the morning
glad I could help!
I had this same issue...was about to replace starter and this was actually what was happening--thx cousin
Only difference was my abs light wasn't on when key was on....thx again for sharing
@@jasonfredericks8956glad it helped
My Civic 2004 has the same issued. Thank you.
Glad my video helped.
You literally saved me like 500 dollars
hell yeah man!
I spent that $500 before I saw this. Hopefully this works.
Thanks for that man! First time happening to me today on my 03 civic. I used gorilla glue and a penny. Starts right up!! First fix under $5 😂
Could you tell me what he’s pointing at lol
@@frzgzvalorant197plastic piece, the part number is in the description as well
Glad I found this vid before replacing a starter!
Hopefully it helped you out!
Thank You!!! You saved me so much time, money and frustration with this video!!!
Glad I could help! I was frustrated myself with this problem!
This Video just save me alot of time money, Thank You Very Much!
All I got to say is you the man of the year
Glad it helped out.
Thank you. Your video just saved a friend a lot of time and frustration.
You're welcome 🙂
dude, thanks man. you saved me a bunch of time and head hurting
Glad to hear!
You'rs is the BEST video about that Fn issue part (all the others on here take forever on that)....before I go Beat the Hell of out my 20yr mechanic and the new mechanic whom put in a new Battery and new Starter --Im gonna try turning on my my 1989 Honda CRX SI (original owner) wheels with my Back-up Key first, then focus on your point. If all else fails 'beat the crap outta' of the Alarm guys whom put my alarm in ---cause the start my car issue not existant then.
best of luck!
Man my 02 civic si had the same problem , bro you saved me 150$ on a starter thank you so much!!!!
Awesome! I unfortunately had replaced mine before I did this fix!
@@sethbingo I'm sorry that happened, I'm very appreciative of the informative video tho
bro i been at this shit for almost 2 weeks pulling shit testing and replacing it and i get up under the dash to look at my clutch and boom no rubber piece this video is truly a god send even if it isnt the issue i would have never checked for that piece all the part stores are closed rn but first thing im going to get some of those clutch pins and if that works im going to punch some air
Lol! that sucks best of luck
This might be it! I'll have to check for that when my FIL comes to help me try to diagnose it tomorrow.
Thankfully I'm in a 2 car household, so my car not starting is ONLY mildly inconvenient.
Haha, it's always nice to have a backup!
You too Seth... thanks for responding
You're welcome!
Thank you so much I did exactly what you did. It was the same piece of plastic. Your was very helpful.
You're welcome! Stupid right??? lol
I replaced the starter and it still would’ve start so this video helped a lot 😭
Great!
You saved me from paying 400$! Thanks bro!
Glad I could help!
THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS ALMOST STRANDED. GOD BLESS.
You're welcome!
You're the REAL MVP🤾♂️🏌️♂️🏆🥇⭐ thank you much!
You're welcome!
Wow bro! Thanks soooo much for this. Exactly what I had. I did the same thing already replaced the starter too sadly but at least it's fixed now
Yep I did the same. At least you can rest assured that your starter won't die on you anytime soon!
Thanks just had the same problem in my lx so duct taped the switch down and tucked it out the way starts just fine now thanks again
Awesome, glad my video helped!
My god you’ve saved me
I LOVE YOU! I have a 2001 Honda Civic and this worked! Mine was not broken off, but I tried it anyways and it worked! Thanks man!
You're welcome dude!
Also be sure to move the floor mat if it’s in the way, otherwise the clutch pedal won’t go down far enough to engage the safety switch .
Fair point, that's also important!
It works!!!! You are genius bro!!! God bless you 💪😎
Glad my video helped.
Thank you so much! This saved me a lot of time and money.
Glad it helped. Nothing beats saving money!
Broooooo thank youuuu!!! It just happend to me I'm thankful I found your video
Glad I could help!
This vid just saved me a HEADACHE!!!!
awesome! glad I could help!
As a way to solve the clutch safety switch problem demonstrated here without removing the clutch to access the hole for the stop pad or bumper, you could refer to the following link (video and description).

Awesome! Thanks for the extra support!
Thanks Bro. My car been down for months 😂
I feel that. My SVX tranny died almost two months ago. Just now got around to ripping it out.
