Hi I am practicing also horagai, according to Kinpusen-ji school. But I am also interested in learning how horagai are played at other shugen-schools. I like the horagai sound of haguro-shugen. It sounds as these sounds are absorbed into the mountains.😊
Hi, thanks for your message and good luck, anything specific I can help you with? My main tip is to keep your lips as tight as possible and force the air out. The Kinpusen-ji Horagai have a different mouthpiece to ours (Dewa Sanzan jinja) which means you can actually get more sounds out, 5 if I’m not mistaken. We can force out a fourth sound, I recently discovered.
@@kiwiyamabushi Hi, thanks for replying. This is my teacher. Here, he plays typical Kinpu-senji notes. Very different than Haguro-style. ruclips.net/video/tiIad29fe_Y/видео.htmlsi=Vc7M33-xDK7t9u0M
Hello, Thank you for this video and brief explanation and tutorial. Are you able to give any information as to where the mouth pieces for the Horagai can be purchased please? Thank you again 🙏
Thanks, unfortunately, I'm not sure where to get the mouthpieces from. The only way I would know would be to visit the store I visit in my other video (the one about how much a Horgai costs). Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
@@kiwiyamabushi Yes! Thanks you! Is it OK to puff out your cheeks when blowing? I’ve noticed a lot of videos don’t seem to show this . But I definitely get a better sound, especially the low tone if I puff them out. More questions to follow if you don’t mind, thanks again!
@@yamabiru4553 Hey, I had a look at your video, I think your Horagai is from Kumano or Omine? That means it's different to mine. But the way we play should at least be similar. From what I hear, the Omine type has a reed which means it should be easier to play different notes. I could be wrong though, would love to know more if I could. For the cheeks, yes, puff them out. They are used for storing extra air. I've actually learned a few more things about the Horagai since I made this video, like letting it echo more, and also practicing lip positions so that you get a constant sound, but I'm still working on both of these points.
@@kiwiyamabushi thanks for looking at my video Tim! Was just messing around, but that’s about my level haha. I got mine used but I think it is from this maker www.mercari.com/jp/items/m82932045432/ Don’t think it has a reed in it at all but it’s possible. I will make another video in the coming week showing it and playing what I can , please take a look in a few days, thanks for your time, greatly appreciated!
Amazing explanation!
I really like to listen to Horagai!
Your talk is always interesting , thank you so much Tim!
Thanks Reiko! I think I've gotten better at it since I filmed this :)

The Kinpusen-Ji horagai also get a lower tone I think.

@@kiwiyamabushi many thanks for your reply.
Very very helpful! I recently started playing one and this is a great tutorial.
Hey thanks! I’m glad you thought so! Is there anything else I could teach you about the conch?

Hey yeah it doesn’t seem to have one! That’s really cheap by the way! Some I’ve seen here for 15万, I wonder what the difference is.
Thank you...
You're welcome!
Enjoyed your utube. Where can I buy the mouth piece used in your shell trumpet. Is it available on the internet
Thank you for your support! I don’t actually know I’m afraid. The place I know is not on the internet :(
Kita ada punya pak....
Mantap
Thank you!
Is the shell originally from the sea?
Yes! Probably someplace like the Philippines, but I’m not entirely sure. We recently got some new ones from Amami Oshima south of Kyushu though.
In my country there are lots of them...
Oh really? I bet a lot of people can play them then!
We can't blow it, but we want to sell it
