Excellent interview, despite the interviewer. Professor Heather was interesting and engaging, as usual.

We already _are_ falling like Rome which enabled the collapse.
Rome fell over a several hundred years period, and our cultural "self-deletion" is perfectly analogous to the import and development of other cultures into Rome.
It's only under a perfect blend of circumstances, geography, and culture that a society thrives, and with Rome, their pagan religion was part of the fabric. As soon as Christianity took hold, it played a huge part in undermining everything.
Today, we are seeing the same thing. In the United States, Christianity was part of the fabric that made us successful, and with it being replaced with new religions (especially atheism, but other, more old world religions as well), the stability is being undermined in the same way.
To sum this up, a society literally _is_ it's culture. Break down that culture, and you break down the society. What's troubling is because of the perfect "storm" of circumstances for a society to thrive, the replacement culture will not simply thrive in its own way.....not until a period of war has passed and amid the chaos, eventually a stable set of circumstances once again emerges within the new culture.

I respectfully disagree with your idea that a shift in religion or culture brought about the fall of Rome. The main factors in my opinion were an over extension of empire and a rotting ( for lack of a better term ) of their political system. Both of those causes are also seen in the " west " today and in America in particular.

I agree. That's about the best comparison of now & then(Ancient Rome.)Culture breakdown, that's certainly happening in western democratic countries.Massive immigration of people who want to do just that (Jihad.) Left ideology etc.I s'pose they had their "wokes"back then too,who pushed some statues over.Or is this particular madness confined to modern times & climate activists.

@@robertturner540You have negatively addressed the previous comment. But have failed to explain your reason.Immigration ! The soldiers, the slaves, the conquered people came to Rome & changed it's culture. That's what is happening right now in West.Demo.countries.O.k. politicians have allowed it. But somehow we know that it had to happen. Maybe, because of colonisation & wars that should not have happened.

In some alternate universe the Roman Empire figured out that it is very dangerous for the Empire as an entity to have multiple rulers at the same time in it's different regions, so they went back to one Emperor only, eventually developing into a democracy, landing on the moon in 743 AD haha. In 2023 AD the nearby solar systems were colonized and named after medieval Roman scientists :)

I’ve read both The Fall and The Restoration. Loved both but second especially original in its angles.

Sorry, but telling history from a "woke" perspective has nothing to do with objectivity or being particularly astute. Thank you for the engaging conversation

It strikes me that empires do not fall because of a decadent elite. They fall when the bourgeoisie think they can aspire to decadence

Such a strange question. How can an Empire, any Empire, fall, from such a low place that most of it’s people live in misery? Why don’t we breathe a huge sigh as we all did when the Soviet Union fell?

So you actually think it is an empire?