Outstanding Sir!! Thanks So Much!! I will share your video!! Please keep up the Good Work!!!
Glad it helped out! I miss my little civic :*(
Great video buddy I just had this problem today, good video, it’s help a lot, thank you for sharing knowledge
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
Bro you are my hero this morning! Thank you so much!
Glad my video helped!
Ok, so how do you fix it? This just happened to me. The car's been starting fine and the dash was lit up so I knew it wasn't the battery and highly doubted it was the starter. So showing the fix would be good, but this was still a big help.
This only apply to 5 speed. You would have to remove the whole clutch unit assy out.
Reply with your email address here is you need more help.
@@angelisone I got both switches for the clutch at the Honda dealer and was able to snap them in without taking the clutch unit out. Cost me $17 for both. I had a feeling the way it was behaving it was something like this, but didn't know exactly what so this got me quickly pointed in the right direction. Thanks.
@@michaelsanders9147 Those two push button switches are not cheap. I think you are referring 2 rubber tabs.
In the future, if you can't start the engine: Disconnect the Top Switch Plug & paper clip short/jump the plug.
@@angelisone Yeah, I misspoke. I replaced the pieces that actually broke, not the whole switch. I did use the paperclip. That's how I got it to start to get to the dealer.
Thanks for the video! I had the same problem!
Glad it helped you out!
This is the exact same material for the switch for the back brake light. I replaced mine with a penny. Gonna do the same for this
That's hilarious, I replaced mine with a bolt and nut actually LOL
2000 Honda Civic EX (5 speed). Those 2 taps are brand new, Two switched tested good. Can crank but won't turn over.
Anyone knows the problems or fixes?
Notes:
1. Battery is brand new
2. Starter/Complete Engine overhauled with new Spark Plugs/Cable, Timing Belt Kit/Belts
3. Daughter says it ran fine all day & in the morning it has power. And can crank the starter/flywheel, but won't start (running)
Thank you for posting this video. It was exactly my prob.🥰🥰
You're welcome!
Respects Sir, u are a hero😤
thanks!
Thank you bro your a life saver
Happy to help
Man thank you so much. Youre a genius. You saved my sanity lol
What’s the plastic piece called?
@@musicindustrydrama838 im not sure man. Id say clutch kill switch nipple? Im going to fit a short bolt and backing nut to mine so it doesnt break again. Mine just disintegrated.
"Clutch pedal stopper button pad" is the official name
@@tysteven6279 thanks bro I’ll found it out
my 04 civic manual having start issues for 2yrs! replaced the starter, spark plugs and fuel filter. Hopefully this will help me soon as this snow ends

Did it fix it?
Thank you so much! I was just about to go buy a starter! Thank you
Yeah I found this out after I bought a new starter 😂
How do I replace this ?thank you so much your video helped
I believe you have to pop it out. Glad I could help!
My hero
Thanks!
Your a life saver man
Glad that my video helped!
unbeknownst...legend
What is it called I found one in my civic but it’s an automatic so idk where to put it
Muchas gracias me ayudaste mucho
No problem! Glad my video helped. tomo algo de español en la escuela lol
What if my car i automatic?? Does it have the same piece on the break ?
Not sure to be honest 😅
Omg so helpful thank you!!
Happy to help!
Bro same issue but I have automatic 2003 civic there is no clutch pedel
Mine is doing the same thing but it’s an automatic, what could it be?
Hard to know. I always check the battery first, followed by the air filter, and so on. Spark, Fuel, and Air create combustion. If something is wrong with one of them the car will not start.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks so much
You're welcome!
you are so awesome man thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Thanks man
You're welcome!
It saved me before buying things but how do we get that plastic piece or so back on? What part is it the hole safety switch
It's attached to the clutch pedal. Make sure to replace it with a new plastic one or a you can use a bolt and nut instead.
Good Looking out Bro. I just ran into the same problem and you saved me a ton of money.
Glad to hear!
So that little piece of plastic that looks like it broke off the peddle is supposed to push a switch or activate something? Kinda wild. You still driving this civic?
Yeah it pushes the clutch position safety switch. I don't have this civic anymore unfortunately :(
I have the same problem but my Honda civic is automatic, but is does the thing, i check my started but is fine
I'm not sure, check your battery, starter, and fuel. You need spark, air, and fuel to start a car
